Winterskloof Sector Forum - Illegal Hunting

The increased use of hunting dogs in our area has significantly increased over the past year. The issue has been discussed at our last cell leaders meeting and we are trying to find the correct protocol on responding and reporting these illegal activity. We wish to support the Winterskloof Conservancy and ask anyone who is interested to attend the workshop/meeting on this topic at Old Main Brewery on 13 September 2016 at 6pm with the people from SACAN and SAPS. Details below.
 
There have been incidents of illegal hunting in our area recently, ranging from hunters using bow and arrows, firearms, snares, to packs of dogs. We are extremely concerned by the slaughter of the remaining wildlife, already under threat from the loss of habitat to development, fences and walls blocking corridors, infestation by invasive alien plants and the drought.
 
We would like to hold a community meeting for Hilton residents to enable us to understand the law and how to respond when we hear of, or see illegal hunting in progress. Our partners: SA CAN, Hilton SAPS, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the Honorary Officers and the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) have been doing a lot of work to raise awareness of the issues in communities, train SAPS members and develop an integrated response.
 
Brian Jones from SA CAN will provide us with the legal framework and the contact details for how to respond using their “one stop” portal. We will then discuss development of an integrated and effective local response to illegal hunting. Suggestions for the way forward have already been received - please bring your ideas and how to implement them.
 
Tea/coffee and snacks will be served, so come early if you need to be fed and watered!

MommyHeart opens in Hilton

MommyHeart 500 copyMommyHeart is the fulfilment of a dream of two friends committed to and passionate about antenatal education and postnatal support. We are both registered nurses and midwives, and in addition to this we are both mums, and have experienced fairly recently, and in an ongoing way, the trials and triumphs of this incredible journey into motherhood.
Our most important goal is to come alongside other mums and mums-to-be, and to provide support and information. We want to see each mum moving forward into this exciting new stage of life with joy and confidence, and with a sense of security in knowing that you are not alone. We know, and hope to instill in you the knowledge, that as a mum you hold in your hands and hearts everything you need for your pregnancy and the early days of your little one’s life.
We offer antenatal education, breastfeeding advice and postnatal support, and try to make this support as accessible as possible for pregnant ladies by offering courses in a number of locations, and providing postnatal support when and where it is most needed through in-hospital and home visits. We want to see mum’s prepared for, and supported through their pregnancies, and into the early weeks and months of their babies lives. We are mums ourselves and we always try to keep it real, as we support you through the ups and downs of mommy-hood!

Laddsworth holds Senior Primary Inter-House Athletics

laddsworth girls athletics 250x220Laddsworth Primary School held its Senior Primary Inter-House Track and Field Events on 18 and 19 August. The 4 houses Duiker, Kudu, Nyala and Oribi competed against each other, with Nyala coming out as the overall winner for 2016 and also won the Relay Trophy. Oribi won the Spirit Trophy. Laddsworth would like to congratulate the following pupils who broke records:
 
• High Jump Girls Open - Megan Hudson (Kudu) – Height 1.45m
• Long Jump Girls Under 9 - Keira Burton (Oribi) – Distance 3.61m
• 1 200m Boys Open - Scott Harvey (Kudu) – Time 3m54,25
• 100m Boys Open - Melo Gumbi (Nyala) – Time 12,56

Dargle MTB Race

Hannah Scholtz, Matt Bisset, Eben and Carla van Eeden took part in the 6km cycle race. Karla van Eeden also took part in the zoom dash, where she came 3rd. Well done boys and girls!

NOTICE: REVIEW OF EIA REPORT AND PUPLIC MEETING INVITATION

slr notice2Scoping and EIA Process: Application for Environmental Authorisation with regards an Exploration Right Application for Petroleum on various farms in the KwaZulu-Natal Province (12/3/291 ER)
 
Rhino Oil and Gas Exploration South Africa (Pty) Ltd (Rhino Oil and Gas) has lodged an application for an exploration right with the Petroleum Agency South Africa (PASA) in terms of Section 79 of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002 (MPRDA) and an application for environmental authorisation of exploration activities in terms of Section 24(5) of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (NEMA). The application is subject to a Scoping and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process that is being undertaken in terms of the EIA Regulations 2014 (GNR 982, 8 December 2014). PASA accepted the Scoping Report on 10 June 2016, indicating that the EIA may proceed.
 
Scope Changes: Subsequent to the Scoping Report, Rhino Oil and Gas reduced the extent of the ER application area through exclusion of all protected areas. Rhino Oil and Gas has also reviewed additional geological data, determined that certain areas are unlikely to be prospective and has excluded these areas. A map of the revised application area is available from SLR Consulting (Pty) Ltd (SLR). Rhino Oil and Gas has also excluded ground-based exploration activities (core hole drilling and seismic surveys) from the application for environmental authorisation. The current focus of the application and the related environmental assessment work is now only on remote exploration techniques (including analysis of existing data & aerial full tensor gradiometry gravity survey). If approved, Rhino Oil and Gas would be in a position to conduct the remote exploration techniques. Should Rhino Oil and Gas propose in future to conduct ground based exploration activities they would need to make further application to PASA and undertake a separate environmental assessment and authorisation process. A benefit of this revised approach is that future applications and assessments of ground based exploration activities would be focused on specified sites.
This notice serves to inform Interested & Affected Parties (I&APs) that SLR has prepared an environmental impact report (EIR), including an environmental management programme. The purpose of the EIR is to summarise the EIA process followed to date; provide an overview of the proposed project and the affected environment; present the assessment of the potential impacts; and set out the recommended mitigation measures. The EIR is being made available to I&APs for a 30-day comment period from the 13th of September 2016 until the 14th of October 2016. Copies of the EIR have been placed at the following locations for public review:

Alternatively, contact SLR and an electronic copy of the EIR can be emailed or provided on CD. An executive summary of the EIR is also available on request in English or isiZulu.
 
All comments on the EIR should be submitted to SLR at the details shown below. Comments received will be used to update the EIR, as relevant, and copies of all the comments will be included with the EIR when submitted to PASA. Please ensure that your comments reach SLR on or before the 14th of October 2016.

Pietermaritzburg Orchid Society Show

orchid showThe Pietermaritburg Orchid Society is hosting the South African National Orchid Show at the Carbineers Drill Hall, Geere Rd, Pmb, 9am to 8pm on Friday 9th September; 9am to 4pm Saturday 10th September and 9am to 2pm Sunday, 11th September.
 
There will be twelve displays from orchid societies and commercials around the country, and vendors from Ecuador, Thailand, America and around South Africa. An event not to be missed .There will also be a display of schools art, and as well as orchid vendors there will be garden plants, bromeliads, tillandsias, zygo cactus, and epiphyllums for sale.
 
A tea garden will be catering for the hungry and thirsty.
 
Entrance fee is R20 per person, children under 12 free of charge, and free parking on the parade ground.

To celebrate women in their uniqueness, Diverse Human Resources hosted a table of amazing women, who are ‘in business’ or as the one poster
said “Women Mean Business”.
 
We were so proud to have Nola from Cunningpac, Brenda from Brennell Desserts, Caroline from DHR, Jenny from JAW, Tracy from ABSFood, Shelley from XTec, Melissa from Ramsay Engineering, Daphne from Nashua PMB and Cassy Fourie from The Midmar Group join us. Melanie our PCB CEO joined in welcoming our guests.
 
We were also celebrating being in business for more than 6 years. Our very special clients have contributed to our success as we have contributed to theirs. Unfortunately, our male clients were not 100% committed to the dress code for the event, so they sadly could not join us on the day.
