DON’T MiTH THE MICHAELHOUSE MUSIC FESTIVAL

 

The tent will feature a continuous flow of live music – from open mic artists, novices and soloists to professionals and bigger rock bands - at no charge. It will also provide a spot for patrons of the festival to relax and listen to live music while enjoying a refreshment between other shows. Tickets for paid shows at the festival can be purchased at Ticket Hut. Entrance to the school, and to the MiTH tent, is free. The MiTH tent line-up is as follows:

 

Saturday April 29th
• 10h00 Nishalin Pillay and Jesse Martins – a local acoustic/percussion duo featuring a mix of original and cover material.

 

• 11h00 Bianca Santoro – still in her tender teens, local talent Bianca Santoro has made a name for herself as a Midlands singer-songrwriter.

 

• 12h00 Mbijana Sibisi – Durban-based singer-songwriter Mbijana Sibisi has a haunting vocal ad delivers a treasure trove of fresh material while throwing in the odd Johnny Clegg cover.

 

• 13h00 Bowstring – this daughter-father (Charles and Rebecca Webster) duo has become known for vocal harmonies and a funky rhythm section – mix of cover and original.

 

• 14h00 Whipland Marsh – Durban-based rockers with striking vocals and plenty of attitude.

 

• 15h00 Kodiak – Pietermaritzburg-based pop-rock band lead by Dave Rossouw, whose soaring vocals deliver impressive originals and covers with finesse!

 

• 16h00 Antonio Ravell Band – lead by the man of the same name, this band is well-known all over KZN for its skilful delivery of rock songs and artful ballads.

 

• 17h00 Serrotone - Pete Guthrie, vocalist and a prolific songwriter with Spoonfeedas for 12 years has teamed up with James Robertson and close friend, superb drummer Billy Kruger. Robertson who sang and wrote material for Spoonfeedas in 2001, also went on to form Cubic Inch. Between Guthrie and Robertson they have been part of writing and performing more than 10 charting singles (including 2 no 1 singles and a handful of top 10's) on South African radio. With Spoonfeedas Guthrie has opened for artists like Muse, Velvet Revolver, Simple Plan and Metallica. He has also performed the National anthem in Christchurch NZ before a Trinations rugby test. James has opened for Bryan Adams on his SA tour with his band Cubic Inch while Billy has played with a variety of established artists at some impressive events like the Youth Day concert in Amsterdam with group MIC where they performed after Delirious at Ajax Football Stadium in front of 140 000 people. A recently added feature is the inclusion of Nick Ames who is possibly one of the finest trumpet players in South Africa. Don’t miss them.

 

• 18h00 Rusty Red Escapade - Led by Midlands guitar (and now, vocal) legend, Rusty Red (aka Luke Wyngaard) and backed by Skippy Kubheka on bass and Baviaan (Chris Melling) on drums, Rusty Red Escapade brings a gutsy blues-rock sound to the stage. The band will be performing original material from a new EP and might throw in a few covers. If you're a fan of blues, rock, and the likes of Stevie-Ray Vaughn, these chaps will please your ear greatly!

• 12h00 Matt Gardiner - Matt is a young musician born and bred in Pietermaritzburg, and performs Indie Folk with a slight Rock undertone, with influences including Mumford and Sons, Matthew Mole and John Mayer.

 

• 13h00 Cheryl Engel - Cheryl Engel is a singer/songwriter. She started singing and performing from the age of 9 and spent several years singing in studio as a session singer. Cheryl draws on her life experiences to craft poetry that forms the lyrical basis of her heartfelt and memorable songs, her style of music can be described as folk/rock with hints of country. Her style has been compared with that of Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlile, Civil Wars, Cranberries and Taylor Swift.

 

• 14h00 Summer du Preez - Summer du Preez is a musician based in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. She started her musical journey at MiTH, among a few other places, and it’s wonderful to welcome her back. She and her guitar capture the audience with her folk indie approach.

 

• 15h00 Pillarbox Red - Pillarbox Red is a four man band that came together to study subject music at Michaelhouse, and then discovered that when performing together, they created a unique sound that they really enjoyed. Debuting in the relatively small community that is Michaelhouse, they found that they loved performing and soon were given the opportunities to share their sound with more people. The band does covers of modern pop songs with their own little twist.

 

They draw their name from the official Michaelhouse school colour, which they decided sounds quite cool.
