Grace College Pupil's Kickboxing Achievement

She ranked first in her age group in South Africa and second internationally. This is an outstanding achievement and Grace College wishes her all the best for future tournaments.

Hilton Ratepayers Association Electricity Update

ImageforHRAupdateThe Hilton Ratepayers Association advised that the scheduled meeting with the municipal Manager on the 1st was put on hold at their request. The contractor's programme indicated that the upgrading of the line would be completed in August but the mayors (uMsunduzi and uMngeni) instructed the contractor to re-plan to complete the work before winter (see Councillor Pam Passmoor's report below). A meeting will be held this week to discuss monitoring by HRA.

Councilllor Pam Passmoor's report:

The uMngeni and Msunduzi mayors are involved in the repair and upgrading of the Hilton electricity supply. The approved contractors have provided an assessment of the work involved and the cost. The money is being provided so we can rest assured that that part is in order. The initial time frame was that the work would be completed by August. This has been turned down by the mayors as being too long as they want it completed by the time that winter arrives. This instruction has been sent back to the contractors to provide a revised plan. This is due to be provided by the beginning of this week. Both mayors have insisted that the HRA, as the official representative body of the Hilton residents, is involved in monitoring the progress made. We (the HRA) will be called to a meeting later this week to discuss the final plan of action once both mayors have approved the final time-lines, so that the community can be informed and kept up to date. Little Girls Birthday Gift is Missing!

LostDogWe received this heartbreaking plea for help in finding a little girls pet. 'My daughters 10 month old dog ran away, she adopted it from the SPCA 2 month ago for her birthday. The bobbies cell phone network is down and we have put up over 20 posters with no luck. It the second night and she is very worried and down.'

If you have seen or found this dog please contact Hugh on 082 593 3092, he is even willing to pay a reward for the safe return of his daughter's pet, although I am sure Hilton is filled with kind folk who would find enough reward in having the opportunity to reunite a child and her lost dog.

FREE Diabetes Testing on 25th February 2012

lions international LogoHilton Lions in collaboration with Diabetes SA, will be holding a FREE diabetes testing and consulting day on Saturday 25 February 2012, from 08h00 till 14h00, at The Quarry Centre in Hilton.

When you have diabetes, your body either cannot make its own insulin or cannot use insulin properly. Diabetes can be managed with medication, a healthy eating plan and exercise. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas stops producing insulin. It usually starts in young people under the age of 30, and may occur in very young children and infants. The onset is sudden and dramatic.

People who have Type 1 diabetes must inject insulin every day to survive. Insulin dosages are carefully balanced with food intake and exercise programmes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the insulin which the pancreas produces is either not enough or does not work properly. Most people with Type 2 diabetes are over 40. They are usually overweight and do not exercise. Exercise and healthy eating plans are essential for good management, but usually tablets will be prescribed to improve control. Many people with Type 2 diabetes eventually use insulin as they get older.

Signs and symptoms of diabetes:
- You may be very thirsty and go to the toilet often
- You may always feel tired
- Your body can't use the energy it needs from your food
- You may lose weight quickly without dieting
- High blood sugar could cause blurred vision
- You may have dry, itchy skin, and sores may not heal quickly

If you have diabetes, try to follow these guidelines:
- Consult a diabetes nurse educator
- Take your prescribed medication at the correct times
- Be active and exercise regularly, as your body uses insulin better when you exercise
- Exercise also helps with weight loss
- Follow a healthy high-fibre, low-fat eating plan
- Test your blood glucose every day, but not at the same time every day. Test two hours after finishing your meal
- Educate yourself, as knowledge is the key to good management

Grace College Golfing Champ

MGF Attorneys on Cohabitation

Hilton based attorney, Mike Forsyth of MGF Attorneys shares a deeper understanding on cohabitation.
 
Do you live with someone in a cohabitative relationship? What are your rights? Are you entitled to support?
 
Many people think that there is a so called common law marriage that magically comes into being after a certain period of time whether it is three months or three years.
 
Nothing could be further from the truth. You need to know your rights in this regard.
 
What then is a cohabitative relationship? There probably need to be three elements present :
  • A sexual relationship
  • A factual cohabitation
  • A measure of stability to the relationship
If these three elements are present then you can probably be said to be cohabitating. BUT you do need to know that this does not automatically entitle you to support, medical aid, half the furniture or anything else. Our courts have however recognised the concept of a universal partnership which may be of application to some or all of the parties assets. The courts have recognised that there MAY exist an express or implied universal partnership between the parties. Unfortunately there is no law in South Africa defining the relationship of cohabitation and it would pay you to take proper legal advice and enter into a properly drawn contract with the other partner or spouse in this relationship to define the rights and obligations of the relationship.
Some of the things to consider would be :
  • Where will you live?
  • Who will pay the mortgage bond? Will you both contribute and what percentage?
  • Who will pay the monthly living expenses and in what proportion?
  • Will there be a joint bank account?
  • Will you retain separate bank accounts?
  • Who will pay school fees if there are children?
  • Will the furniture be owned jointly or will a separate list be kept of who owns what?
  • Will it be necessary to make a full disclosure of your finances before cohabiting and should separate balance sheets be drawn up?
  • What about inheritances or bequests received by either party?
As you can see there are a myriad questions to ask yourself before setting out on a joint life with someone else (of either sex) if that life does not encompass marriage. Go into your cohabitative relationship with your eyes open and make sure you enter into a suitable contract with one another to prevent any difficulties should a split occur.

Grace College Rotary Exchange to Europe

GraceJan25Grace College pupils, Alexis Beretta and Kelly Wishart, went on a short term Rotary Exchange to Europe during the 2011 December holidays.

Alexis went to Ingelheim in Germany where she stayed with her exchange sister, Saphira. Her host family treated her with visits to museums, art galleries and a skiing trip to Austria.
Kelly went to stay with her exchange sister, Leonie, in Beaurais, France. She visited museums such as the Louvre, went up the Eiffel Tower and enjoyed going to school there for three weeks.

Both pupils had an unforgettable time and feel very blessed to have been given this opportunity.

HRA update on Hiltons Electricity Woes

hra updateThe power outages over the last five weeks have caused extreme hardship and losses for individuals and businesses in Hilton. The electricity service provider is Umsunduzi Municipality for the bulk of the Hilton area and the general problem lies with the aging infrastructure (cables, transformers and switchgear) combined with a lack of maintenance by the municipality. Promises were made more than a year ago by the (then) Umsunduzi officials and politicians of imminent upgrades. Since then there has been little evidence of any of these promises being kept. The newly appointed municipal managers have made public statements regarding the upgrade of the existing supply and we have been given to understand that a contractor has been appointed to identify and rectify the faults in the system. The progress of the physical work is, however, not being published.
 
At this time the HRA  (Hilton Ratepayers Association) sees the reinstatement of a reliable supply to Hilton as the priority. As we know, Eskom has problems of its own and negotiations with Eskom to take over the supply will take many months if not years and the upshot might be that they do not wish to take income from one of their current customers (Umsunduzi). We see this as a long-term alternative and one which will not solve the immediate problems being faced by Hilton. The alternative is to get our municipality (Umngeni) and Umsunduzi to meet and agree to a plan of upgrades, a budget and a time frame for the necessary upgrades.

The HRA had constituted an Electrical subcommittee, led by a professional engineer and resident (Howard Richardson) and assisted by two electrical engineers. The purpose is to assist and support the implementation of the upgrades and, as importantly, to report back so that the ratepayers can be informed of progress. They have already carried out a survey of the affected supply lines and have identified areas that need to be cleared of vegetation to avoid outages caused by falling trees.

A meeting between the respective municipal managers has already taken place and a further meeting is set for 26 January which will include Councillor Passmoor. At this meeting the level of involvement of the HRA electrical subcommittee will be discussed and agreed on.
