With cholera cases on the rise in South Africa, people are urged not to drink water from unsafe sources. Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium ???????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????. Symptoms include acute watery diarrhoea, severe dehydration, nausea and vomiting. While cholera can be fatal if left untreated, it can easily be treated with an oral rehydration solution. If you have diarrhoea, especially severe diarrhoea, seek treatment right away. Severe dehydration is a medical emergency that requires immediate care. You can also protect yourself in the following ways:
???? Wash your hands with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before handling food.
???? Drink only safe water, such as bottled or previously boiled water.
???? Don’t add ice to drinks, unless you’ve made the ice yourself using safe water.
???? Eat food that’s completely cooked.
???? Stick to fruits and vegetables that you can peel yourself.
