We have projects that could include a gantry in Merrivale and at Prospect road. But we can not build a gantry if we can not keep it operating. UCSI is looking for pledges from the local suburb communities to maintain the monthly operating costs.

Hilton: A vehicle reported as stolen activated a camera which was loaded to the Response group and actioned. Thanks to AET security and Hilton SAPS a successful stop was made.

N3 Hidcote to Townhill A report of a stolen truck heading towards Pmb seen in Hidcote area. The community group was used to coordinate the team for a successful stop on Town hill. Well done to all involved. N3 Law enforcement, Hilton SAPS, AET and Magma.

07 July
Hilton; A vehicle reported as stolen, activated a camera was loaded to Response group and actioned. An AET member found and followed it towards Mpophomeni area. With assistance from Sompisi they managed to stop the vehicle. Mpophomeni SAPS assisted in getting vehicle impounded.

12 July
Howick Protest action: There are some vehicles possibly involved.

23 July
Hilton; A suspect stolen vehicle activated a camera and was loaded to the response group. This vehicle was been transported on a tow truck. An AET member contacted the company and received information that vehicle supposedly recovered and been returned. No further info. Vehicle not found in Hilton.

28 July
Merrivale; A suspected stolen vehicle was seen in cameras and loaded to group and actioned with a positive stop. Unfortunately this vehicle was incorrectly identified as possible suspect vehicle. This vehicle is legit and has been removed from the system.

30 July
Upper Dargle; Poaching incident, I loaded 2 vehicles that were found poaching in the Upper Dargle area.


UCSI would like to thank those community members that take time away from their families to go out into the chilly evenings to patrol the neighborhood. These Guys and Gals of the local CPFs are real Superheroes.

South African swimmers added a full complement of medals to Team South Africa’s collection at the Commonwealth in Birmingham on Sunday night.

Olympic champion and world record holder Tatjana Schoenmaker made sure the gold was never in doubt in the 200m breaststroke, the defending champion leading from start to finish to win in a time of 2:21.92.

Claiming the bronze medal in the same race was Schoenmaker’s Tuks teammate and friend Kaylene Corbett, who produced a great final 50m to finish in a time of 2:23.67, with Australia’s Jenna Strauch taking the silver in 2:23.65.

“It’s obviously amazing,” said a thrilled Schoenmaker afterwards. “Four years ago Kaylene was standing in the crowd and she’s always crying for me so for me it was the happiest moment. I really didn’t care what my result was – I was so happy for her to win her first international medal and then the blessing is to share that podium. We’re so proud to wear the green and gold but being able to sing that anthem together, we just felt united with our country in that moment,” she added.

An equally emotional Corbett said: “We’ve fought for women’s sport since 2016 when none of the South African girls made the Olympic team but we’ll keep fighting until we’re done swimming so this is definitely a step in the right direction having two girls on the podium in comparison to 2018 when she was on the podium and I was crying in the stands so I must say, it’s nice to cry on the podium than next to the pool.”

Also making a trip to the podium was Chad le Clos, who was looking to make it four consecutive golds in the 200m butterfly at the Commonwealth Games but was just out-touched by New Zealand’s Lewis Clareburt – Le Clos taking silver in 1:55.89 and Clareburt the gold in 1:55.60.

“I’m gutted not to have won, I’ll be honest with you,” said Le Clos, who won his Olympic gold in the same event exactly 10 years ago to the day. “I was stinging in the last 50m. But fair play to Lewis, he broke the national record this morning and again tonight – he had a great race. It is what it is.

“I’ll take the medal for sure, but I wanted the gold. That’s what I was planning on coming to do.”

In winning the silver Le Clos nevertheless equalled the record for the most medals won by any athlete in Commonwealth Games history – taking his overall haul to 18.
In the other finals of the evening, Emma Chelius finished just out of the medals in fourth (24.78) and Erin Gallagher eighth (25.39) in the 50m freestyle.

“It was an incredible experience, I loved having Erin in the lane right next to me… It’s a season’s best so I’m really happy with that. I’m just so grateful to have had that experience and I’m definitely going to keep learning and building on it every time I race so I can put it into practice for future races,” said Chelius.

Rebecca Meder celebrated her 20th birthday with a seventh-place finish in the 100m backstroke in 1:02.06.

“I think I was ranked 15th so to finish seventh is amazing… it’s been a great night of racing for South Africa as a whole,” she said.

“That was my first big senior international final, so I enjoyed every moment and soaked it all up and I’m so excited for tomorrow.”

Brenden Crawford finished eighth in the men’s 100m breaststroke final in 1:01.98, while Christian Sadie finished fifth in the SB8 100m breaststroke in 1:22.14.

“It was good. It’s not the race I’m focusing on – tomorrow’s the big one but it was really nice being here racing, the crowd was amazing and it’s been a privilege to be able to go out twice which not many of the Para athletes get to do so I’m really honoured to be here.”

Having already collected gold in the 100m backstroke on Saturday, teenager Pieter Coetzé continued his winning form in the semifinal of the 50m backstroke. He won in 24.81 to go through to Monday’s final as the fastest qualifier.

“It’s amazing, I’m very happy with that. Last night was a late night – the sessions are quite late in the evening so I’m glad to get it done now so I can go and rest. And today I just wanted to make the final, so job done.”

Also making her way safely through the semifinals was Gallagher who powered to a national record time of 26.17 in the 50m butterfly to finish second in her semi to qualify second fastest for Monday’s final.

“I think I was quite relaxed and that always helps. I was just very excited to race and I think that’s something that I’ve lost over the years so I’m slowly getting it back,” said Gallagher afterwards. “I think my goal for tomorrow is just to have fun and if I break 26 seconds, that would be a cherry on top but I’m so excited to be racing again and we’ll see what happens in the final.”

Gallagher was back in the pool for the 4x200m freestyle relay final with Team SA teammates Aimee Canny, Dune Coetzee and Michaela Pulford, who finished in fourth place in 8:02.25. The race was won in world record time by Australia in a sensationally quick 7:39.29.

Gandalf famously said to Frodo, "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door..." Comfort is easy, change is difficult. But change is growth – let's grow Love Hilton together.

Change doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It takes constant engagement, persistence, and dedication. It’s easy to get into the habit of going for a good old “dopamoan” kick, but sometimes it’s about getting things done. No matter how long it takes, and how much bureaucracy you face along the way. We believe in citizen action and engagement, and the numerous community initiatives in Hilton that have popped up like the elusive Hilton daisy, are testament to the levels of civic pride and love.

It is several years since the HRA committee resolved to pursue the possibility of establishing a UIP (sometimes referred to as a Special Rating Area) for Hilton. Although draft by-laws and policy were submitted to uMngeni early in 2020, no progress was made with their adoption. However, following the election of a new Council, the position has now changed.

There is support for UIPs within the current Council, and provision has been made for them in the new uMngeni Rates Policy.

We have recently agreed that the Hilton UIP will be branded "Love Hilton", a name which encapsulates a community collaborating to care for and improve our small town.

What is a UIP?

The establishment of UIPs within municipalities is provided for in legislation.
These exist widely in South Africa and internationally.
UIPs allow property owners, within a designated area, the opportunity to establish priorities and invest in the management of their area.
UIPs work closely with the municipalities, do not take over responsibilities of the municipality, and are not break-aways.
UIPs are funded by property owners agreeing to pay a small extra amount with their rates. This is collected by the municipality and transferred immediately to the Section 21 (Not for Profit) company established to manage the UIP.

The UIP Management Plan must be fully negotiated with the property owners, and approved through a referendum.

SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge

Durban Girls’ College claim their fourth Grand Finals win

After seven years, Durban Girls’ College reclaimed the title of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge at the tenth Grand Finals where they met host school, St Mary’s D.S.G. in the conclusion of the tournament.

In the recent Grand Finals, St Mary’s have dominated with four consecutive wins. The only team in the tournament to have a 100% record at the all-important weekend, Durban Girls’ College have met St Mary’s in the main game three times and in their third clash, managed to release the host school’s firm hold. In the history of the tournament, St Mary’s have hoisted the trophy five times, and with College’s latest victory, they now have four spectacular wins.

The game got off to a quiet start as both teams took some time to settle the nerves. Building momentum, the pace intensified as they determinedly attacked on either end but were unable to break through the sterling last line of defence after some great runs and quick, precise passes.

In the 30 minutes of running play, both teams earned one short corner each, as well as a couple of long corners. With time running low, St Mary’s managed two great runs down the side lines, causing Durban Girls’ College’s defenders to scramble at the back but the exciting breaks didn’t amount to any goals. As the final whistle blew, the gold silver game had no scores being recorded, meaning six players would head to the circle for the deciding penalty shootout.

Amy van Rooyen from Saints got proceedings underway but her fine attempt frustratingly hit the upright. Next up, Emily Macquet netted the first goal for College. Levelling up the scoreline, Georgie Pollock got St Mary’s first in the second round. Edging her team one goal up, Tara Pakendorf knocked in the second for College. All pressure fell on Elizabeth Anderson from St Mary’s who fired off a fantastic shot but desperately watched as it shaved the upright, going just wide of the goals, resulting in victory for Durban Girls’ College.

The bronze medal game was a Pietermaritzburg derby, where St John’s D.S.G. met rivals St Anne’s College. St Anne’s netted the first goal in the first minute, but St John’s stepped up a gear and fired in three well-crafted goals in response, giving them their best result in their two appearances at the Grand Finals, their first podium position.

Over the history of the tournament that started in 2011, 935 teams from around KwaZulu Natal have participated in 110 regional tournaments. 16,380 girls have taken to the turf in the ten annual regionals, with a total of 2,010 matches being played.

The bronze medal game was a Pietermaritzburg derby, where St John’s met rivals St Anne’s College. This is the ninth appearance at the Grand Finals for St Anne’s College, and they have featured in the medal games every year with a variety of podium finishes over the years. This is the second fourth place. For St John’s, this is their best result with their first podium finish in their two runs at the finals. In their 2017 appearance, they met St Anne’s where the roles were reversed, with St Anne’s finishing third and St John’s fourth overall.

In Lasse Hallström’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Gilbert Grape unleashes some of the best prose on small-town living I’ve ever heard. Remove the sparse cinematography and the iconic soundtrack, and it’s still “poetry in montage”.

Grape begins slowly, ‘Endora. Endora's where we are. Describing Endora is like dancing to no music. It's a town where nothing much ever happens… and nothing much ever will.’

In my jaded early adulthood, I used to describe Hilton as a type of Endora. While listening to Gilbert’s slightly defeatest monotone voiceover, I’d compare snapshots of the centre of small town Endora, as if viewing slides of the past through one of those old-school carousels.

I saw Hilton as a place that epitomises dancing to no music. A place to just pass through, or else you’re left behind. And yet weirdly, I always found myself coming back, unable to shed that word “home”. And now it’s not just about being home, it’s about reimagining a space through writing, art, and storytelling. They say you should always write what you know. But it’s more than what I know, it’s about what more is coming, the energy and the vision and the people who are creating the music to dance to.

When I moved back to Hilton in 2020, during hard lockdown, I was convinced I’d be heading back to my life in Cape Town in a matter of months. But I couldn’t leave. During this time I found myself being haunted by ghosts of the past, needing to tell stories of old places and old spaces. Having a profoundly deep connection to Hilton’s streets, buildings, the people who occupied them, and seeing the blurred outlines of village folklore take shape in my mind. Forming words on a page.

It’s a year since the civil unrest, and I think in many ways that catalysed the groundswell of community that was already fizzing and bubbling. Local heroes in a range of different forms came out and showed up, and more and more people joined in. I saw what was going on around me, and I was going bonkers at home imagining worst case scenarios, so I volunteered to pack and deliver medicine for my hero pharmacist friend, “Dr. Quinn” (medicine woman). It felt like a drop in a very big ocean, which is why I’m now compelled to join committees like a woman possessed. The trouble is I have a big mouth, and I’ve been bleating on about people in the “moan zone” getting their “dopamoan” kicks. I realised it’s high time I use my big mouth to Love Hilton.

So I joined the Love Hilton Steering Committee, because I’ve learned that we’re better when we get involved in stories. Whether we’re verbs and do cool sh*t, or adjectives to make simplicity extraordinary, or nouns to stand in and add value. Or simply, a comma or full stop to offer people a breath when they need it.

In Hilton, initiatives are popping up like daisies. The “original gangster” Kate Warr did truly remarkable things by starting the HBI and transforming numerous green spaces. She gave the reins to Cilla Hillcove, under the banner “Love Hilton”, and Cilla has been single-handedly managing this initiative. The Hilton Train Station has been completely revived with a new and exciting energy thanks to the late Lynton Hall, Neil Riekert, and Grant Fryer. Hilton is also safer, thanks to The Hilton Community Security Initiative, a project of the Hilton Community Police Forum. This forum also led to the highly successful Hilton Buddies program, which connects and assists the elderly, run by Deidre Rautenbach. And recently BOOMTOWN, the “love child” of Jono Hornby and myself, was born. BOOMTOWN saw nine artists come together to paint public space for a week, and inject Hilton with colour. BOOMTOWN is an ongoing initiative to celebrate public art and inclusivity, and people are visiting Hilton to see it, not just to pass through.

These are just a few of the initiatives on the go, and the trouble with having so many is that it can be confusing, and perhaps overwhelming, because there’s a lot to support. This is why the Hilton Ratepayers Association is looking at becoming conductors for all of the instruments at play.

“As the community of Hilton we are about to be presented, through the developing Love Hilton initiative, with a wonderful opportunity to work together in shaping the future of our town.” said Ian McMillan, Chairman of Love Hilton Steering Committee.

The wheels are in motion to turn Hilton into a “Special Rating Area” or an “Urban Improvement Precinct”, called Love Hilton. The new iteration of Love Hilton is inspired by Kate Warr’s Love Hilton Project, and the surrounding community initiatives taking off – Love Howick, Love Notties, and Love Mpophomeni. Love Hilton exemplifies our collective love for this small town, and creating a UIP offers a neat umbrella opportunity for a broad range of community initiatives to have long-term sustainability and ongoing support. The proposed designations for Love Hilton include security, maintenance and tidiness, amenities, social issues, and the environment.

Hilton is so much of my story, and it’s a place that courses through my blood. The echoes of my awkward childhood footsteps down the Hilton Hotel passages where I grew up, to these new bolder steps where memory and moment collide. Where I’m learning to dance, even if there’s no music. Because, if there’s one thing we’ve learned through our collective stories, is that it only takes a few people to start dancing to create a movement, and it’s up to us to make the music. To Dance. To Love Hilton.

Formerly an English teacher, Bridget currently works as a writer of English textbooks for South African schools, and writes novels between textbook commissions. KIM WARD lives in Hilton, but tries to get away to the Drakensberg mountains as often as possible to hike and camp with her husband. When she is home, she looks after her two sons and two sausage dogs and is a proofreader and editor. She received her English Honours at UKZN, her Masters in Environmental Education from Rhodes University, and worked for WESSA as the Eco-Schools co-ordinator for 10 years. 9pm: Who Wants To Live Forever

The team that brought you the richly textured Tom Waits 70's retrospective "Heart of Saturday Night" in '21 are back with their next big music show, "Who Wants to Live Forever".

Music raconteur Rob Boyd leads off with his "tragic young rock stars never die; they live forever" theme, backed up with a powerhouse band comprising Brian Bedingfield, Gareth Barry, Roly Struckmeyer, Paddy Austin and Mark Butler with Kath McClelland on raw and raunchy Joplinesque vocals.

Expect more stunning dancing from dynamic duo Nadja Bartel and Bonwa Mbontsi, and grande dame Dee Bedingfield in a divine character cameo. With script by Rob Boyd, and Paul Spence on show direction, this MiTH headline on July 27th is a tantalizing, mouth-watering taster of the fantastic rock show comin' down the pipeline.

8pm: Erin Fourie and Alan Strang

Erin Fourie returns to the MiTH stage, joined by special guest Alan Strang in the later half of the set.

Erin has been on the Midlands music circuit for almost 20 years and regularly performs around Hilton and Howick in her acoustic folk style which has been likened to Joan Baez, among others. She has performed in numerous cabarets at the Hexagon Dive, was a top 10 SA Idols contestant and even managed to snag a role in The Sound of Music at the Durban Playhouse. In recent years she has collaborated with several local musicians on various projects and is delighted to showcase her current work with Alan Strang.

 

Alan has had a strong interest in music throughout his life, particularly in the areas of Scottish and Irish traditional music and folk music. A self-described “late starter” on the music scene, he became actively involved in the Buskers & TJs Acoustic Music clubs in Johannesburg. Principally a singer, Alan also plays guitar and enjoys creating harmonies with other musicians. In collaborations such as Almost Harmonic and PentUp, he performed at music festivals in the 90s, including Splashy Fen, Four Winds in PE, and Barleycorn in Cape Town. He has recorded and performed often with the Waldorf String Band, latterly becoming a regular member of the band.

7pm: Rosie Whitfield

Rosie is a 26 year old singer, songwriter, and pianist, born and raised in the Midlands of Kwa-Zulu Natal. She began piano at the age of 7 and has been composing her own pieces since the age of 12. She identifies as a contemporary folk artist whose work has been influenced by artists like Nora Jones, and Celtic Women. She also enjoys putting music to poems like Robert Frost's "Stopping by woods on a snowy evening".

South Africa's swimmers added three more medals to the rapidly increasing Team SA haul at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Monday.

Pieter Coetzé claimed his second medal of the Games, adding the 50m backstroke silver to his 100m backstroke gold, while Erin Gallagher claimed silver in the 50m butterfly and Para-swimmer Christian Sadie bronze in the S7 50m freestyle.

The biggest smile of the night belonged to Gallagher who outgunned Olympic 100m butterfly champion Maggie MacNeil to earn joint silver with Australia’s Holly Barratt in a new national record time of 26.05. Australian Emma McKeon took the gold in 25.90.

“I could not be happier with that swim,” said a thrilled Gallagher afterwards. “I think the last few metres my eyes were closed. I can’t even remember the race to be honest. I put my head down and hoped for the best and I took a while to turn around and look at the time because I was nervous but when I saw the two there, I couldn’t believe it. I was so shocked.”

Coetzé was not quite as happy with his silver, after being out-touched by New Zealand’s Andrew Jeffcoat in the 50m backstroke. The Kiwi took the gold in 24.65 with Coetzé just .12 of a second behind.

“I’m a little bit disappointed but I’m still happy to get the medal and it’s always fun to race – especially with the crowd and everything.

“It was very close, it would have been nice to get the touch but that happens.”

While Sadie wasn’t particularly happy with his S7 50m freestyle race, he was please to claim a medal at his second consecutive Games after taking silver four years ago. It was Australia’s Matt Levy who claimed gold in 28.95, Singapore’s Wei Soong Toh the silver in 29.10, while Sadie finished in 29.78.

“I’m really chuffed to be on the podium. It was really nice racing with the guys. I think it’s the same podium as last time. The swim wasn’t as great as I wanted it to be but I’m happy,” he said afterwards.

Rebecca Meder was thrilled with her fourth place in the 200m individual medley in a new national record time of 2:12.01, taking over half a second off the previous mark which belonged to Kathryn Meaklim and had stood since 2009.

“I didn’t really think about the record while I was racing, I just swam my own race,” said Meder, who turned 20 on Sunday. “A bronze would have been amazing, but I came in ranked 10th or 11th and I just finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games. I’m so happy with that time.”

Meanwhile, earlier in the evening, Chad le Clos looked in fine form as he won his 100m butterfly semifinal in 51.64 to progress to Tuesday's final
second quickest.

“I’m over the moon, I’ve got a great lane draw, right next to the fastest guy Matt [Temple] – he’s going to be a big threat tomorrow night… Another medal would be great, but you know what I want,” he said referring to the gold medal.

Also safely through to his final was Michael Houlie who had to come from a way back to finish second in his 50m breaststroke semifinal and make his way through third fastest with a time of 27.39.

“It was fun. After this morning’s swim where I executed my race plan and strategy really well, I just tried to cut out everything, social media and stayed off my phone and stay relaxed and keep my mind calm so I was ready to get the job done which was to get in the final and get a good lane,” he said afterwards.

Tatjana Schoenmaker was back in the pool following her gold medal-winning performance in the 200m breaststroke - this time in the 100m event. She won her semifinal in 1:06.43 while compatriot and 200m breaststroke bronze medallist Kaylene Corbett finished fourth in 1:07.96 to also progress to the final.

“I just enjoyed myself out there tonight… It’s not the fastest time but I was very happy,” said Schoenmaker.

Meanwhile, it was teammate Lara van Niekerk who recorded the fastest time of the night, easily winning the other semifinal in 1:05.96, making sure there will once again be three South Africans in a breaststroke final at these Games.

“It’s only the second time I’ve gone 1:05 so I’m super-happy about that… I felt really comfortable. I have the morning off tomorrow so hopefully I can shave a bit more time off in the final,” she said.

Aimee Canny was the other South African to progress to her final. She finished third in her 100m freestyle semifinal in 54.78 to qualify sixth quickest.

“I did what I needed to do. I’m in the final and it’s on my PB so I’m very happy with that,” she said. “The first 25 I worked harder than I did this morning and then I tried to ease off a little bit so I had the legs in the last 25 so I was very happy.”

The final event of the evening saw the South African 4x200m freestyle relay team of Matt Sates, Le Clos, Andrew Ross and Coetzé finishing sixth in 7:13.76.

Teen swimming sensations Lara van Niekerk and Pieter Coetzé led the medal charge on the second night of swimming at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Saturday.

Van Niekerk claimed Team South Africa’s first medal of the Games by powering to gold in the 50m breaststroke final which featured three South African swimmers.

She claimed the victory in another Commonwealth Games record time of 29.73 seconds. Tatjana Schoenmaker finished fourth in 30.41 and Kaylene Corbett sixth in 31.10.

“It felt amazing, the crowd was going wild, so I knew it was going to be close. But I was just happy that I could swim the second fastest time I’ve ever done and to win a medal is a bonus so I’m super-happy,” said the beaming 19-year-old afterwards.

Olympic champion Schoenmaker, whose focus will be on her main 100 and 200m breaststroke events, was thrilled for her teammate to claim the first medal of the Games for the country.

“It’s amazing – we’re always supporting women so it’s great to have a woman grab the first one. We can just be so proud of them. Being the senior now in the group it’s nice to see the juniors come up and take the win,” she said after the race.

Later in the evening, Coetzé outgunned the field in the 100m backstroke final, speeding to gold in 53.78 seconds.

“It was definitely a bit closer than I expected and I was definitely expecting to go a bit faster than the semi but my coach told me it’s not about times at all, it’s just about getting the win. It’s my first international medal and it’s amazing to get a gold,” said Coetzé.

Elsewhere, Matt States finished sixth in the 200m freestyle final in 1:47.75 and followed that up with fourth in the 400m individual medley in 4:16.61.

“I was so tired – especially swimming the 200 and 400 heats this morning as well but next time I’ll probably be more specific and choose between them,” said Sates, who still have the 200IM, 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle to come.

Four other South Africans booked places in their respective finals.

Emma Chelius and Erin Gallagher progressed to the final of the 50m freestyle. Chelius was third in her semifinal in 24.94 to qualify fifth fastest while Gallagher was fourth in her semi in 25.31 to go through as seventh quickest. Olivia Nel just missed out after finishing fifth in the same semifinal in 25.38.

“I’m really proud of all our South African girls. It was really nice to have all three of us through to semis,” said Chelius.

“I was very happy to dip under that 25-second mark and hopefully I’ll go faster tomorrow night.”

Also making her way through was Rebecca Meder, who finished fourth in her 100m backstroke semifinal in a personal best time of 1:01.71.

“I’m very happy. Coming in I was only ranked about 15th so it’s a big PB for me and I’m hoping that tomorrow on my birthday I get a PB again,” she said.

“With sprinting there are so many things you can work on to try and drop a split so if I can drop.3 or .4 tomorrow I will be over the moon. I’m just stoked to be in the final to be honest.”

The other South African to progress was Brenden Crawford in the 100m breaststroke after finishing fourth in his semfinal in 1:0064. Just missing out was Michael Houlie, who finished fifth in the same race in 1:01.24.

“The 50 was my main focus coming into this competition and I think the 100 was more preparation for Paris [2024] and I feel like I’m learning every time. It’s all practice towards that,” said Houlie afterwards.

Alani Ferreira (30.89) and Cornelle Leach (31.34) finished seventh and eighth respectively in the women’s 50m freestyle S13 final – the only event on offer for visually impaired swimmers.

Ferreira explained before the event that it was not a distance she would normally compete in but said: “It was actually a lot of fun. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I got to push myself in ways that I normally don’t so a bit of a change was nice.”

Leach added: “It was a good race. I did better in training this morning so it’s just the nerves that got to me but at the end of the day we’re here, we swam it, we got to represent out country so those are all wins.”

The men’s and women’s 4x100m freestyle relays ended off the nights action with the SA quartet of Aimee Canny, Chelius, Nel and Gallagher finishing fourth in the women’s race in 3:40.31 and the team of Guy Brooks, Clayton Jimmie, Andrew Ross and Brenden Crawford finishing sixth in the men’s race in 3:23.41.

Four South African swimmers booked their places in their respective Commonwealth Games finals on the first evening of swimming at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Birmingham, three of them in the same race.

 

Lara van Niekerk was again in sensational form as she dived in for the semifinal of the 50m breaststroke. Having set a new Commonwealth Games record of 29.82 in the morning heats, the 19-year-old went even quicker in the evening, winning in a time of 29.80.

 

“I’m happy. Just breaking the Games record twice in a day is a big achievement so hopefully tomorrow night in the final I can maybe swim a PB. It would be amazing,” she said referring to the African record of 29.72 she set at the National Championships earlier this year.

 

“It’s also great to have that amazing group of girls with me in the final. It’s definitely going to calm the nerves knowing that they are there with me and I’m not all on my own.”

 

In the same 50m breaststroke semifinal, fellow South African Kaylene Corbett, whose focus is very much on the 200m breaststroke event, also qualified for the final, finishing fourth in 31.43.

 

Just a race earlier Olympic 200m breaststroke champion Tatjana Schoenmaker finished second in her semifinal in 30.94 to make it three South Africans in the final.

 

“It’s very strange for me and Kaylene because this is not our event at all, so I think she’s going to be super-happy because she’s never got this far in a 50. Somehow I was just very lucky.

My speed isn’t there yet but hopefully it’s because the 200 will be a bit better,” said Schoenmaker afterwards.

 

Corbett added: “It’s definitely humungous for me, because I’ve never been in a 50 final. I’ve never excelled in anything except 100 and 200 – well, 200 mostly. So it is emotional and very exciting – and having three girls in the final is just incredible.”

 

Also showing some impressive speed was young Pieter Coetzé who was the only swimmer to dip under the 54-second mark in the 100m backstroke semifinals. He reached the wall in 53.67 to cruise through to the final.

 

“It was nice to have a semifinal before me so I could see what we needed for the final and save a little bit,” he said afterwards. Asked if there’s still more in the tank, the 18-year-old added:

“I believe so – I don’t want to call it, but I hope so.”

 

Earlier in the evening, Matt Sates finished seventh in the 400m freestyle final, touching in a time of 3:50.07 while the Australians claimed a clean sweep of the first medals on offer in the pool with Elijah Winnington taking gold in 3:43.06, Sam Short the silver (3:45.07) and Mack Horton the bronze (3:46.49).

 

“It wasn’t too great. But we just move on and go again tomorrow. I’ve got the 400 IM and the 200 freestyle so we’ll have to see how tomorrow goes,” said Sates afterwards.

 

Other South Africans in action on Friday night were Chad le Clos and Clayton Jimmie, who missed out on reaching the 50m butterfly final.

 

Le Clos finished fifth in his semifinal in 23.67.

 

“That was close, but I said it was going to be like that. I’m happy though. A final would have been great but generally I’m not too concerned about the 50. It’s one of my better times I’ve done so I’m happy and I’m feeling good.”

 

Jimmie finished seventh in the same semifinal and was thrilled with his time of 24.09.

 

“It was amazing. I swam my all-time best time and I’m very pleased with my swim. My preparation was very good so I was hoping to go below 24 seconds – that would have been great – but I’m happy with my performance,” said Jimmie, who will also compete in the 50m freestyle and the relays.

 

Erin Gallagher, Dune Coetzee and Trinity Hearne missed out on the 100m butterfly final. Gallagher finished fourth in her semi in 59.02 while Coetzee was eighth in the same race in 1:00.51 and Hearne finished eighth in her semi in 1:00.60.

 

“I really expected to be better but it’s the first day and I still have a lot of races to go so I can take what I learnt from this race and use it for my races to come,” said Gallagher.
Coetzee wasn’t too pleased with her result but her focus remains elsewhere. “I wasn’t too happy with the race… I haven’t been swimming a lot of butterfly because I had a little shoulder injury,” she said.

 

“I’ve been focusing more on my freestyle so I’m surprised that I even made the semifinals. I just tried to take in the experience and have some fun with it,” added Coetzee, who will swim the 400m freestyle and lead off the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay.

 

Competing at her first Commonwealth Games, 18-year-old Hearne was thrilled to have reached the semifinal.

 

“I was definitely a bit nervous going in because it’s my first Commonwealths and first semi so I just tried to enjoy the experience and focus on my own race, so I was pretty happy with how I went,” she said. “It was definitely a big shock to make the semis because I didn’t expect it at all.”

 

Swimming action continues at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Birmingham on Saturday morning.

We have put together some guidelines for you to prepare your beds and for planting the roots, to have the best possible chance at successfully growing your peonies.

Planting & Growing Peonies

Conditions
• Peonies do best where the winters are long & cold. They can handle negative winter temperatures, snow or frost and will survive if temperatures get between 2'C and 5'C for 30-60 days in the winter.
• Peonies do best in morning sun and should be planted so they are in the shade for the afternoon.
• Peonies don't like to be disturbed and although they can be grown in pots they do best in-ground.

Preparing your beds
• Dig over the soil to a depth of 60 cm and remove any clods - generously add some good quality compost and a few handfuls of bone meal.
• Turn in the compost and bone meal making sure the soil is loose and fine. If your soil is heavy clay some sand or perlite can be added to improve drainage.
• If you have acidic or alkaline soils, a good application of lime is recommended to bring the soil to a neutral pH.
• Planting is best done in autumn and winter months once the eyes have formed on the roots and the green foliage has died back.

Planting peony roots
• Roots should be planted 1-2 days after collection to prevent them from drying out. If you are unable to plant them right away, keep them in a box or some newspaper away from direct light.
• Submerge roots in water for 20 minutes to 1 hour before planting.
• Peony roots should be planted in well drained loamy/sandy soil. A neutral pH of 6.7 is best.
• Avoid planting them near trees & shrubs where they will need to compete for food, provide about half a meter either side of the roots.
• Remove your roots from the water and place them in the holes - the eyes should be about 4 cm (two horizontal fingers) below the soil level - don't plant them too deep as they won't flower well if you do. Planting too deep is the biggest mistake that can be made.
• Cover the roots and press down around the root lightly ensuring the root is firmly planted.
• Finally add some mulch (straw / leaves) around the roots to help shelter and protect them as they begin to grow.
• We recommend an application of fungicide straight after planting and again 4 weeks later. This will reduce the risk of fungus and root rot while the roots establish. You can use Funginex or similar systemic fungicide.

Watering & fertilising
• Although peony plants are hardy, they are "English Garden" type plants. Water 2-3 times a week in spring & summer to ensure good flowering (1-2 liters per plant). Peonies can be fertilised with 2-3-4 in spring and again after they have flowered. They don't like to have wet feet, so be sure not to over water. If you see black spots on the leaves, a systemic fungicide should be applied as soon as possible.

Turning your home into a smart home is no longer a futuristic idea – the smart home market is growing rapidly all over the world. In South Africa homeowners are moving quickly towards installing cutting-edge technology to make their lives easier, healthier and more energy efficient.

Once expensive and out of reach for the everyday homeowner, smart home products have become more accessible, cost-effective, and user-friendly.

The definition of smart homes has also evolved to not only include voice-controlled, automated houses. There are many simple, efficient, and easy-to-use appliances that make your home smarter, more secure, and more comfortable, says Trevor Brewer, director of leading lifestyle technology manufacturers and importers, Solenco.

“Homeowners can start with smaller, less expensive items to turn their homes into smarter, easier and healthier places to live. These items not only save money in the long run, they also look after the overall health and wellbeing of homeowners,” says Brewer.

Here’s how to start on your smart home technology journey:

• Smart light bulbs – there are LED bulbs on the market that allow you to run them from your smartphone. LED bulbs are better for the environment, safer, and they save money. LEDs emit almost no forward heat while traditional bulbs convert more than 90% of the total energy used to power them directly into heat. Additionally, because LEDs consume less power, they can operate effectively on low-voltage electrical systems.
• Robotic vacuums – besides the obvious benefit of not having to break your back by vacuuming, advanced robot vacuums allow you to clean your house when you are not at home and they are easily managed through a smartphone app. Brewer says when purchasing a robot vacuum, take into consideration room size, mapping and mopping technology, type of surface to be cleaned, battery life, noise level and scheduling. “In our increasingly busy lives where our homes are often our offices, having a discreet, permanent appliance cleaning up after kids, animals and spills is necessary to maintain peace and order when the day is done,” says Brewer.
• Air purifiers – these devices tackle the threats that we can’t necessarily see but that we breathe on a daily basis – an element of health that simply can’t be ignored following a global pandemic and a frequent poor air quality index in cities like Johannesburg. “There are several different types of air purifiers that use filtration mechanisms to remove toxins and airborne viruses from the air,” says Brewer. “Look out for those that are medical grade and offer multi-stage filtration to capture the smallest of airborne particles from pollution, allergens and viruses to pollen, dust, smoke, and pet dander.”
• A smart alarm system – this allows you to be in control of your home’s security. Your alarm can be enabled and disabled remotely, meaning you don’t have to be in your home to set your alarm. There are many smart alarm systems that can be configured from a tablet or smartphone. These alarms can also be connected to home appliances that can also be controlled remotely, as well as CCTV cameras that monitor the inside and outside of the home. Smart alarms are a clever way of protecting your property and allows you to be in control of your own security system wherever you are.
• Keyless entry – never worry about losing your keys again. Keyless locks can be used with a variety of devices and will provide you with smart security for your keyless home, while enhancing its aesthetics. You can access the lock from anywhere, control it with voice, use it with different devices, and enable automation. You can see who came, went, at what time, and send your digital keys to your family and friends quickly if they need to get into your home. With no physical key to lose, steal or duplicate, keyless entry systems lower your security risk.

A team of 20 swimmers will lead the medal charge as they head to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games which begin on Thursday, 28 July.

Spearheading the challenge will be Olympic gold and silver medallist and world record-holder Tatjana Schoenmaker, who will be looking to defend both her 100m and 200m breaststroke titles in Birmingham, and the man who already has an incredible 17 medals from three Commonwealth Games so far, Chad le Clos.

Le Clos is looking to break the record for the most medals won by a single athlete in Commonwealth Games history – with just one more medal needed to tie the record with shooters Phillip Adams and Mick Gault and two needed to break it.

At the last Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia in 2018, swimming was the sport that produced the most gold medals for Team South Africa with six. They also added three silvers and three bronzes to the overall South African haul.

Le Clos claimed three golds and a silver as well as a bronze in the 4x100m medley relay while Schoenmaker walked away with two golds.

Le Clos withdrew from the World Championships in Budapest recently with breathing problems but maintains he’s back on track.

“It took me a while to get back but I’ve been working hard in my training,” he said from his base in Plymouth in the UK. “I’ve really taken this year very seriously, I’ve been working on a lot of different aspects of my game in order to get myself ready for Commonwealths so this has always been the focus for me.”

Now 30 years old, Le Clos will be competing in the 50, 100 and 200m butterfly as well as the 100m freestyle and believes the South African men can also do something special in the 4x200m freestyle and 4x100m medley relays.

“Medals in the relays for us should be celebrated like gold medals so I’m very excited about that,” he said. “I’m checking up on the boys quite often, messaging them all privately just to see how training has been going... I think we can surprise a lot of people. I think if we all just do our jobs and all have a good week and we put ourselves in a spot where we’re competitive, I think that would be amazing.”

There are a number of youngsters on the team who will be looking to follow in Le Clos and Schoenmaker’s footsteps, including the likes of Lara van Niekerk (who recently claimed bronze in the 50m breaststroke at the World Championships in Budapest) and teenage Olympians Matt Sates and Pieter Coetzé.

“It’s a big Commonwealth Games for a lot of people,” said Le Clos. “Not only myself but we have a lot of youngsters coming through. Of course, Lara picking up a medal in the 50 was amazing at world champs. Matthew’s had a phenomenal year and a half, Pieter has had a great season. And of course, Tatjana – she’s a superstar and of course she’s got titles to defend so I think it’s a huge week for us as South African swimming,” added Le Clos.

Van Niekerk (19) reckoned: “It has been a busy time since Worlds catching up on school work and exams, but training has been going well, and luckily I have had the gym to train in when it gets really cold here in Pretoria.

“I am looking forward to being part of Team SA, and as I did for Worlds. I just want to focus on my own race and on really enjoying the whole experience of being at a big Games,” she added.

Sates, who struggled with a cold just before the World Championships, said: “I have been in the UK since World Champs preparing for the Commonwealth Games, and I am happy with how preparations have been going. It took a few days to recover fully after being sick during Worlds, but now I am now feeling good.

“I am still deciding on what events I will swim but will focus on the freestyle and individual medley races. This will be my first Commonwealth Games and so I just want to focus on doing my best, and on enjoying racing with the top swimmers again. It is always an honour to represent Team SA.”

There are also three disabled swimmers taking part in the Para swimming events in Birmingham. Christian Sadie claimed silver in 2018 in the S7 50m freestyle and will be looking for a return to the podium, while Cornell Leach and Alani Ferreira will be aiming to do the same in the women’s events.

“I am getting more and more excited by the minute for the Games,” said Ferreira. “This is my first Commonwealth Games so I’m very excited to be given the opportunity to race. There normally aren’t any races for the visually impaired.

This is the first time within my career that there are, and the only race is the 50m freestyle which is not my main race. It’s actually normally not even in my race schedule but I’m very excited to have taken this one on for the time being and to give it my best shot.

“The preparation has been interesting because it’s not my normal distance training for my 200 free and 100 breast and 200 IM so I’ve really enjoyed a bit of a change in the process and I’m so excited to see how I do in this race and just to go and represent.”

The swimming programme kicks off on Friday, 29 July and runs until 3 August.
