Take the Howick/Tweedie turnoff from the N3. Follow signs into Howick and turn left at the fourth traffic light (SuperQuick on the corner) onto the Karkloof/Rietvlei Road. After 17km, turn left at the Karkloof Canopy Tour sign and follow further Karkloof Canopy Tour signs for 2km.
The Karkloof Canopy Tour® is an eco-experience that takes people on a two hour adventure through the Karkloof indigenous forest just 20km outside Howick in KZN, which is also home to the special Samango monkey population.
The canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 35m above the forest floor. The tour comprises of 12 platforms and 10 slides that zig-zag down a forested valley. The longest slide is 200m! The scenery is spectacular and professional guides provide interesting facts about the forest ecology during the tour.
The tour begins with a detailed safety briefing followed by a 'Kitting up' session where full body harness, pulleys and climbing equipment are put on and checked for safety. A short scenic drive to the top of the Karkloof valley and it is time to monkey around!
When you begin the tour, a new world unfolds as one Zip-lines on a steel cable to the first platform. All groups are escorted through the forest canopy by a lead guide and a follow guide to ensure your safety. The platforms are built high up in the forest canopy and all offer different views of the surrounding forest, a magnificent 20m waterfall, clear sparkling forest stream and the expansive Karkloof valley far below.
The forest is home to Emerald Cuckoos, Knysna Loeries, a wide variety of raptors and if you are lucky, you could spot the elusive Narina Trogon or endangered Cape Parrot. A variety of mammals also inhabit the forest, but it is the loud calls and fearsome tree swinging of the Samango monkeys that you will remember best.
The tour is suitable for people from 6 years and up.
