7:45pm Tantu Nada (Dave Starke and Nish Pillay)
Dave Starke is a South African singer-songwriter who strives to capture human moments in musical form - to sum up, a whole host of thoughts and emotions using just his voice and a guitar. He describes a guitar as “nothing more than a wooden box with strings, tensioned to near breaking point – it’s fundamental, honest and often scary and it’s a good metaphor for the human experience…”
Inspired by the creators and captures that came before him that poured themselves into paper, canvas, vinyl and clay, Dave uses enough words to get you thinking, but no so many that he tells you what to think. He sees songwriting as something of a survival strategy – a pressure release valve that keeps him together.
His music is lyric-driven, performed on guitar with occasional touches of percussion and some very haunting whistling. For Dave, it’s all about telling stories, so the voice is the most important instrument and everything else is there to be a support structure for the narrative. He has released two albums - Duende (2018) and Shifting Boundaries (2020).
Nish is a nomadic percussionist, born in Pietermaritzburg, he plays the Tabla, Cajon and several other drums from around the world and has performed live with several South African and international musicians in the last few years.
A highlight was being the opening act for American singer/songwriter and Grammy award winner Ben Harper at the Grand West Cape Town with the Jack Mantis Band. He has also performed with South African legends like Steve Fataar, Larry Amos and Tim Parr and Robin Auld Nish is considered one of the most versatile percussionists in the country and his stage presence has been described by the media as 'legendary'.
"Making beats is my passion; my goal is to unite people through music and positively affect everyone I encounter “. Nish has also recently received Indian classical music lessons in Bangalore, India, taking his Tabla playing to new heights.
Dave recently recorded soul-stirring albums entitled ‘Shifting Boundaries’ and ‘Duende’ (available on all music platforms), the album features Nish and the duo have performed songs from this album throughout South Africa on national tours. The duo has also performed at the National Arts Festival 2019 in Grahamstown and regularly perform original shows throughout KZN and Cape Town. Together, Nish and Dave create a unique sound that is influenced by jazz, flamenco, bossa nova and Indian classical music and their performance is delivered in a hauntingly intimate and emotional manner.
