Learn isiZulu with Explore isiZulu
The isiZulu courses are aimed at adults where each person can learn at their own pace in intensive sessions guided by a qualified teacher.
Beginners and intermediate courses are available. The courses start in February, May, July and October. The courses run over an eight week period, two nights a week. The lessons take place in Hilton. Morning, afternoon and evening sessions are available.
Courses for individuals and business groups can be arranged.
Who is the lecturer?
I am a qualified second language teacher who has taught isiZulu privately for fifteen years. IsiZulu was a matric subject and a major subject for my BA degree. I am passionate about the language. Recently, I have been researching the history of the written grammar.
What level of lessons are available?
I have both beginner and intermediate lessons on offer.
What are the objectives of the beginner’s course?
At the end of the course, you will have a firm grasp of the basic grammar and will be able to use the vocabulary in meaningful ways. You will be able to ask and answer questions correctly and you will be able to read simple books.
At whom is the beginner’s course aimed?
The interactive course is aimed at adults with little or no prior learning of the language. Some individuals may have latent knowledge because they have lived in KwaZulu Natal.
What does the beginner’s course cover?
The course covers basic grammar and vocabulary providing you with the necessary insight into the workings of the language. It will focus on learning to ask and to answer questions in many different situations.
Is it a conversational course?
The course encourages learners to speak, write and read their own sentences based on an understanding of first level grammar and relevant vocabulary.
How intense are the lessons?
The lessons are of medium level of intensity.
May I continue with lessons?
Yes, the first course may be followed by additional courses that introduce more complex grammar and additional vocabulary.
Greater competency will be attained in subsequent courses as you learn more of the language.
How long is the course?
The course is 8 weeks in duration with 5 hours per week, broken into 2,5 hour sessions twice a week. The course takes place on a Monday and Wednesday or on a Tuesday and Thursday or on Saturday (the full 5 hours). Each course comprises 40 hours of expert tuition.
The courses take place in either the morning, the afternoon, or in the evening, depending on the interest.
What are the dates of the course?
Normally, the courses take places four times a year, in February, May, July and October.
What is the class size?
The minimum number is six with the maximum of twelve. The small class size is aimed at optimising the interactions between the lecturer and the learners.
Where are the lessons held?
In the Hilton area.
What about individual lessons or in-company courses?
Those individuals requiring one-on-one lessons or tutor services and those interested to host in-company courses are invited to contact the lecturer for further discussion about your precise needs.
