Occupational Therapy is not just occupational therapy – it reaches into the areas of work, education, mental health, physical rehabilitation and uses a practical approach to promote optimal functioning in work, personal/interpersonal and leisure applications. With this comes a holistic approach for treatment.
Amanda Kuhn matriculated from Pietermaritzburg Girl’s High School after which she studied Occupational Therapy and graduated with a BSc. OT (hons.) in 1990. During her years of undergraduate study, she spent most vacations working as a temp in a variety of corporate settings which has benefitted her in working with people across the board.
Due to Amanda’s curious nature and keenness to learn more, she has accumulated diverse work experience. She began her career in a Protective Workshop setting before entering the field of education treating children with Cerebral Palsy, learning difficulties and developmental delays in both the school setting and private practice.
Amanda then spent two years working in California in a hospital-based physical rehabilitation clinic treating both in and outpatients. On her return to South Africa, she resumed working as an Educational Therapist in the school setting, office based as an Education Specialist and private practice, before moving into the field of Psychiatry. For the past six and half years she has been treating individual, and groups of patients with a wide range of mental health issues in an acute in-patient hospital.
Her overall experience has allowed Amanda to gain insight into a broad spectrum of people and life and her artistic talent and creativity have been an excellent tool for providing intervention.
Amanda’s post graduate studies have included Sensory Integration training, qualification in Neurodevelopmental Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy training, accreditation as a Psychoneuroimmunology facilitator and Addiction Counselling. She is registered with the HPCSA as well as the Board of Addiction Professionals in South Africa.
From mid-March 2022, Amanda will be opening her private practice in Hilton, providing intervention for people experiencing depression, anxiety, stress and substance use disorders.
