The 3rd World Schools Golf Challenge, held in Stellenbosch, South Africa - 46 teams representing 23 Schools and 7 countries took part in the Challenge to be played on the spectacular courses in and around Stellenbosch. A great mix of elite players, developing players and newcomers contested the Challenge to see if they could overtake top Schools from previous Challenge - Millfield School from England and Como Secondary College from Australia.

The opening ceremony held on Sunday the 24th April had all the 182 school children (16 girls) starting to introduce themselves to each other. We were staying at the Protea Hotel Stellenbosch so it gave the girls chance to make many new friends from as far afield as Australia and New Zealand.

The tournament started on Monday the 25th to a cold front that had just hit the Western Cape. So it was off to Erinvale at 6.30am to be there for our 1st tee off at 7.30am. Wow it was cold and the poor girls had to content with the hardest course we were to play on with pumping wind and glass-like greens. So there were long faces from all the girls when they ended the day, but as I said to them they had to remember this was the hardest course they will face in the tournament and this was the first time they had played in a Medal competition ' that is you count every shot until the ' white ball goes into the hole.

Well on Tuesday I woke up at 2am to the heavens opening and the rain did not stop. While driving them all in the car in the dark, heavy rain and cold to Devonvale golf course we were all convinced that the day would be cancelled. But no joy the girls tee'd off in heavy rain which then chose to go on and off most of the day and before we were all in it got windy and freezing cold. But the girls come in with some smiles as they had all improved on the previous day. Wednesday was a rest day and the girls spent time with family. Thursday looked so much better, nippy in the morning but the SUN was shining. So off to De Zalze we went. A beautiful golf course under the Stellenbosch mountains but poor drainage on the course, so I know the girls battled in getting their drives to go anywhere as there was no run. But their game was starting to get consistent and better rounds for all was the result.

Friday was to Stellenbosch Golf Club with the "promise" of good weather. Well that did not last the whole day and it was back to taking the umbrellas out, putting on the rain suits and trying to keep the hands and club grips dry. That went on and off all day. But a happy exhausted group came off the course having I am sure enjoyed the many moments, good and bad of the tournament.

Friday late afternoon we all caught the bus to the Prize giving evening held at Moyo – Spier. This turned out to be a very pleasant surprise for us. The tournament had started with 6 girls teams registered to play, but on the first day some girls from the other countries could not come so the Mixed team division grew by 5 teams and we were the only girls' team. Well that was not our fault - so I am happy to say that St Annes won the Girls Division, both Nett and Gross competition. A much appreciated gesture considering the hard work the girls put in to this very challenging tournament for all.

Saturday was a quick chance to say bye to friends made and then off the airport for all of us to return home and to St Annes with our 2 trophies and 2 medals each.

Four Hilton College boys have been chosen for the South African u 16 Rowing team to compete in the prestigious Holland Beker (one of the biggest regattas in Europe) in Amsterdam in June.

On Sunday 1 May the boys of Churchill House from Hilton College hosted a Fun Day for previously disadvantaged children from the local community.

Boys dressed up as clowns, they had a water slide and a jumping castle to mention a few items, so that these young kids had a great day. The boys had organised a number of prizes and there was also a dancing competition which took place.

At the end of the day each child was given a "sweety pack" filled with lots of goodies, and this was in addition to a scrumptious lunch they enjoyed! A good day was had by all.

Finally, your Royal Wedding invitation has arrived. This is an opportunity to indulge your romantic side at an opulent high tea affair at our Protea Hotel, Hilton. The event is a fundraiser organised by Just Boutique and The Marriage Meander with profits being channelled to Sheperd's Keep for abandoned babies.

I've been told introductions are all important. It's a time to make it or break it. Some go as far as to say that when you meet a person for the first time, the first 10 seconds will give an impression, which to a large extent will determine whether you will like that person or not.

Its weird isn't it? Especially considering that there are so many kinds of greetings, standards, norms and cultural differences that it's often like throwing darts in the dark. In western cultures we shake hands on greeting, in Greece they embrace and kiss each other on each cheek and there is a Filipino tradition on Guam to put one's right knuckles against an older person's forehead. In some internet chat sites people may even greet you with "hi, ASL?" and I'm not even kidding when I tell you it simply means "hi, age, sex, location?" Maybe the 10 second rule does apply...

Well, I'm 27, male and I live right here in HiltonVillage.co.za country. I believe the first 10 seconds do count, I believe that impressions matter but I also believe that they only get your foot in the door. To build relationships you actually need to get to know someone and have an interest in them. There needs to be something under the surface. That is why I have made sure you can read this entire article in just 10 seconds; this time I am just kidding!

The other thing that you need to know about me is that my passion is property. And that is essentially how I have ended up writing a quarterly property supplement for HiltonVillage.co.za. I love every facet of property, I love walking through the naked structures as they are being built, I love the fact that property is as objective as art and yet can be analysed as an investment vehicle. I love its many facets and its complex character.

And so I hope to be able to share that interest with you and let you share in my experiences as an estate agent and project manager. What I'd really like is to get a bit of dialogue going and to have some input from you – let me know what you'd like to hear about. For today I don't want to have a look at anything specific but would rather just broaden the view. We seldom have enough time and are so busy in our lives that we don't ever really take a step back and take a bird's eye view. So, I think it's appropriate that for this first HiltonVillage.co.za property supplement we take a quick snapshot of Hilton and the property market. I bet it's changed more than you realise in the last little while...

Just take the Quarry Centre for instance, Old Mutual have left and the new management have taken over and things are happening! For starters there is going to be a new restaurant emerging and I'm told it's going to be a Mediterranean style affair called Jaxx. Action Coach has moved into the old restaurant premises and have really set them selves up there. There is a redevelopment plan that will change the face of the centre, introduce new tenants and really add value to the area. I work in the centre and so am at the coal face but you don't have to look very far to see that there is a lot of work being done and that it will without a doubt have a huge impact on the Hilton community.

The commercial element that has established itself in Hilton is another area that needs careful attention. Mondi are now taking their offices in the new building at 400 Old Howick Road. Hilton has become a place where business happens and where businesses want to be. For so many reasons its commercial element has grown in fits and spurts and has become an every day part of Hilton.

Across the highway Garlington continues to grow and absorb a large amount of residential growth. This residential development continues to sell well with a large number of houses being built, this is a sure-fire sign that people want to be in Hilton. Garlington has also done us a favour by introducing Nicolson's which provides Hilton with an eatery with a difference. The new Protea Hotel, Hilton has opened its doors and is a world class hotel. It is well located, comfortable, well decorated and well run. Crossways has just been relaunched. I went there for lunch the other day and was blown away by my steak and Guinness pie. It was superb.

The point, I suppose, is that Hilton is happening. There is a large amount of money being invested here and that is a clear indication that this property supplement is going to have a lot to talk about. I am firmly bullish about Hilton as an area and about the prospects of all types of property in Hilton. I've put my money where my mouth is and set up a property business here! Where money is being spent values go up. Take stock, think about it.

The Mounted (Horse) Unit has just arrived in Hilton and will be here for the two weeks.  This is an exceptionally long stay in Hilton, they usually spend just a few days here as this Mounted Unit covers all of KwaZulu-Natal. Our local Crime Information Officer has asked the Hilton Community to kindly supply buckets of water in front of their properties for the horses to have a drink as they patrol the various areas of Hilton.

There are six gorgeous horses in the Unit. Namely Gulliver a black horse, First Love a thoroughbred Bay, Dirk who is a little black horse, Danielle the Arab, Dixon the small black Friesian and the interesting character of the group is Chips a warm-blood cross Friesian, who apparently loves marshmallow Easter eggs as well as jelly babies! We do believe all the horses love apples and carrots too!!!

On Wednesday (25 May) St Anne's College hosted the annual Hilton College and St Anne's Matric Art Exhibition at St Anne's College.  Ian Calder, a lecturer at UKZN and artist opened the exhibition and commented on the fine art work on display.

For Stephanie MacDonald of St Anne's, being picked as part of the 2012 Ladies' Hockey Olympic selection is the culmination of years of dedication, passion and hard work. Her spontaneous decision to volunteer as goalkeeper for the school u14 team in 2007, following in her father's hockey footsteps, was the catalyst for her taking up this position. What ensued has been a number of accolades within the sport, with her becoming a member of the Olympic team as the pinnacle.

Representing the St Anne's first team on tour to Singapore and a permanent member of this team since 2010, Stephanie also plays u18 Midlands Field Hockey, u19 KZN hockey and is part of the Zimbabwean u17 Olympic Qualifiers Team. She has also received full hockey colours twice, and plays indoor hockey, although she describes it as a completely different sport altogether. Her invitation on to the Olympic team stemmed from her participation in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in East London, where she played first string goalie and obtained man of the match for the game against South Africa. As a direct result of this, she received an invitation to join the Zimbabwean National Women's Hockey Squad for the African Olympic Qualifiers.

Stephanie attributes a large portion of this achievement to her time at St Anne's. Her hockey career at the school has allowed her to play matches, both at home and on tour, within and against her own age group until she joined the first team in 2010. She makes mention of the unlimited support from numerous coaches, in particular Mrs Randall who recognised her potential and encouraged her parents to invest in her keeper kit. In addition to this, she has wonderful memories with team mates ' on and off the field ' and the school has always encouraged her to push the bounds of her personal best; helping through the hard times and fuelling her love for goalkeeping.

Balancing academics and her training programme is a commendable feat, but something she appears to have mastered in her Matric year. In addition to this, she plays three first team sports as well as being involved in other extra-curricular activities. However, she is managing a training programme that will thoroughly prepare her for what is to come. Playing sport for at least two hours a day, at least one hour of which is hockey, she also carefully monitors what she eats and does some exercises in her room prior to lessons in the morning. When she feels her fitness slipping, she runs in the afternoons. During the holidays, in addition to playing with the Squad, she plays with her brother who is a very talented field player.

Whilst still getting to know some of her Olympic team mates, Stephanie knows many of them from her time on the Junior Olympic Team, and has the added advantage of having her best friend from Zimbabwe on the team.

Although she would like to keep playing hockey forever, Stephanie understands the importance of a back-up plan, and is hopefully off to university in USA on a hockey scholarship, where she is looking at studying pre-med in the interests of becoming another of her passions ' a forensic pathologist.

St Anne's Has Got Talent was organised by a group of Matric girls ' Kirsty Gourlay, Georgina Edwards, Lauren Allen and Zizile Mthethwa ' as part of their music continuous assessment mark. The task was to arrange and co-ordinate a musical production. Along the same vein as the popular television show in America and Britain, the girls hand-picked a selection of students at the end of an audition process, across a variety of disciplines, to perform in front of a panel of judges.

With the advice of Mark Stenhouse and Jeff Judge, the show took place on Friday, 13 May in front of the school. The judges were singing teacher and notable vocalist Tracy Stark, and final year music student and hugely talented jazz performer, Jonathan Judge. Unlike its televisual counterpart, St Anne's Has Got Talent did not have individual crits of each performer at the end of each segment. Rather, comments were briefly made at the end of the show, before announcing the winner. The result was a successfully-staged performance in music and dance. The show was an expos?? of St Anne's talent in a number of genres ranging from contemporary dance and hip-hop to piano, singing and marimbas.

Opening with the marimbas got the crowd on their feet, as the ideal opener for the evening. What followed was a plethora of the popular, the beautiful, the well-delivered, controlled, funky and harmonious. The variety made for the undivided attention of every member of the audience, as the rehearsal and energy of the performers was appreciated by their peers. The poise and delivery of every girl on stage is commendable and, as judge Tracy Stark made mention during the award ceremony, it is no small feat to perform on stage in front of such an audience ' something that takes courage and skill. This was undoubtedly made easier by the support and praise from their peers on the night.

The night was won by Tania and Sphe's wild, contemporary dance, including formidable break dance moves, with a slick sophistication. Their dance was brilliantly choreographed and they obviously enjoyed performing. The audience went crazy with applause, setting the benchmark and making the decision of the judges relatively easy in terms of their popularity.

Before the show, Jonathan Judge commented, "Talent only enables us to practise more efficiently – it doesn't give us an excuse to coast along. Nothing in life worth doing is ever easy." The performers and organisers of St Anne's Has Got Talent are proof of the successful outcome of preparation and perseverance – the night becoming a showcase of the undeniable talent amongst the girls and the hard work associated with putting on a production of this calibre.

Doreen Philip of DP Design has 19 years experience as a graphic designer specializing in Below-the-Line advertising which entails print and electronic media and developing Corporate Identities.

Doreen has always been passionate about art and visual communication and so decided to follow a career in Graphic Design enabling her to use her artistic ability. She studied Graphic Design at Natal Technikon, Durban 1989 - 1991.

Her career as a Junior Designer began in 1992 at Growgraphics in Kloof. Their niche market at the time was annual reports and so she gained much experience from illustration, to design, layout and typesetting of annual reports over the 5-year period she was with them. The first few years before moving into computer aided design she did a lot of illustration in different mediums from watercolours, pastel, pencil, paper to fabric. By 1995, she was a Senior Designer and in 1996, Studio Manager for a year which involved overseeing production and the design team of 4.

In 1997, having been married for 3 years and with her first baby on the way, Doreen decided to start her own business Blue Fish Design. This business operated successfully for 9 years. In March 2008 Doreen relocated to Hilton due to her husband being transferred to Pietermaritzburg. Having grown up and being schooled in Howick made this an easy move to familiar territory!

Doreen loves her family! Married 17 years Doreen and her husband Barry have 3 kids, Mitchell (13), Keziah (8) and Joel who is just 10 weeks old! Her passions include, hiking, especially in the Drakensberg, mountain biking, camping, gardening, painting and exploring different mediums and crafts and of course getting her nose stuck into a good book with a cappuccino!

Her family, being a mom, having time to explore her art and fuel her creativity, having time to sow into her local church, North Hills Church, are all very important values of hers. Doreen looks forward to growing DP Design and being of service to the Hilton and Pietermaritzburg community.

Extra Lessons for school learners are a good idea in the second term. The effort will help your child to consolidate concepts or sections of work. The opportunity to have extra lessons now in the second term is especially helpful for grade 6 and grade 11 learners!

For grade 11's the mid-year school report or results are very important as they, together with the end of year report are considered for university acceptance.

The grade 6 school report is considered for application to high schools. Since the second term is an "exam" term there is even more reason to consider giving your child a boost with extra lessons - in a subject they battle with or in a subject that they could be performing better.

Laddsworth Primary School pupils were recently treated to some time with Sharky, the Sharks rugby team mascot. The children were thrilled to have an opportunity to see and even touch Sharky as he worked his magic for the enthusiatic crowd.

Those of us who enjoy walking in the forests around World's View observe many seasonal changes ' and surprises ' causing food for thought and often much pleasure. Of course there's always the not-so-pleasant surprises too, but let's kick off with one of the good stories''

Harvesting ' the felling of trees in the plantations ' takes place regularly.  After the trees have been felled, trimmed, sorted and carted away the area is subsequently cleared and the undergrowth burned.  Our bull mastiff, Petal (named so by the SPCA!) who revels in her daily forest walks was nose-down, disappearing from the trail. She found a pool of water the size of a small swimming pool. The pool is fed by an underground spring; obviously the recent rains had increased the size of the pool due to there being no trees to suck up any water.

We wonder if Petal's Puddle pictured below, is this the source of the Dorpspruit? After discussions between WVC and NCT it has been agreed to leave the area either side of the spruit as grassland.  One small success for World's View Conservancy!
