"Our Meet ‘n Make volunteers have been assisting us with making learning materials from recycling for the past 9 years. We need approximately 300 to 400 of each item for every week’s lesson plan which is very time consuming, so our volunteers join us for a cup of tea and offer their helping hands to share the load. It started with one group of ladies who come to our offices on a Tuesday morning. We have around 15 regular volunteers in this group, including Mary South who is 93 and still helps to join bread bag loops for ropes every week. Two years ago, another group started up in Howick near the Ambers retirement villages and a group of around 35 retirees meet on a Wednesday afternoon at the Karkloof Farmers’ Market, under the guidance of Carolyn Burchell, to donate their time and willing hands. This last year we were approached by the Senzokuhle Senior Citizens’ Club in Edendale township to ask if they could assist too. There is a group of around 30 women who meet in a community hall, and every Wednesday they help us to prepare the materials we need for our programs. The secretary of the group recently sent us a letter of appreciation in which she said, “We have had lots of fun making these toys and knowing that they serve a cause much greater than us makes us feel blessed to be contributing to the development of future leaders of our country in this way.” more about Singakwenza.
