The Blinkwater Trails, situated at the end of the Karkloof range, will be hosting a Trails Open Day on Saturday 15th October at Douglas Smith Cottage.
Whilst the trails have been in existence for over two decades, they have been affected by the Covid pandemic in recent years and several other challenges, leading to an extended period of inactivity.
The Blinkwater Trails Management team is now excited to announce an Open Day for all interested parties to come and walk the refreshed trails from Douglas Smith Cottage, up onto the Blinkwater Reserve grasslands and through the indigenous bush section, offering 5km and 12km walking options.
The 5km walk will be an out and back route from the cottage, taking in stops along the way to absorb some of the delights of this area with birding, butterfly and plant experts. It will be suitable for anyone with basic walking fitness and should take two to three hours.
The 12km walk is geared for the fitter walker, starting with a hefty climb up the Old Wagon Track from Douglas Smith Cottage and onto the grasslands, with spectacular three-sixty degree views across Albert Falls and the Karkloof, before taking a steep descent through the indigenous forest and back to the starting point. It is a rewarding loop with plenty to see along the way and is expected to take four to five hours to complete.
Douglas Smith Cottage is best accessed from New Hanover and is about a twenty-minute drive from there on district and forestry roads. Should the weather be inclement, the Open Day will be postponed to the following Saturday (22 October).
Bring your friends, your walking shoes, sunscreen and a picnic basket (to enjoy back at the cottage after the walk) and come and discover a hidden gem nestled in the Karkloof.
This event has been POSTPONED to 29 October due to rainfall predicted.

'And that’s a wrap as the curtains closed to a very packed theatre for our final performance of The Greatest Show last night. With Pickle’s Travelling Show being in town, the stage came to life with dancing fleas and cats, comical clowns, strong gladiators as Herbert Pickle and his family tried to keep the circus going in spite of being sabotaged by the evil Obadiah and Ratfink and his sleazy rats. Good always prevails and of course it all ended with a “happily ever after”.

Thuso Mbedu, internationally acclaimed South African Actress, born and bred in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, visited her hometown and province ahead of the premiere of The Woman King, in which she makes her film debut opposite lead actress Viola Davis.
KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission (KZNFC), Durban Film Office, eThekwini Municipality and Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (TKZN) partnered to host a true KZN homecoming for Mbedu, her co-star, British actor and producer, John Boyega and other cast members of the movie which will be released tomorrow (October 1) in South Africa.
The Women King, an upcoming American historical epic film, inspired by true events and the Agojie all female warrior unit which protected the West African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century. It was shot in South Africa and KZN particularly Jozini. Thuso stars as Nawi in film.
“This is an exciting moment when the daughter of KZN soil comes home to celebrate her achievements with the nation. As the Film Commission and our partners, we are thrilled to host our talent,” said KZNFC Acting CEO Victor Senna.
In a tightly packed two-day itinerary, the stars met with the heads of partner organisations, media, overnighted at Nambithi game reserve in Ladysmith, and Mbedu, Boyega thrilled learners of Pelham primary school, Mbedu’s primary school.
“This is a great partnership between provincial and local government to show the world that KZN is back in action. This was the perfect opportunity to showcase our province to a global audience and assure international filmmakers that KZN is the ideal tourism and film destination. The cast of this movie are much loved and celebrated stars in some of our key international markets like Nigeria, UK, and the USA, which makes this a perfect partnership,” concluded Senna.
The superstars attended the premiere screening of The Woman King at Gateway Theatre on Friday evening attended by over 400 invited guests.

When you hear the term “arthritis,” chances are you think of your grandma’s joint pain. But did you know that more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions exist? While people of all ages, races and sexes can live with arthritis, it’s prevalent among women and older people. Common arthritis symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness, and diminished range of motion in joints. Severe arthritis can even result in chronic pain and difficulty performing daily activities. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common types of this joint disease.

On 17 September 2022, the Laddsworth U9, U10, U11 and Open soccer girls took part in a soccer tournament held at Bisley Primary School. All the Laddsworth teams progressed to the final, with the U9 girls ending runners up, and the U10, U11 and Open Girls winning the tournament. A great way to end a fantastic season of soccer for the girls.
With results like those shown this season, and with events like the Laddsworth 5-a-side soccer tournament, it is safe to say that girls soccer is on fire in the Midlands and at Laddsworth Primary School.
We would also like to congratulate our 1st Team on their fantastic and near perfect season.

Hensie brings intelligence and humour to song writing and performance; and since lock down, also brings his son and daughter to join in on his musical journey of unexpected genres. He is a master on the classical guitar with vocal acrobatics, also featuring violin and concertina. He currently lives in Ladysmith, KZN with his musical family.

MiTH's own Charles Webster returns with a collection of Afrikaans classics from the likes of Laurika Rauch, Johannes Kerkorrel, Koos du Plessis and Lucas Maree. Charles is known for his deep baritone and gentle acoustic guitar work, and looks forward to sharing the Afrikaner half of his heritage with you.
