Love Hilton has already identified key areas where we can make meaningful changes, but we’re looking for more ideas from YOU so that we can represent the community…
Love Hilton Needs YOU!
What drives your excitement, or motivates you to get out of bed in the morning?
Maybe it’s that first cup of coffee, or the need to get your kid to school. Perhaps it’s the photo on your fridge, the reason why you signed up for BootCamp with Chad. Maybe it’s a career goal, or saving up for a holiday?
According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, there are five universal human needs. These needs explain our behaviour and interrogate our motivations. Ultimately the hierarchy looks at where we apply the most effort and focus, and asks what makes us tick.
If we start with the fundamentals, we all have the same basic needs. Although we like to believe otherwise, we’re not as different as we think when it comes to basic survival. At our most basic level, our core needs are physiological. We all need water, food, clean air, and shelter.
But who wants to just survive?
We want to thrive.
This is where Love HIlton comes in. Part of the reason we want to establish Hilton into an Urban Improvement Precinct is so that we can create sustainable and meaningful contributions to our town. We want to build on the existing initiatives that have an impact beyond what we need to just “make do”.
There are four other needs that Maslow identifies, namely “safety and security,” “social,” “esteem,” and “self actualisation”.
Feeling safe and secure comes down to more than just home security. It’s a sense of having emotional stability, freedom, law and order. Our social needs are the reason we have friends and family, and why we feel warm and fuzzy when we watch puppy videos on YouTube (guilty as charged). The needs around esteem focus on our sense of self. This need is tied to our sense of achievement, reputation, independence, and how we evaluate ourselves. Perhaps this is why we watched all those tutorials during lockdown, and found the need to make our own sourdough starters.
Finally, our needs around self-actualisation are about growth, unity, understanding, beauty, morality, exploration and play. We often put these needs last because we’re too busy filling out tax returns, trying to remember online banking passwords, and adulting.
Love Hilton wants to fulfil the community’s needs so that Hilton is home to everyone, and a place to grow, play, and celebrate what we have.
Love Hilton has identified five areas of focus:
Safety and Security
General Cleanliness and Tidiness
Maintenance and Development of Public Spaces
The Natural Environment and Green Issues
Attending to Social Issues
Within these areas of focus we’d like to hear what needs you’d like us to meet. What do your children want? How do you want public space to look? Do you have particular dreams for Hilton?
In short, we want your ideas, because home is more than the house you live in. This space is all of ours, and there’s so much potential.
