On Wednesday 23 May the Hilton/St Anne's Art Exhibition took place in the Art Centre. Old Hiltonian Niall Bingham (Lucas '99) opened the exhibition. Niall spoke about unleashing the creativity which you have within you as an artist and encouraged the matrics to pursue their dreams. Niall is currently the Studio Manager and Printmaking Technician at Wits University School of Arts. He commented on the fine work on display from both schools.

Grace College hosted a successful netball festival on Saturday, 19 May 2012. This forms part of the annual Masihambisane (Let's walk together) outreach program at Grace College where community High Schools are given the opportunity to compete against some of our local High Schools. Apart from playing matches, team coaching took place and many new skills were learned. Bhekuximba High School won the spirit trophy, having displayed great sportsmanship during the event – congratulations! Special thanks go to the event organisers, teams and their coaches for making this a memorable day.

Hilton College needs no introduction; the school has been a part of the Hilton community for longer than any of us will remember. Ingrained in the history of our area Hilton is now making history again with The Gates at Hilton.

Another successful HiltonVillage.co.za Business Network session was hosted at Lindsay's yesterday. Mark Heinrich (Mark is pictured on the left with Danny from Lifestyle Fitness Gym and Karin from ITA Business Communication Services now open at The Quarry Centre) shared some insights from his perspective as the owner of Jaxx Restaurant, one of Hilton's success stories, Mike Forsyth from MGF Attorneys imparted a brief and informative review of the Consumer Protection Act which really got people thinking about their relationships with consumers and the sparkle of the evening was the smooth rendition of four well loved songs by Di Veness of Jewellery by Diana! I personally took a look at Lindsay's this morning to ensure that the roof was still in place and discovered that it is. Di is awesome, a lady imbued with many talents.

Lucky draw prizes from Hilton Clothing, Tasha's Fantatsic Fudge, MGF Attorneys, Hilton Village Pharmacy, Niche Website Solutions and Cherri Forsyth of Life Vision coaching were received with great excitement.

Thank you again to Lindsay Rose for the delicious chicken soup, the mushroom, basil and tomato soup with homemade bread as well as those incredible chocolate brownies. Lindsay's is a consistently warm and welcoming space.

Well done to all the participants, in particular the numerous new faces who joined us for the first time, it is such a pleasure to watch the relationships begin and grow. We look forward to the next meeting.

Grace College pupils, Shaun Markham (Gr. 8), Max Addy (Gr. 8), Mark Auge (Gr. 8) and Tino Mahomva (Gr. 10), took part in the C-league of the Pietermaritzburg and District Chess Tournament. They finished in first place – a win to be very proud of. "Congratulations boys and all the best for future contests."

Emma Lunde, St Anne's College pupil represented Kwa Zulu Natal in the SA National Synchronised Swimming Championships in the 13 – 15 age group. The event took place at King's Park in Durban from the 18th to 22nd April and was attended by the top Synchro Swimmers in the Country. Emma competed in four events and achieved two gold medals and two silver medals. She took first place in her solo and team event and second in the figure competition and the duet. In 2011, Emma was one of 10 swimmers chosen to represent South Africa in the 13 -15 age group in the Comen Cup in Italy. This same event will take place in Spain in 2012.

Today's world can be a cruel and unsafe place for many children. Children need to be protected and to know the general rules of safety and where and how to access help should they need it. The Child and Family Welfare Society of Pietermaritzburg is a child protection organization whose mission is the optimum care and protection of all children in our community. As a non-profit reliant and community and public support we are inviting local businesses/offices to join hands with us during child protection week 21-27 May 2012 to help us continue to fulfill our mission - Child protection is everyone's responsibility. How can you do this?

During Child Protection Week we are asking that businesses support and encourage their staff to wear green on Friday 25 May 2012 and at the same time assist us in raising funds and awareness for essential child protection services. Why green? You may ask – well since 2004 the colour green has been associated with child protection following the launch of the national child protection green ribbon campaign. The colour green was chosen as it symbolizes 'conservation, growth, life, self respect, and hope and is the most restful colour'. Also a number of government papers on child protection and family preservation in different countries around the world have been tabled as "green papers"!. By wearing green on this day you will be saying " children matter, child protection is everyone's responsibility and we are committing to the protection of children"

Stickers with the message "join hands to keep children safe" will be made available and we ask for a donation of R5.00 per person. This donation is requested to aid us in our fundraising efforts to help keep our child protection programme's running.

Note: since the beginning of the year we have received over 50 cases of child abuse for investigation and more than half of these have had police case file numbers registered.

The Society also has available silicone wrist bands depicting the same message and these can be pre-ordered at a cost of R8.00 each.

Incentives; well apart from helping to support a worthwhile and essential service cause. Capital Media has come on board and is willing to promote the week including reporting on local community and business participation, all media submissions being co-ordinated through our offices.

This is the first time we are embarking on such a programme and hope to make this an annual event.
