NDABEZINHLE CRÈCHE is a registered non-profit organisation (084-180-NPO) which offers early childhood development. It is situated about 6 kilometres from the centre of Hilton on a hill above the Sweetwaters valley.
It was established in 2004 with overseas donations, but we are now very dependent on future donations to keep it going. As you can well imagine, it cannot operate without staff (two staff is the minimum requirement).
The enrolment is anything from 30 to 40 children 2-4 years old. Some of the parents are single Mums who are still in school and therefore unemployed and surviving on a child grant, but are mostly very committed to the monthly school fees (which are minimum). These school fees help a bit towards the two meals provided daily (and keep the parents feeling responsible for their children's care and education) but the Crèche will never be 100% sustainable on school fees alone (maybe only 30% sustainable).
The Principal, Nelly Ngubane, in her thirties, has an amazing gift with children and a real sense of calling. The Crèche is a great asset to this poverty stricken community where HIV/AIDS is rife and unemployment a huge problem. Nelly has a Level 4 Early Childhood Development diploma.
In addition, an Educational Support Programme was started mid- 2016, where two more young adults are employed to (1) supervise the homework of primary school children in the afternoons, provide access to reading with a small library established, and provide organized games and even dance programmes on afternoons when homework is complete and (2) assist with Matric studies in the evenings. This programme operates from the local Crossways Church facility in the community.
A word from the Principal, Ms Nelly Ngubane, who also oversees the Educational Support Programme:
"Ndabezinhle Crèche serves the people of Mbutshane which is a small place with a big need. It suffers with lots of poverty. Most of the teenagers have got children. Some of the children are orphans. Others grow up in in a bad space where they get lots of abuse by parents and relatives. I teach my pupils values of good life and all about God, discipline, caring and love. They develop skills, and are prepared for big school. If Ndabezinhle Crèche was not there, one 3 year old child would have stayed with only a dog all day, another only had a Granny who couldn't feed her; and another lives with an unemployed mother. Our Crèche provides all our children with breakfast and lunch."
Mbutshane is an area where 1/3 of the people are employed, 1/3 unemployed and 1/3 unemployable (according to government statistics). Parents really battle to pay Crèche fees, but are encouraged to contribute something. It costs about R250.00 per child per month to operate the Crèche, and we enrol between 20 and 30 children annually.
