A NEW "coffee route" modelled on the concept of a loyalty programme is to be launched in a suburb that many people may not automatically associate with coffee: Hilton.

"People think we have only one of everything in Hilton. They have no idea that there are eight coffee shops," said Vince Wessels (22), an estate agent at Harcourts Hilton and the inspiration behind the new initiative. Named "the Harcourts Hilton Route" the initiative will entitle holders of a "coffee card" to a special deal at one of the participating coffee shops. These are: Hydrangea House in Winterskloof, Dulce, Jaxx and Lindsay's at the Hilton Quarry Centre, La Popote on Dennis Shepstone Drive, Nicolson's at Garlington, Sticky Fig at the Rotunda, Tasha's Fudge and Old Main Brewery (previously Crossways). Deals include a deduction off the cost of a meal, or a free coffee or cappuccino with a meal.

Andrew Line, owner of Harcourts Hilton, explained that he has lived in Hilton for 30 years and Wessels (22) is Hilton born and bred, and a product of Howick High. "We are passionate about living here, so the coffee route is designed to promote Hilton and encourage people to appreciate the lifestyle it offers. It really is unique, offering the sophistication of the café culture in a semi-rural, luxuriously gardened village setting. We hope that the Coffee Route will promote Hilton and attract more people to come and settle here," Line said.

Mark Heinrich, owner of Jaxx said: "Harcourts Hilton is very proactive in the area so we are very pleased to be involved with them. This is a great initiative for us, which we expect to bring new feet through the door. It is also great for the area's food outlets to be co-operating in a joint venture of this nature instead of always being involved in fierce competition." Jaxx is offering 15% off breakfast or lunch.

Lesley Strachan of La Popote said: "I think this is a fantastic initiative and a great way to introduce people to the restaurant. We function purely by word of mouth so this is a wonderful new way to make people aware of us." La Popote is offering free cake with a coffee. Lindsay's is offering a free cappuccino with breakfast and owner Lindsay Rose said: "I am happy to support this as it is a home-grown initiative involving local businesses."

One outlet that many people may not associate with coffee is Tasha's Fantastic Fudge at the Jacaranda Centre. Fudge fanatics can enjoy a free fudgescotti (a biscotti with fudge) with a cup of good coffee as Tasha's serves cappuccinos and filter coffee.

The Harcourts Hilton Route will be launched on Saturday September 1 at the Old Main Brewery's Spring Fair, a family market and fun day. Coffee cards will be available at the Harcourts stall.

Grace College held their annual Inter-house athletics day on Saturday, 18 August 2012. All athletes need to be commended for their great efforts in the field and track events. Overall, 14 records were broken on the day. Ararat sports house were the winners once again, with Carmel in second place and Sinai in third place.

Special thanks go to the event organisers, staff, pupils and parents who assisted in making this day a huge success. We wish all athletes, who will be participating in the up-and-coming Inter-High athletics meeting, well and know that they will do us proud.

HiltonVillage.co.za recently met with the Zunckels at their home to see how their newly installed grey water garden irrigation system is working out. Kevan and Karen are both environmentalists and Karen is the founder of iPhepha Beads and Co-ordinator of SLIP the Sustainable Living and Indigenous Plant fair.

I am happy to report that their kitchen and vegetable garden are both flourishing with this simple and effective Water Rhapsody unit in place. The unit is unobtrusive and quietly pumps water through the irrigation system to supply both gardens when the reservoir reaches a certain volume. The total capacity of the tank is 100l and it pumps out at a pace that ensures the grey water does not sit and stagnate. In the photographs below Kevan reveals the filter baskets and you will see the unit is almost completely submerged.

The following costing prediction shared by Karen Zunckel, 'The average person uses about 150 litres of water a day. Assuming 100 litres of that is grey water; a family of four will be reusing 400l of grey water a day. At the current cost of R 7.90/kl, a Garden Rhapsody system, which costs R7k + R1k pipes and fittings, the return on investment will be ±7 years.'

'There is an increasing demand for grey water systems and rain water harvesting solutions from our clients. It is very encouraging to see our community becoming increasingly environmentally conscious and water savvy. Naturally one must consider the monetary savings made when you're able to water your garden with "waste water". Any household wastewater is considered grey water, as opposed to that from toilets known as black water. 50-80% of your household water is grey water i.e. bath and shower water, washing machine waste, basins waste water. It is not advisable to recycle waste water from your kitchen sink or dishwasher as the water is often laden with food solids and fats, and is considered black water. One should exercise caution with detergents going through the system that may be toxic to nature and rather use biodegradable detergents. According to Guy Jubber, the local Water Rhapsody Agent, 'a Garden Rhapsody system will also increase the value of your property for resale'.
One of the biggest problems we have in Hilton with the current waste system is that due to the high clay content of the soil, our soak-away soon overfill and have an extremely limited life span. Continually rebuilding a soak-away becomes an expensive process. Installing a grey water system is affordable and is able to drain water from your entire household and then be used to water your lawn/garden with water that would otherwise be futile for future use. Why pay double for treated water and waste earths' most precious resource when such a simple solution exists!' said Graham Mallen owner of Will Forsyth Plumbing and Go Green who installed the water Rhapsody for the Zunckels.

The Zunckels are passionate about our environment and their home is a great example of how water can be better managed to ensure food security and ease the demand on municipal supply. Next they plan to add more solar panels and they are also very impressed with Warren Confait's Biogas Digester options avaiable through Renen. We look forward to future updates from them and would love to hear how other Hilton families are getting off the grid!

Mary and Vince Kennedy celebrate their 60th (diamond)wedding anniversary at Amberglen, Howick. They were married in Gwelo on the 9th of August 1952 in Southern Rhodesia.

Hilton Covered, an annual coffee table magazine focused on Hilton, will soon be available. As a result of a this new business venture, sparked by HiltonVillage.co.za and pioneered by Desiree Hickinbotham, owner of HiltonVillage.co.za and Doreen Philip, owner of DP Design, Hilton Cares the social responsibility focus of HiltonVillage.co.za has found legs.

From the start we agreed that the opportunity to produce an annual coffee table magazine for Hilton that would achieve something exciting for the HiltonVillage.co.za social responsibility focus, Hilton Cares and be a fabulous marketing platform for Hilton businesses was enough motivation to pursue this new concept to completion.

On Tuesday the 7th of August 2012 at a HiltonVillage.co.za Business Networking Meeting, the donation of R10, 000.00 was handed to Zandile of Never Never Land Crèche. This money will enable the crèche to replace a leaking asbestos roof which will ease health issues, discomfort and social stress for their little children.

With continued success, Hilton Covered will select a beneficiary from those projects showcased in Hilton Cares to receive a donation annually.

The Hilton College Marimba Band competed in an international competition in Johannesburg recently and returned with 2 trophies. They won the High School Big Band and Open Band categories. Besides doing very well they also stirred the crowds with their rendition of Paradise by Cold Play.

A personal budget, yes the tedious exercise of working out personal monthly income and expenses. When did you last do a personal budget?

There are many tools to help us track our monthly expenditure. Banks for example categorise our payments. Make the most of these tools.

Prepare a simple spreadsheet of income less expenses. Spilt expenses up into essential, other and luxury. This exercise will help identify what the minimum amount you can live on. If hard financial times hit us in the face, our essential budget can kick in and other expenses will go on hold.

Budget to pay off all your debt. Implement a plan to resolve all debt and to stay out of debt.

Plan to save during good times. Over the next year or two, try to save at least three times your monthly salary. This savings will give you three months of recovery in hard times.

The two hours you spend today thrashing out a personal budget could save you years of hardship. Give it a try.

Pupils at Laddsworth Primary School in Hilton recently held a Denim for Diabetes Day to raise funds for the SA Diabetes Association. Pupils were allowed to wear denims to school in exchange for bringing a R5.00 donation and receiving a sticker that read "Denim for Diabetes".

HiltonVillage.co.za has received a letter advising that a thoroughfare between Sundale Drive and Groenekloof Road in Hilton, which has been used by cyclists, walkers, joggers and domestic workers for many years has been blocked.

We have been advised that the thoroughfare reduces the distance between Groenekloof Road and Sundale Drive from 2km to a little stroll.

Grace College enjoyed beautiful snowfall yesterday and the pupils and staff grabbed hold of the opportunity to go out and enjoy the experience. Sadly, it didn't settle due to the rain, but was exciting nevertheless.

The 6th Annual KZN Schools' Golf Championships took place at Royal Durban Golf Club on 30/31 July 2012.

After two rounds the results were as follows:

KZN Schools' Individual Champions on scores of 145, shared by Keaton Bottriell of Hilton College and Greg Royston from Kearsney.

KZN Schools' Team Championships was won by Hilton College, 916, second was Westville, 926 and third Michaelhouse 927. This is the third year in a row that Hilton have won the team event.

The KZN Schools' Golf Teams were also selected for 2012. Hilton had two boys selected for the A team, Guy Waterhouse and Keaton Bottriell and three boys for the B team, Jarryd Edy, Chris Saunders and Matt Lauryssen.
