Recently, our team managed a critically ill patient who arrived in severe shock and profound anaemia. Despite immediate and dedicated resuscitation efforts, we were unable to save her.
Situations like this are some of the most challenging we face in veterinary care, and they highlight just how vital rapid access to blood products can be in emergency medicine.
Canine blood transfusions can be life saving, but they rely entirely on having a strong, reliable pool of donor dogs ready to help when needed.
At Hilton Veterinary Hospital, we do have a donor programme in place, supported by our dedicated donor cards and an incentive of a free Bravecto for donor dogs. However, we are currently looking to strengthen and grow this programme so that we can ensure blood is always available in critical moments.
