HRA AGM Notice 2018

You are cordially invited to our 24th Annual General Meeting as detailed in the attachment. We hope to see you there!

Those of you who do attend the AGM will be apprised of the organizational changes the HRA is making in order to cater for the ever-increasing local government and other challenges that Communities such as ours face. Having set up the necessary systems to cater for these changes we now need to reinforce the capacity of our Committee from a human capital perspective.

As a growing organization, we are in desperate need of additional Committee members to help spread the administrative workload and to boost our effectiveness in terms of initiatives and projects we undertake.

If you are a motivated individual who cares about your community and is willing to donate time and effort towards the Community’s cause please consider joining the HRA Committee. Nominations for Committee members will be called for at our AGM taking place July 25th at Protea Hotel by Marriot® Hilton.

Available positions for the 2018/19 period of service are:
• 1 x Treasurer
• 1 x Secretary
• 1 x Ward 7 Representative (need to reside in Ward 7)
• 3 x General Committee Members
Ratepayers and residents residing in the greater Hilton area (Ward 6 & Ward 7) are eligible for HRA Membership. Committee Members and office bearers are selected from Members in good standing.

Involvement with the HRA at Committee level will provide the following benefits:
• Excellent networking opportunities
• Exposure to the workings of Local Government
• Exposure to the workings of a non-profit organization (NPO)
• Exposure to the workings of a Public Benefit Organization as defined by SARS (PBO)
• Exposure to general administrative duties ranging from bookkeeping through to social media engagement and press releases
• Exposure to projectized initiatives

Here is the eagerly awaited Music in The Hills (MiTH) billing for 4 July;

The name 2G simply refers to the first letter of the lads' surnames. John Goodall is on acoustic guitar and is the lead vocalist, while Ron Gevers contributes the odd harmony (thanks to Fisherman’s Friends), and acts as ‘concussionist’ in chief.

 

19:30-20:00 Matt Singer (Rukuz)

Matt "Oldog" Singer is a seasoned musician from Cape Town. Formerly known for his music projects: “RuKuZ” and “Dead Lucky”, he has toured the African continent both as a band member and a session musician. Since his relocation from Cape Town, he has started a solo project playing mostly originals, and a few re-styled covers from various artists. Matt plays six-, twelve-string and bass guitar, does music production, and has a home recording studio based in Camperdown.

 

Many bands have influenced his life as a musician. Styles ranging from heavy metal act Pantera right down to Texan blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan. Since moving to KwaZulu-Natal, he has played a few of the local venues, and regularly gets asked to return because of the energetic performances that he delivers.

Stormy Monday describe themselves as a "real live band". Real instruments, real voices, no MIDI, no auto-tune and an honest-to-goodness real drum kit (yes kids, you can still see them on Wikipedia). Band members include Sylvia Tempest, @Richard Tempest, Hylton Blignaut and Adrian Haycock. We look forward to welcoming them back to MiTH!

A firm MiTH favourite, at the age of twenty-four, Seb Goldswain is already considered by many of South Africa’s elite professional musicians as one of the top performing guitar players in the country. Seb is a highly versatile musician, having studied jazz guitar and composition up to Honours level at UKZN. Performing with his own original electric band, as well as regularly working with some of SA’s top established artists, Seb performs his own highly energetic original solo acoustic set to an enthusiastic reception. Armed with either an acoustic guitar or with an electric guitar and a Marshall stack, Sebastian has the rare ability to wow and draw crowds into a frenzy with nothing but his original music, electric stage energy and outstanding guitar playing.

The Laddsworth Cross Country Team has had another fantastic season, with our team making up most of the top 10 at each Cross Country Event.

As a woman, Megan is able to connect with other women, helping them understand their natural feminine role. She has chosen to focus her practice on uplifting women and children through holistic health.

Laddsworth Primary School held its annual Winter Woolies Collection drive for the past month.

Antonio Ravell Band is one of Durban's best-known pro musos, and while he often fronts the eponymous Antonio Ravell blues-rock band, this time he'll be going solo.He became famous at MiTH for his “House of the Rising Sugarman," and will be playing a mix of folk, rock and blues on acoustic guitar. He may surprise with an impromptu mashup and a guest or two.

 

Kristen Koning is an indie-folk musician living in Cape Town. Having grown up bilingual, she performs originals and covers in both English and Afrikaans. She’s originally from Pietermaritzburg, KZN, where she performed in choirs, worship teams, and bands growing up. She’s currently studying music at UCT, majoring in Classical Singing.

 

Kristen now focuses her attention on writing music and developing her sound into something honest and relatable, but never losing her sense of experimentation. She’s inspired by artists such as Kings of Leon, Bon Iver, Coldplay, Spoegwolf, Alice Phoebe Lou, and Mumford and Sons. “ (feel free to leave some of it out if you’d like)

 

Brown Jam is a cover band from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The members of the band are all local boys, and have been playing music together for over 10 years. The band consists of Mitchell Reddy on drums, Nathaniel Naidoo on piano, Timothy Naidoo on guitar and vocals, Kevin Williams on lead vocals, and Jordan Govender on bass. The band have been friends for over 15 years and have had the privilege of backing some of the biggest names in South African music such as Loyiso Bass, Lloyd Cele, Noms Khumalo and Vincent Bones, to name a few. They are a polished, refined group of musicians and take their craft seriously. Brown Jam plays music such as Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson, Earth Wind and Fire, R Kelly, The Beatles and many many more. There isn’t a genre that they cannot do!

 

South Wolves is a 4-piece Indie-Pop band. Members are Joel Scott (drums), Ricky Annandale (bass), Jason Hogan (synth and backing vocals), and Eric Scott (guitar and lead vocals). Their influences are Indie bands like Death Cab for Cutie, The Killers and The National. They love to write original songs and express their life experiences through their song writing. Kimberleigh Bodley has spent a lot of her time this year supporting a rural education centre she found in Geluksburg, KZN which recently lost it's UNICEF funding.

Along with the help of friends and family, they have created educational games out of recyclables, repainted the school and held a raffle which raised enough money to establish an art kit and teachers training manuals.

 

There is still so much to do which is why Kimberleigh Bodley together with Lauren Stacey Sturgess and La Rose Des Vents are holding this Christmas in July fundraiser.

 

This event is friendly, for the whole family and we encourage you to spread the news among your friendship circles as all the proceeds will go towards the school.

 

We will be serving a hearty Potjie with salads and rolls and there will be hot-dogs on sale for the younger kiddies.

 

Live music and a jumping castle for entertainment.

 

ART AUCTION- There will be a piece of art on show that will go on auction. This piece has been drawn and donated by Rachael Rautenbach and the money from this piece will also go to the school.

1. Choose flats over houses
Most successful investors will tell you that smaller properties, like flats, generate a better return than houses.
If your budget can stretch that far, go for a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom flat. The greater flexibility will make the property attractive to a wider range of tenants so it’s less likely to lie empty.
2. Be patient
Make sure that you weigh up the pros and cons of an investment before you commit. Always remember that property is a long-term investment. If you want to make money from it, you need to be prepared to be in it for the long haul. Don’t put yourself in a position where you’re forced to sell quickly because you overextended yourself financially.
3. Look for ways to add value
One of the best ways to make money out of a property is to add value to it. Renovating bathrooms and kitchens, for instance, will ensure you get a better return when renting the property out and make you more money when you’re ready to sell.
4. Become tax-efficient
You will never become a property millionaire if you pay the taxman more than you absolutely have to. Speak to a tax advisor on the best entities for buying a property and how you can save tax on your rental income.
5. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket
If you were investing in stocks and shares, any financial advisor worth his salt would advise you to diversify your portfolio so that the risk is spread. The same would be true for property investments. Spread your property portfolio across different properties in different areas to minimise your risk.
6. Exploit local knowledge
There is little point in trying to spot a property bargain hundreds of kilometres away. You’re not an expert on the area and are not likely to be able to judge whether the location, price etc. are good or not. A bargain will be much easier to spot in your own backyard. It will also be much easier to keep an eye on your tenants if you live nearby.
7. Find professional partners you can trust
Unless you’re part accountant, part lawyer and part DIY expert you’re going to need professional help in building up your property portfolio. Finding dependable builders, lawyers and accountants is not just key to maximising your profits but will offer you peace of mind during a complex process.
8. Don’t turn your nose up at unfashionable suburbs
You don’t have to pay a premium for a property in a fashionable area in order to make a decent return. A property in an unfashionable suburb will often give you a return that is as good, if not better than a more “happening” one.

Nikhil Gopal, in Grade 11 at Grace College, participated in a golf competition last week in North Carolina and was placed second overall. He begins the second tournament today. Nikhil won the Bridge Fund Managers Junior series in South Africa earlier this year, this victory earned him a tour to the USA.

Abbie Julius, a Grade 3 pupil at Laddsworth Primary School represented KZN on Thursday 14 June 2018 at the Central Zone Festival, held in Pietermaritzburg. Abbie achieved a Gold Medal for Level 3 (6 - 8 years).

Laddsworth Pupils took part in the South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) Central Zone Festival, which was held in Pietermaritzburg from 14 – 16 June 2018. Over the 3 days 1 050 gymnasts participated.
