Mondi will be doing a timber harvesting programme of 9-10 year-old trees in their plantations on both sides of the N3 from October 2015 through to March 2016. The majority of the trees will be felled around Grace College, with about a third coming out of the Mountain Homes Estate and nursery in the Cowan House/La Popote area. The haul road on the Mountain Homes Estate is the gravel road near Shepstone Place east of Cowan House.
Mondi anticipates harvesting around 50 000 tons of timber (approximately 1450 truck loads), and whilst the community will still have access to the plantation for leisure purposes (walking, running, cycling etc) during this time, in the interests of safety, no one will be allowed within 200m of any harvesting activity.
Mondi welcomes interested members of the community to view the harvesting and extraction of the trees which will use new and interesting technology. They have the highest international safety rating benchmark to maintain so please cooperate with the teams on the ground in the interests of continuing this level of safety.
Below are maps for interest and information.
