"Coaching is about helping clients unlock the treasure-chest of their lives - worth bearing in mind then that diamonds are made from coal under pressure and it's the grit in the oyster which creates the pearls." This quote by Sarah Durant speaks to the fact that sometimes we need the pressure in order to produce the beautiful result.
Right now we are really needed in the world because we are facing many pressures and uncertainties- from Covid- loss of jobs, changes in the way we work, loss of family and friends from Covid without a "proper" funeral for them, isolation, loss of opportunities because so many things were shut down. For the youngsters at school, there were no matric dances, no sport, no chance at representing your province at sport, difficulty socialising... and the list goes on and on. In South Africa, and particularly the province I live in, we have the challenges of unexpected power outages, load shedding, riots, floods and the increase in crime due to the bad economic climate. At work things have changes so dramatically- we now can work from home- but is that a privilege or not? What does it do to relationships at the office?
I could go on and on, but I think you are all very familiar with the scenario. People - all people - are living with stress and uncertainty. Since Covid there has been a 25% increase in depression and anxiety. People out there are battling... and this is where we come in. We can help support them through their difficulties, enable them with tools that will assist their ability to weather this uncertainty. In other words, we can help them become more resilient. We are not a luxury anymore-we are a necessity!
How can YOU help? What can YOU do to make it easier for many, or maybe just one person? A colleague of mine in Belgium is coaching all Ukranian women refugees pro-bono- how generous is that? Let's use her example to reach out and provide our help so desperately needed.
