The chessboards were set for another day of fierce competition at Cowan House Preparatory School in Hilton on Saturday, 15th of August, as the Midlands Classic brought together players from across the region for the third leg of the 2026 Midlands Chess League. With three age divisions, the tournament offered players the chance to strengthen their league positions while competing for podium honours and a host of prizes.
The field was overseen by Mr. Zanokuthula Ndlovu, with matches producing the tactical battles and pressure-filled finishes that are a hallmark of competitive chess.
There was plenty of incentive to reach the podium. Debonairs Hilton rewarded the winner in each age category with a Triple-Decker Pizza and a drink. Runners-up received a Panda Meal, and third-place finishers were treated to an ice cream from Steers Hilton.
Female players were recognised in each division, with the Top Girls receiving a pamper voucher from The Nail Garden, together with a bouquet of flower cupcakes by Cakeaway. The Nut Mill contributed a gift hamper for the senior player recognition award.
In the 16+ Open division, the winner received a R250 voucher while spectators had a chance to get involved through a raffle, with the winner taking home the R200 prize both courtesy of The Cookhouse.
The Hilton Chess Club had a strong showing in the Under-12 division, with its players featuring prominently among the leading finishers on the day.

The Midlands Classic shook up the league standings, with several players who had been setting the pace in their divisions either unable to attend or finding the going tougher than expected on the day. Their absence and results opened the door for challengers to close the gap, while players further down the standings made valuable gains. With just one tournament remaining, the title races are wide open, and there is still everything to play for when the Midlands Championship brings the season to a close in November.
The season finale will see players competing for the title of Midlands Champion on the 7th of November 2026, with major prizes up for grabs, including a weekend getaway at Waterford Manor and an adventure experience offered by Karkloof Canopy Tour. The Midlands Chess League is supported throughout the season by Pam Golding Properties and Sign Solutions alongside a dedicated network of local businesses whose partnership helps make each
tournament a memorable experience for players.
New players are encouraged to join and test their skills against players from across the region. With championship glory and exciting prizes on offer for those who reach the podium, there is still plenty to play for as the season heads towards its finale.
