Preparing your firewood for the cold season
While we are enjoying this stunning hot spell it is difficult to imagine being so cold that you need to light a fire! But in a few short months that is exactly what we will be doing.
In order to get the most out of your fireplace have a look at our recommendations below:
• Moisture content: The moisture content of your wood makes a considerable difference to the effectiveness of your fire. Ideally the wood you burn should be between 15 - 18%.
• Season & store: To get to a low moisture content ensure your wood is seasoned and then stored correctly.
• Select carefully: Opt for a hardwood and preferably an alien species such as Black Wattle.
How to season firewood:
• Ideally you would cut or buy well before you plan to burn it. 10 - 18 months is ideal.
• Cut the unseasoned wood into usable lengths based on the size of your firebox/ stove/ fireplace - usually 300mm-400mm.
• Split logs into a variety of widths – 80mm – 140mm
• Stack your firewood for the drying/seasoning process to begin. Ideally you should stack your firewood 1 log length deep against an outbuilding wall up to a metre high. Do not cover it.
• Once your wood is seasoned a well ventilated indoor covered space can make a convenient and attractive storage space. In our homes we keep a good supply close to our fireplaces to further help reduce moisture content.
