JG Afrika
The South African consulting engineering firm JG Afrika started in 1922, specialising in road and railway engineering. The company has since expanded and diversified into many fields, but true to the spirit of its founders, the firm remains committed, through dedication and professional integrity, to providing the highest quality of consulting engineering services for the benefit of the community and environment.
The firm gets its name from two great pioneers of the engineering profession, John L.S. Jeffares and Harold (Hal) H. Green. It began in 1922 with the establishment of the JLS Jeffares Consulting Practice in Johannesburg by John Jeffares, who was later awarded an OBE for pioneering a railway route from Victoria Falls to Walvis Bay. Five years later he was joined by Hal Green and together they undertook work throughout sub-Saharan Africa, including the hydrological study and access roads for Kariba Dam. In 1947 they formed a partnership and the nameJeffares & Green was used for the first time.
The present
Today, under the leadership of Managing Partner Chris Robinson, the firm has offices throughout South Africa and focuses on the provision of consulting services in all fields of civil and structural engineering, as well as environmental services. Apart from the main operating company the Group also comprises specialist companies operating in the fields of geotechnical, environmental and geoscience consultancy, pavement technology, traffic and transportation, materials testing, and institutional and social development.
In recent years the Group has been increasingly involved in turnkey projects in sub-Saharan Africa, where it has been part of the financing structure and has assumed the role of managing contractor. The Jeffares & Green Group holds full ISO 9001:2008 certification and was the first South African consulting practice to attain this certification for its full range of services, including construction administration. As a Member of Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) Jeffares & Green is automatically affiliated to FIDIC and GAMA.
