7pm - Sphiwe Hadebe Official
R&B Singer, songwriter, actor and presenter Sphiwe Hadebe was born in 1992 in Ladysmith, KZN. The talented Sphiwe has an extensive vocal range. He writes his own lyrics and composes music for both himself and other artists. He covers global artists like Sam Smith, Chris Brown, Trey Songs, Usher, Whitney Houston and local artists such as Ntando and Soul Brothers. In 2010 he moved to Durban to pursue his musical dreams, joined SAGA Records and joined a hip hop group called Durban Cadenza as the vocalist among rappers. In 2012, Sphiwe made it through to the 3rd round of SA's Got Talent and got to be on TV for the first time. In 2013 Sphiwe made it to finals of a local battle Competition "REP YOUR LOXION" as the only singer going head to head against rappers. Sphiwe Hadebe got his first mainstream shot via a collaboration with Rapper Lacosteration on a song titled "Brand New Me" which was playlisted nationwide, and saw him build up his fan base among hip hop heads. He then collaborated with Lacosteration in his LP titled "As I Enter," which featured him on the upcoming single "Mntanomuntu" produced by Blacksun. He is currently working on his debut Album to be titled "Lomculo" and will soon be releasing his first EP in the form of a live DVD titled "A New Perspective."
7:30pm Ruby Gill
FIRST GIG ON NEW ALBUM TOUR, FAREWELL TO SA
Ruby was popped into a car at age 4 and left at a red gate which turned out to be a piano lesson. That red gate led to 15 years of classical training, and an early discovery of a voice, some things to say, and a songwriting style shaped by the birds and constellations around her. By age 14 there were enough songs about windmills and windows to make a little demo album in a garage in Pietermaritzburg, so she did. Then another in between logarithms, and then an unfolding career at major festivals across South Africa, and collaborations with international and local producers and musicians, and songwriting pursuits for other young artists at Sony Music Africa.
This year saw the beginning of Ruby's studio releases, with a powerful debut of "Winter" - an exploratory, silvery single that launched a new season in Ruby's musical development. "Fault / Missing in Japan" followed in August, and is the first double-sided single release of her upcoming debut studio album. The dark, angst-ridden energy of "Fault" is echoed in the skeletal answer of "Missing in Japan". This single is the first of what is to be a heart-tearing, foot-tapping, epiphany-inducing debut double-sided album from the quirky songbird. Following the trails carved by the world of Joni Mitchell, Regina Spektor, Missy Higgins and Florence Welch, Ruby Gill's honest and beautifully-woven lyricism, harmonies and effortless multi-instrumental expertise will be the soundtrack to this generation's attempt at adult-ing, with all the lightness, and heaviness, of human folly.
Ruby's new album will be on sale. She also moves abroad next month - and we're glad she's coming to MiTH before she does. Visit www.rubygillmusic.com.
8pm Quark with Fiona Tozer
Quark is a musical collaboration between bassist Dan Wilson and singer-guitarist Fiona Tozer. Fusing elements of their diverse musical experiences, they have created a collection of songs in a style that could be described as contemporary folk-fusion. The music features acoustic guitar, bass and voice, and incorporates loops. Quark's theme album, currently being recorded in Durban and due for release early next year, is about space-time and the universe, and the lyrics explore the place of the human race in the cosmos.
Fiona Tozer is a songwriter and guitarist, who has played at many venues and festivals around the country and was the headline act at Splashy Fen in 2004. Her music has evolved over time - after recording three CDs of original songs in folk and acoustic rock style, she studied music at university, getting a masters degree in contemporary classical composition.
Dan Wilson has played with musicians as diverse as steel guitar legend Mike Cooper, the Waterboys, Annette Peacock, Syd Kitchen and RISE. He has released five albums with Creeper, an acid jazz outfit featuring saxophonist Luke Townsend, and has performed on several albums by local and international musicians. Dan’s album ‘Max Roach Park’ with UK drummer Mark Huggett was nominated for a SAMA for best jazz album in 2006.
