Following an exciting season opener, the Midlands Chess League is set to host its second tournament of the year, the Midlands Masters, on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
The event will take place at Cowan House Preparatory School, bringing together the region’s top talents and chess enthusiasts for a day of strategic competition.
The tournament features three sections — (Under 12, Under 16, and an Open 16+ division) ensuring competitive and balanced play across all levels. As part of a four-leg annual series, participants will earn valuable league points toward the overall Midlands Championship to be decided in November.
While the series tracks seasonal progress, the league welcomes new participants to join at any stage; players are encouraged to register even if they did not attend the first leg, as each tournament stands on its own with its own set of prizes.
The prize pool for the Midlands Masters has seen a major boost, ensuring that excellence and sportsmanship on the board are well-rewarded. The winners' circle features a variety of premium rewards, including an exclusive home experience for the Under-12 Champion provided by Jumping Joey’s Jumping Castles and high-quality wooden chess sets from Cash Crusaders Capital Centre to foster home practice.
Top performers can also look forward to an outdoor adventure courtesy of Accrobranch Pietermaritzburg and tasty treats from local favorites Steers and Debonairs. Additionally, our Top Girls will be pampered by Craik Speirs and enjoy a signature artisanal treat from Cakeaway.
The event is further supported by Pam Golding, with additional community engagement from local businesses such as Toy Hut.
In an exciting first for the league, accompanying parents and spectators are invited to participate in the Appreciation Draw. Every player’s entry includes one free lucky draw ticket for their supporter, with prizes including a R500 voucher from Frozen For You.
Registration is open to players of all levels. Early sign-up is highly encouraged.
