Jessica Bompas, a Grade 10 pupil at St Anne’s Diocesan College, is currently ranked 20th in the world for the 200m distance, in the U18 age group category. Jessica competed during the April school holidays and won the 200m U17 race and set the fastest time for the season in KZN out of all athletes including seniors. She ran 24.02, narrowly missing the SA record of 24.00 seconds. She also came 3rd in the 100m U17 race. In Cape Town she ran in the U18 division and was beaten by 2 older girls to come 3rd in the 200m and 3rd again in the 100m. She was visited at school by Busi Thwala (Department of Sports and Recreation) and Nobuhle Moyana (Department of Education) who presented her with a trophy and certificate from SASA (South African Schools Athletics) in recognition of her achievements. Jessica has been considered for the National Team to represent South Africa at the African Youth Games and World Youth Games which will be held in Bata and Kenya during June 2017.
