The first pop-up gallery in the KZN Midlands opened its doors in the Rotunda, the iconic centre at the Cedara on-ramp onto the N3. Established jointly by artists Kathy Jacob and Simon Addy, the Studio Gallery aims to give artists more exposure. Students at Jacob’s studio will also benefit from the exposure.“We’re off the beaten track and may not draw the crowds, but the idea is to give it a go, and see where it goes,” said Jacob.
No stranger to taking the plunge and breaking new ground, Jacobs also founded the inaugural Art in the Country selling exhibition at Harrington House in Hilton earlier this year.
“They’re very different entities, but we’re hoping to stimulate and encourage the latent artistic talent in Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands,” she said.
The initiative struck a chord with several works being snapped at the official opening of the Studio Gallery last week (Nov 1).
“I’m excited by the early-stage interest, and we’ll promote it heavily among artists and on social media,” said Jacob.
