Designed for Independence!
This little box might look simple, but it has an important job in the hand-rearing process. It was specifically designed for young antelope lambs who have learnt to drink from a bottle, helping us start reducing human contact as early as possible.
The box is portable, adjustable and easy to clean, while the built-in bottle holder allows the lamb to feed without needing a person to hold the bottle. Once they understand how the bottle works, we can introduce this setup almost immediately.
This is an important step in limiting habituation. Instead of learning that food comes directly from a person, the lamb begins learning to approach the feeding station independently. This encourages more natural feeding behaviour while still allowing us to closely monitor how much they are drinking.
Once the lamb is drinking well, it graduates to a Boma with a built in bottle holder… now the lamb knows the bottle holder, making the transition much quicker and less stressful
