Pretoria teenager Lara van Niekerk continued her sensational form at the SA Short Course Championships on Saturday, storming to yet another SA and African record in the Pietermaritzburg pool.

The 19-year-old double Commonwealth Games gold medallist stormed to victory in the 50m breaststroke in 29.62 seconds to better the record she set at the same event a year ago. In doing so, she also secured another A qualification mark for the World Short Course Championships in Melbourne, Australia this December.

She may have gone faster than ever before, but Van Niekerk reckoned afterwards, it could have been even quicker.

“I definitely think I can go faster – especially coming back from such a big competition [like the Commonwealth Games], you are very tired,” she said after the race. “When I go back from the heats sessions, I literally just go and sleep… I’m dead because such a big competition takes so much out of you.

“I think my results could have been slightly better – if I had all that energy I had at Commonwealths so I think the future will have better times,” she added.

Meanwhile, also once again showing his class was 18-year-old Pieter Coetzé who dipped below the A qualifying mark on his way to victory in the 100m backstroke in 51.08. He also claimed the 50m freestyle title in 22.28, after edging ahead of Commonwealth Games teammate Clayton Jimmie (second in 22.32).

“I just wanted to get at least one qualifying time here so I was very happy to get that done and I’m excited to rest a little bit now ahead of the World Junior Championships,” said Coetzé, referring to his next major competition which will take place in Lima, Peru from 30 August to 4 September.

“It will be nice to get back to basics, train a little bit and get some schoolwork done – and then I’m excited for Peru. It will be a long flight and everything but I’m excited to see what I can do there,” he added.

Meanwhile, several other swimmers in Pietermaritzburg achieved B qualifying times, that will still put them in contention for selection for the World Short Course Championships later in the year.

Caitlin de Lange claimed the national 50m freestyle title in a time of 25.27. Her morning heat time of 31.47 in the 50m breaststroke was also a B qualifier, while she also previously achieved the required time in the 100m freestyle.

“It’s going better than expected,” admitted De Lange afterwards. “I just got back from racing in Ireland so I was really looking forward to coming and racing short course.”

Rebecca Meder claimed the 200m individual medley title in a B qualifying time of 2:10.38 with second-placed Tucker also dipping under the mark in 2:13.24.

Local teen Matt Sates then did the same in the men’s 200 IM, taking his sixth title of the Championships in a time of 1:55.98 while Stephanie Houtman claimed victory in the 400m freestyle in a B qualifying time of 4:14.19 with second-placed Catherine van Rensburg also achieving the qualifier in 4:15.19.

In recognition of what library spaces mean for the community, we are thrilled to have a workday planned for Friday the 12 August, at the Hilton Library, 8am.

Bring your work clothes and garden tools. Coffee, tea and a light snack will be provided.

What started out as a small garden clean-up for the library has grown into an exciting and positive initiative. With the generous help and contributions from Greg Downs from Hilton Quarry Spar and other businesses we are able to take care of some critical infrastructure maintenance in order to protect the building and gardens. On the arts and culture side, there are discussions about mural art for the Library and many more opportunities for Nancy’s outreach programmes.

The team at SES Hilton have installed an energy back-up system so that Nancy and her staff can continue to process books during power outages. Thank you to Kevin Palframan from Battery Centre for donating a battery.

Relishing being back on home turf, Pietermaritzburg teenager Matt Sates added two more national titles to the three he won a day earlier at the SA Short Course Swimming Championships on Friday.

 

The A qualification times required for the World Short Course Championships proved elusive on the day, but a total of six swimmers did achieve the B qualifying times in their respective races, meaning they’ll still be in line for selection for the team to represent South Africa at the global event in Melbourne, Australia this December.

 

Among them was Sates, who achieved the B qualifying marks in both the 200m freestyle and the 100m butterfly.

 

The 19-year-old claimed the 200m freestyle title in a time of 1:44.26 while Andrew Ross also dipped under the time, finishing second in 1:46.71.

 

Sates then achieved the B qualifier in the 100m butterfly after winning in a time of 51.90 and admitted afterwards he was still feeling the effects of his recent efforts at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

 

“It has been tiring. I’ve had lots of trips and lots of galas so it’s nice to be back home and it’s really nice to race short course again,” he said.

 

“I’m not really trying for times too much, I’m just trying to race each event as well as possible. I raced two races today and got two B qualifying times so I’m happy with that,” added Sates who will be looking for another title in the 200 individual medley on Saturday.

 

Also pleased with her efforts in Pietermaritzburg was Rebecca Meder, who recently celebrated her 20th birthday at the Commonwealth Games. The Durban star claimed the 100m butterfly title in a B qualifying time of 57.93.

 

“It’s going very, very well. Coming back from the Commonwealth Games it’s been racing and straight into racing which is tiring mentally more than physically. Mentally, you just have to think ‘ok, let’s do it again, let’s keep going,’” she said, also explaining she’s been recovering from a sinus infection.

 

As for her decision to drop the 400 individual medley to focus on the butterfly on Friday, Meder added: “I proved at Commonwealths that I’ve got some sprinting speed in me. In short course [in a 25m pool] my underwaters and turns are pretty strong so I thought let me go for the 100 fly and see what I can do there. I was just short of the A qualifying time, but it was a massive PB [personal best] for me so I think I definitely made the right decision.”

 

In Meder’s absence it was 17-year-old Dakota Tucker who powered to victory in the 400m individual medley, taking the title in a time of 4:38.16 – also a B qualifying time for the World Championships.

 

Others to achieve the same feat were fellow teenagers Pieter Coetzé and Ruard van Renen in the 50m backstroke – Coetzé taking the title in 23.80 (just five hundredths of a second off the A qualifying mark) with Van Renen second in 24.41.

 

SA Short Course swimming action continues on Saturday in Pietermaritzburg with the event coming to an end on Sunday, 14 August.

UIP stands for urban improvement precinct, but it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean “paving paradise to put up a parking lot”, as Joni Mitchell said. The vision for “Love Hilton” is to improve public space and to build on the numerous community initiatives that have been so successful.

“Love Hilton” is also about being representative of the community and creating places that cater to all age groups and demographics. There are many faces to Hilton, and “Love Hilton” represents an exciting opportunity for the people of Hilton to contribute positively to the space in which we live and work.

“Love Hilton” will ensure that all ratepayers contribute to the proposed improvements.

These improvements to Hilton will have significant economic spin-offs for the area, attracting investment and growing property values. UIPs have had a lot of success in other parts of South Africa, increasing safety and security, improving the environment, and fostering civic pride, to name a few benefits.

Despite the benefits, nothing is to be forced on the community. “Love Hilton” is about meeting community needs, and will not proceed without proven majority support for the plan.

It will take”Love Hilton” the next year to reach a point where we are able to submit the application to uMngeni . The thorough process will include:

Extensive communication with the community

A survey eliciting concerns and ideas from residents

Further consultation before developing a business plan and budget to be presented for approval in a referendum

Finalisation and presentation to uMngeni for adoption.

St Anne’s Diocesan College in Hilton recently hosted a once-off, quite extraordinary, collaborative artistic endeavour. The event was a musical concert with a difference. St Anne’s hosted the choirs of both Maritzburg College and Epworth High School for an evening filled with memorable choral performances.

The high point of the evening came in the final five minutes: a creative collaboration between the St Anne’s Visual Arts Department and the school’s 80-strong choir, featuring live painting on two massive canvases as a backdrop to the choral performance. The audience was spellbound.

The concept was the brainchild of music teacher Bryon-Mahieu van der Linde who said, “Although the concept seems simple, it is seldom explored. Analogous collaborations are usually only seen in big theatrical productions (music theatre or opera), but then artistic rendering is usually completed before the musical component is added. Certainly within the paradigm of South African amateur chamber music, no projects incorporating live painting and live choral singing have been publicised in recent years.”

Van der Linde said that while considering his choral repertoire for 2022, British singer-songwriter Imogen Heap’s Canvas played continuously in the back of his mind.

“The message communicated in the lyrics speaks to the multifaceted challenges facing the artist in manifesting art in various mediums. I penned some harmonies and created a three-part choral arrangement for the St Anne’s Choir.”

The theme around the painter who “just can’t find the strength to keep [the canvas] taut” perfectly captures the struggle of the entire artistic process; “birthing the idea of a collaboration with the visual arts department: live painting on a massive canvas during a choral performance,” he said.

He pitched his vision to Ayanda Siwila, Art Department head, and Monique van Deventer, visual arts teacher, who were both equally enthused.

“From initially foreseeing only a couple of art students participating, the department was inundated with interest from other girls. Students were encouraged to use their hands instead of brushes to paint empowering them in their creative genius, celebrating their femininity.” said Siwila. She added that the idea “explored the concept of visual art and music, and how the two forms can relay the beauty of sound and emotional communication through the cultural standards of rhythm, melody and harmony.”

For the performance of Canvas, 13 art students took to the stage alongside the St Anne’s Choir. The stage was flanked by two large canvases, with a group of students designated to each. Each student had equal contact time with the canvas over the 5 minute choral performance.

Siwila said, “Influenced by the 20th century artists Wassily Kandinksy and Jackson Pollock, the young artists completed the two action abstract paintings in five minutes while the choir’s angelic voices, the tones and sound of the rain instrument, complemented the composition of colour on the canvases.

“The artists were encouraged to listen attentively to the lyrics in order to articulate their expression. Although experimental, line and colour became important guiding elements, but they also had to pace themselves with the choir. Towards the end of the performance, they intensified their use of colour, mark-making and rhythm.”

She said that tape, which had been stuck on the canvases before the painting process, was removed, leaving intersecting, geometric lines.

“The idea of collaboration is highlighted by the tape lines representing the musical component and the expressive impasto technique representing the art. These conceptual artworks speak of how the two disciplines depend on, influence and interact with one another. Art and music aim to teach and thrill the heart and that evening we could actually hear music and colour.”

The outcome was a triumph, concurred Van der Linde, as choristers, art students and audience alike were treated to a singular artistic experience. The choir and instrumentalists verbally and musically communicated the intricacies of the artistic process, while the talented art students demonstrated it in real-time.

It was iconic Norwegian painter Edward Munch who said, “The colours live a remarkable life of their own after they have been applied to the canvas.”

The two vibrant, painted canvases will be mounted in the St Anne’s Music Centre, a reminder of the power of art to break norms, celebrate individual expression and bring the divergent artistic community together in novel and meaningful ways.

Being offered a chocolate from a mystery box can be exciting, until you choose the nougatine explosion, purveyor of fine shrapnel, that has you wondering, ‘fragment of nut, or remnants of filling?’

We’re bombarded with choices. Take for example the average grocery store visit – Do you want bite-sized, large, family-sized, gluten-free, sodium-free, organic, grain-fed, imported, artisanal, fair-trade, ethically-sourced, farm-fresh, sugar-free? Do you want to pay by debit card, cash, account, or credit card? And do you want a bag with that?

Enter “Choice Paralysis” from aisle 6. Choice paralysis is the feeling that we can’t deal with the simplest choices.

But what does this have to do with “Love Hilton”? Well, “Love Hilton” is all about choice. However, our focus is on meaningful choice that allows the community to curate a chocolate box with enough of the right chocolates to keep the majority of people happy.

Through consulting with property owners of Hilton, there will be opportunities for community members to indicate areas where “Love Hilton” should focus. We would like to try and keep this process as simple as possible so that people aren’t overwhelmed by intimidating surveys and lengthy questionnaires. We’ve looked at other UIPs around the country and they’ve highlighted:

Safety and Security
General Cleanliness and Tidiness
Maintenance and Development of Public Spaces
The Natural Environment and Green Issues
Attending to Social Issues

Keep an eye out on social media because we will be describing how we see these areas developing, but we also want to hear from you. Please get in touch to let us know how you would like to see “Love Hilton” develop, and if you think there are missing areas that need attention. Please note that these areas of interest are over and above what the municipality is responsible for, so things like electricity, potholes, etc. are not part of “Love Hilton”.

Celebrating women this August, SPAR KZN is excited to announce that an “in-person” 5km race will now take place in conjunction with the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge that is being hosted nationally on Saturday 3 September.

The Virtual Challenge was a compromise made due to the uncertainty of COVID regulations earlier in 2022, and as pandemic regulations have been removed, the organisers have added a physical event in KZN to make it a hybrid challenge. There are now three options to run the race: physically in Durban, virtually anywhere on a route selected by the entrant, or with any Park Run, which has partnered with the race.

The race organisers have designed a spectacular 5km route taking in the Durban beachfront and running on the famous promenade with the start and finish close to Suncoast. The run will get underway at 7am.

The usual race registration will take place between 10:00 and 18:00 on Thursday 1 September and Friday 2 September at Suncoast. Participants can collect their race packs and race numbers between 10am and 4pm. Entries combined between the Virtual and In-person events are limited to 10,000 athletes. Participants can still enter to run the Virtual Challenge on their own or with a Park Run, and to collect their race packs at participating stores in KZN.

Race Ambassadors, Raeesa Mahomed, Precious Mthembu, Lisa Bobbert, and Zinhle Ndawonde are training hard and will be out in full force with their family and friends on the day too. Participants can engage with them on the “SPAR KZN Womens 10 and 5km Race” on social media, where there are prizes to be won.

South African swimmers added three more medals to the team haul on the penultimate night of competition at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Tuesday.

Lara van Niekerk led the way by adding a second gold to her collection – this time in the 100m breaststroke.

The 19-year-old led from start to finish to claim victory over compatriot and Olympic silver medallist in the event, Tatjana Schoenmaker, in a personal best time of 1:05.47. Schoenmaker took the silver in 1:06.68 and Australian Chelsea Hodges the bronze in 1:07.05 with South Africa's other swimmer in the final, Kaylene Corbett, finishing seventh in 1:07.62.

“I just tried to swim with a comfortable stroke, so I felt really good on the first 50 and I knew Tatjana was going to come back at me in the second 50,” said Van Niekerk afterwards. “It’s always like that so I was just trying to keep going. I died a bit in the last 25 but the crowd kept me going and gave me extra adrenaline so it was a good race.”

Schoenmaker added: “It was obviously a very challenging race. My back end, I wasn’t as strong. I really did die as well. Lara really challenges me to push myself to go faster in the first 50.

“The times aren’t really there for me, but I still gave everything I could and it was the best performance I could have given tonight,” she added.

Later in the evening, 18-year-old Pieter Coetzé completed his collection of medals, adding a 200m backstroke bronze to the 100m gold and 50m backstroke silver he's already won in Birmingham. He swam a sensational final 50m to move from sixth place at the turn to secure the bronze in 1:56.77, with England’s Brodie Williams claiming gold in 1:56.40.

“I normally try to save a little bit for the last 50,” said Coetzé. “It’s been something that I’ve tried to change a little bit because sometimes I find myself a bit too far back or I leave it too late like I did tonight. But I think it was good. I don’t think I’ve ever come back that fast so to come that close to winning after turning sixth was great and I can’t complain about that at all.”

Two-time defending champion Chad le Clos was devasted to miss out on a medal in the 100m butterfly. He finished fourth in the race in 51.61 as Canadian Joshua Liendo Edwards took the gold in 51.24 and England’s James Guy and Australian Matt Temple shared the silver after both finishing in 51.40.

“I couldn’t have trained much harder for this, I tried my best. I thought that I would be better,” said Le Clos. “It’s still a good time for the last three years but I’m so devastated – you can actually not understand. It’s truly, truly devastating for me but it is what it is,” he added.

Elsewhere, Michael Houlie also just missed out on a podium spot in the 50m breaststroke. He flew off the blocks quickest but was just out-touched at the finish to end fourth in 27.36, with home favourite Adam Peaty making up for missing out on a medal in the 100m event by taking gold in 26.76.

“I knew I had a relatively decent start, and I was just swimming my race, looking forward. I glided a bit into the finish and I think that definitely cost me a medal,” said Houlie. “But we learn and so I’m going to take that and I’m even more motivated to get back to work and move on and move forward.”

Aimee Canny finished sixth in the 100m freestyle final in 54.88 with Michaela Pulford also taking sixth place in the 800m freestyle in 8:44.77.
“I went out a bit harder so I think I lacked the legs a little bit at the end, but I was happy just to go out hard, give it everything and there’s a lot to work on speed-wise but I was happy with that,” said Canny.

She later joined forced with Van Niekerk, Coetzé and Le Clos in the 4x100m mixed medley relay at the end of the night, but the quartet also just missed out, finishing fourth behind winners Australia in 3:44.38.

Meanwhile, Rebecca Meder progressed through her 50m backstroke semi-final, finishing fourth in 28.69 to book a spot in Wednesday’s final. Olivia Nel was fifth in the same race in 28.73 and just missed out on making it through.

“I’m really, really happy with that,” said Meder. “I’ve got a lane, I’ve got a chance and I’m just so privileged to be here. My goal coming in was just to make a 200 IM final and I’ve gone over and above that.”

Clayton Jimmie finished sixth in his 50m freestyle semifinal in 22.62 and did not progress to the final, but was nevertheless thrilled with his performance.

“I’m very happy. I couldn’t ask for a better swim. I swam a very good time this morning and I backed it up this evening with a PB,” he said. “I was trying to focus on the first 25 because I know if I get the first 25 right it’ll set me up for the rest of the race, so I’m happy.”
