While we know the wintertime is a little quieter in the garden, there’s still plenty to do to prepare for it to thrive in the spring. Here are a few essential tasks to help you make the most of the season. Here’s what we’ve been busy with:
Pruning
Now is the ideal time to prune plants! Removing old or overgrown branches/stems encourages healthy new growth and ensures a vibrant display when the warmer weather arrives. This week, we have pruned all our roses and hydrangeas. If you are unsure how to prune, we can give you some guidance - just ask! For reference, below are some pictures of how heavily we have pruned our hydrangeas & roses.
Weeding, Clearing and Composting
We recommend taking advantage of the cooler months to tackle weeds and clear out old plant debris. This is the perfect time to refresh your beds and add that valuable organic matter to your compost heap. A little effort now will set you up for a flourishing spring!
Speaking of compost…
Our Farm Compost is looking great, and we have bags available. Rich in nutrients, it’s the perfect way to nourish your soil and give your plants a head start for the season ahead.
Planting For Colour
To add a splash of colour to your garden from late winter to late spring, we recommend poppies and sweet peas. These hardy annuals are easy to grow from seed, and now is the time to plant them.
