La Popote Café in Hilton, KZN Midlands is situated in an old barn along Knoll Drive, 3km west of Hilton's landmark Crossways intersection. The owner, Lesley Strachan has been creating delicious meals at La Popote since early in 2000 when she opened at Sue Tarr's Summerhouse. The restaurant more recently relocated to The Knoll Historic Guest House's barn, just beyong Hilton's famous fuchsia and daylily nursery.Tables on the lawn outside offer a gentle country outlook and there is a marked and maintained 5km walk on the property if you prefer to earn your meals through a little exertion.
Lesley makes divine and homely food, and serves generous portions. Plan to go three or four times so that you can enjoy a breakfast, brunch, lunch AND tea. The baked goods and treat options are delectable, but the average appetite will probably not stretch to a sweet and a meal all at one sitting, and everybody deserves to indulge in Lesley's carrot cake or scones with jam and cream. Unless you dine with someone you truly trust to share a slice of chocolate cake fairly, you simply must eat and repeat to savour this menu.
