JOMBA! Showcases European and American Iconic Dance Companies

01 HANNAH MA ONDA VALENTINA ZAPPA c Bohumil KOSTOHRYZ 1606Five iconic European and American dance companies will be showcased in the 23rd JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience, presented by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts online from 24 August to 5 September 2021.

The historic New York based Limón Dance Company, UK’s ACE music and dance, Germany’s Hannah Ma, Sweden’s Cullberg, and Spain’s Aïda Colmenero Dïaz will feature in the JOMBA! European and American Crossings Platform.

The UK, Birmingham based ACE music and dance, which celebrates a long history of connections with South Africa, have come to JOMBA! presenting one of their signature works TEN directed by Gail and Ian Parmel and choreographed by José Agudo. Full of intense physical power and human fragility, TEN explores the concepts of moving away and leaving, looking at how and why people choose imagined destinies over the lives they always thought they'd live. Inspired by global migration, TEN is a visceral and exhilarating dance production combining contemporary dance with an essence of Flamenco, Kathak, Martial Arts and ACE's inimitable Afro-fusion style. (Wednesday, 25 August at 7pm)

The historic New York based Limón Dance Company who will showcase two dances by José Limón which are considered among the 20th Century’s greatest works of modern choreography presented, alongside a contemporary new piece Suite Donuts by emerging choreographer, Chafin Seymour. Artistic director to this historic American company, Dante Puleio, says that “the pairing of these works now seems fortuitous. Recent political events which have further raised awareness of social consciousness and racial justice make this group of dances all the more important today”. The company presents: Suite Donuts (2020) by Chafin Seymour, The Moor’s Pavane (1949), and There is a Time (1956), both by José Limón. (Friday, 27 August at 7pm)

Sweden’s Cullberg - in collaboration with Norrlandsoperan – will present a remarkable screen dance film On Earth I’m Done choreographed by Jefta van Dinther and performed by Suelem de Oliveira da Silva. In the archaic-futuristic diptych On Earth I’m Done, the audience is transported to a place torn out of the conventional space-time continuum. The first part of the diptych (which JOMBA! audience will be watching) Mountains, is a solo and is directed for film by Simon Flack.
 
Choreographer van Dinther says, “I try and tackle the question of how to be and stay in love with our ever-changing world. Through an expulsion of words, both familiar and foreign, the performer on stage acts as a conduit, lamenting on behalf of others. Her being unravels in the connection between the physical, biological and anthropological; between and desire - it is a race for survival!” (Wednesday, 1 September at 7pm)

Hannah Ma (hannahmadance), a German-Chinese choreographer born in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria with her award-winning dance focus that lies on contemporary rituals and the translation of archaic roots within our society also features on this platform. She presents ONDA - into the unknown, a collaboration with Sebastian M. Purfürst from LEM-studios in Berlin. ONDA is magnificent research type performance and art space production, curiously discussing the relationship of humans and nature against the background of anthropocentrism. Ma explains that her work is a “visual dance engagement with how do we define the ‘non- reproducible magical soul’, the aura, the prehistoric part in every individual, the meaning of love in this modern, digitalised and globalised society”. Her work, which crosses the divide between live and digital dance installations, has won numerous European dance awards. (Friday, 3 September at 7pm)

She Poems (Spain) is set to be the illustrious closing night film of the festival. The festival hosts Spanish dancer/choreographer Aïda Colemenero Dïaz who has made a series of beautiful short screen dance films called She Poems made during her on-going travels in Africa.

She Poems is Dïaz’s project, inspired by poems written by women, created and produced on the African continent by a new generation of female performing arts creators. Begun in 2013, and still on-going She Poems has produced 20 dance short films, 6 contemporary dance pieces and a photographic series of visual beauty and power. The creators of She Poems are unique and pioneering artists who, from their particular and varied African geographical, cultural and personal context, engage in intimate creative processes to transform a poetic score into body and audiovisual language, using performative codes that originate from their immediate daily environment, their heritage and their own creative impulse.

Aïda Colmenero Dïaz is an artist, actress, choreographer, dancer, filmmaker and a performing arts curator born in Madrid of Galician descent. Aïda is a leading artist in Spain thanks to her avant-garde career, which has led her to explore unusual regions of the world and to embark on unique creative processes, crossing borders and providing a complex and alternative reflection on identity and cultural heritage. Through her work, marked by her multidisciplinary creative capacity, she aims to connect minds, build geographical and cultural bridges, and recover historical memory. (Sunday, 5 September at 7pm)

Plastic Neutral partnership between local NPO WILDTRUST and Teqal

wildoceanWILDTRUST through their Blue Port project has entered a “plastic neutral” partnership with Teqal, a quality manufacturer of rigid plastic packaging servicing the Cosmetic, Personal Care and Industrial markets. In an effort to be 100% plastic waste neutral, for every kilogram of plastic Teqal converts into packaging, an equal amount of post-consumer plastic waste (PCPW) is collected from the environment and recycled.

The Blue Port Project is an initiative of WILDOCEANS (a programme of the WILDTRUST), with the aim of creating action-based research and the implementation of strategic interventions to reduce plastic waste in the Durban Port and ultimately restore the Durban Bay to its natural functioning state.

Teqal is a plastic manufacturer based in highly successful Dube Tradeport SEZ in KZN. Thanks to funding received from the incredibly supportive Industrial Development Corporation, Teqal are going through a very high growth. They are already active in using recycled content in their products that are also biodegradable. As a company they are trying to find ways to reduce their environmental footprint – and striving to be plastic neutral is certainly a big stride in that direction. Until the partnership with WILDTRUST, this goal was not going to be easy to achieve.

Rachel Kramer, Blue Port Project Manager said: “This agreement gives WILDOCEANS an opportunity to have sustainable finance streams which allows progression within these projects by increasing the teams’ operations in the port and continuing long term research and exploring different opportunities. The Blue Port Project is a good case study that illustrates how Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) partnerships can work. This is a good pilot project to see whether it can be upscaled to different projects and to expand within this project as well,” said Kramer.

WILDTRUST CEO Dr Roelie Kloppers expressed his excitement about the partnership saying that this is an interesting spin on tackling plastic pollution. "Quite often when we talk about recycling, the responsibility always seems to be on the consumer where there is very little responsibility on the producer. So, it's good to see that producers are taking accountability and investing in projects like this that make the impact on the environment more neutral.”

Director of Teqal, Sean Kirkham said: “The consumer is becoming more educated about the problems linked to plastic pollution and are beginning to push brands to push suppliers to be more environmentally conscious. We are now leading the pack in driving the message of being waste neutral. Government has also played a part in putting legislation in place that lets producers and retail companies know that they are also responsible for the plastic waste that they sell.”

“Plastic is highly recyclable and highly reusable. If we can get to a point where we make sure that the plastic is reused and recycled, we can continue to get the benefits of the solution it provides in packaging - but do it in a way that is sustainable. As a converter of plastic, it is important that we contribute to this initiative,” said Renee Kirkham, CFO of Teqal.

“I wish more people would tap into organisations like the WILDTRUST and do more to help the environment,” said Kirkham. “I would urge everyone - recyclers, converters, retailers and consumers to really look carefully at what it is they're doing and make sure that their contributions to this sustainable environmental initiative is channelled into areas and organisations like the WILDTRUST.”

FreeMe relocate Spotted Eagle Owl fledgling

free meThis Spotted Eagle Owl fledgling was recently admitted to FreeMe Wildlife.
 
Coming from Greytown, the fledgling needed to be relocated as it was in immediate danger.
 
The fledgling could not be relocated nearby for the parents to continue caring for it as the area was unsuitable. It still needs parental care as it is too young to fend for itself.

The decision was taken to admit the owl to FreeMe Wildlife. It will need only a few weeks of feeding for it to grow out its flight feathers so it can fly and hunt.

The decision to admit a healthy wild animal was not taken lightly, but considering the circumstances, there was no other option. Thankfully, the fledgling is in good health and will not spend much time at FreeMe Wildlife before being released back into the wild where it belongs.

Mystery of the abandoned Gardiner house

Abandoned house by adorned Nancy Gardiner who was a very famous gardener who wrote several books, had flowers named after her. Had the most beautiful Azalea garden and used her own home as an open garden. She sadly died at the age of 99 in 2020.
 
Still researching the details of the house and why it was left to rack and ruin. It must have been stunning in is hay day.' comment and photographs were shared by Lisa Michelle McAlery on a Facebook group called 'MYSTERIES OF THE ABANDONED'

Nare storms to victory in season opening Spar Grand Prix Race

 
Tadu NarePietermaritzburg, South Africa: Twenty-year old Tadu Nare (Nedbank) stormed to victory in the Maritzburg SPAR Grand Prix 10km race at Alexandra Park on Sunday morning, in a time of 32.22 minutes, giving her a headstart in the six race series.

The Ethiopian runner was runner-up to Namibian Helalia Johannes in the 2019 SPAR Grand Prix series. Johannes and other top runners like Irvette van Zyl and Gerda Steyn all missed the opening race of the 2021 SPAR Grand Prix series, because they are still recovering from running the marathon at the Olympic Games in Tokyo earlier this month.

The South African half marathon champion, Glenrose Xaba of Boxer, was second, in 33.40 minutes and rising star, 20 year-old Tayla Kavanagh of Murray & Roberts was third, in 33.50. It was the 2019 junior cross country champion’s first race as a senior.

The race, the first in this year’s SPAR Grand Prix series, was run strictly according to Covid protocols, with a limited field of elite runners and no spectators allowed. It was run over a looped course, described by the runners as challenging. The open runners started three minutes before the category runners.

“It was a pity that Helalia, Irvette and Gerda weren’t here, because it would have been a faster race,” said Nare.

She said she thought she would have finished in 30 minutes on a flatter course.

However, she said she was using the SPAR Grand Prix races as training runs in preparation for the Barcelona marathon in November, and would be wary of not burning herself out before the marathon.

Xaba, who is recovering from a knee and a calf injury, said she had found the downhills on the course painful, but knew that she could cope with the uphill parts of the course.

All three said they were very happy to be running competitively again. Nare said Ethiopia had not been badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, but the lack of international competition affected the ability of runners to earn a living.

“The hard lockdowns made training very difficult,” said Xaba. “We had limited time to train and many of the facilities we normally use were closed. It was also difficult not earning money from races around South Africa.”

Xaba said she planned to run in all six SPAR Grand Prix races and was preparing for the Paris marathon in October.
The format for this year’s SPAR Grand Prix is slightly different from previous years, with points being awarded for the first 25 runners home. There will be no time bonuses this year.

The winner of each race will win R25 000, with R17 500 for second place and R15 000 for third place. The overall winner of the SPAR Grand Prix will earn R190 000. The runner-up will receive R90 000 and the third-placed athlete will receive R55 000.

The next SPAR Grand Prix race is in Cape Town on September 4, followed by the Durban race on September 11. The Tshwane race will be run on Heritage Day, September 24, the Johannesburg race on October 3 and the season's final race will be in Gqeberha on October 9.

Road Closures and Traffic Management Plan for SPAR Grand Prix Maritzburg

road closuresSunday, August 22, will see the smallest field in the history of the SPAR Grand Prix Maritzburg race as just under 100 elite runners take to a 10km loop around Alexandra Park in the Capital.

The event is the first invitational event for southern Africa’s elite female road runners and starts the 6 race Grand Prix Series, which includes; Cape Town, Durban, Tshwane, Joburg and Gqeberha.

Pietermaritzburg residents are advised that due to the small and extremely fast field, the event will have a minimum impact on traffic flow in and around Alexandra Park.

Road closures and affected routes are as follows:
Saturday, 21 August
Park Drive between Princess Elizabeth Drive and Princess Margaret Drive will be closed from 08:00

Sunday, 22 August
Alexandra Park will be closed from 04:00 to 12:00
College Road will be closed from 05:30 to 09:00 to East bound traffic (heading towards Alexandra Road) from West Street / Prince Alfred Street intersection to Topham Road. Traffic will be diverted towards Campsdrift Road.

College Road will remain open to traffic heading West (towards the CBD).
Residents living in the New Scotland Road area will be able to leave the area via Topham Road towards Alexandra Road or on College Road travelling towards the CBD.
Residents making use of Mc Alister Avenue, Verbena Place and between New Scotland Road and Mc Alister will be able to leave via College Road towards the CBD, or access their residence from Alexandra Road, Topham Road or New Scotland Road into College to heading towards the CBD.

A single lane of traffic will be closed from 04:00 to 08:30 on Alexandra Road between Topham Road and Princess Margaret Drive leaving a lane of traffic open for vehicles travelling towards Alan Paton Avenue.

Alexandra and College Roads and most of Alexandra Park will be reopened fully as soon as the road is clear of the last runner.

Park Drive between Princess Elizabeth Drive and Princess Margaret Drive will be remain closed until 13:00.

Due to the current Covid-19 Regulations spectators are not permitted at the event but it will be live streamed via KZN SPAR Women’s 10/5km Race Facebook page, and the athletes can be tracked on the Sportsplits App which can be downloaded from Google Play.

The immediate area around The Oval, including Park Drive will be designated as the Event Zone and access will be restricted to athletes, race officials and accredited media only. Strict Covid-19 Protocols will be in place to ensure the safety of all involved. The organisers appeal to the public to stay off the race route during the competition.

Spar Grand Prix gets underway in Maritzburg this weekend

Kesa MolotsaneTop women road runners from across Africa have a reason to celebrate this week. After various delays, the first invitational SPAR 10km Grand Prix race will take place at Alexandra Park in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday August 22.

The race is by invitation only, with a maximum number of 250 elite athletes taking part. All age categories will be represented and an extra category for the over-70s has been added this year.

The Maritzburg 10km is the first of six races with the top runners collecting points towards the SPAR Grand Prix, with the athlete with most points collecting a cheque for R185 000. Prize money for the Grand Prix series amounts to a whopping two-million Rand.

In the previous Grand Prix series in 2019, Namibian Helalia Johannes made a clean sweep, winning all six races in record time to win the series with maximum points. However Johannes, who finished in 11th place in the women’s marathon at the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo, will not take part in the Maritzburg race because she is still recovering. Her Nedbank teammate, Irvette van Zyl, who finished third in the SPAR Grand Prix in 2019, is also recovering and will not be taking part.

There will still be plenty of runners vying for top spot on Sunday, including Ethiopian Tadu Nare (Nedbank), who finished second in the 2019 Grand Prix. Former Grand Prix winner Kesa Molotsane (Murray & Roberts), who has recovered from a serious injury, will be trying to stake her claim. Molotsane finished third in the last Grand Prix.

Glenrose Xaba (Boxer) is one of the rising stars of South African road running. In May she won the national half-marathon title in Gqeberha and is likely to be a strong contender for top honours.

Other elite runners include the twins, Diana-Lebo Phalula and Lebogang Phalula-Luthuli, both former SPAR Grand Prix winners, and from the Boxer stable, Rutendo Nyahora, Janet Mbhele and Patience Murowe.

Earlier in the year, some of the SPAR Grand Prix races had to be postponed because of a spike in Covid-19 cases and subsequent lockdown. The Maritzburg race is being held on its original date, and SPAR Marketing Director, Mike Prentice, believes this will be a boost for the city that suffered most from the looting and unrest in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng in July.

Prentice said he was very happy that the SPAR Grand Prix schedule could be resumed.

“We know that the professional athletes are desperate to get back into competitive running and to earn some money,” he said.

“When we had to postpone the races in June, we promised that they would all take place later in this year, and so it is gratifying that the first will take place on Sunday,” said Prentice.

No spectators will be allowed and there will be strict Covid-19 protocols, but the race will be livestreamed and fans can follow their favourite runners by using the SPORTSPLITS app.

ucsiTWO SETS OF CRIMINALS BUST IN HILTON IN ONE DAY! Thanks to the Snipr number plate recognition technology and the swift response of the Hilton SAPS and the security companies that form part of the 'Hilton Rapid Response' team, two separate arrests took place on Wednesday in Hilton. These criminals were wanted for ATM fraud and murder!!

In both cases, the vehicles the criminals were traveling in were flagged by Umngeni Community Safety Initiative - UCSI NPC Snipr cameras at the entry points to Hilton. Swift responses and brilliant team work from the Hilton Rapid Response team resulted in the vehicles being pulled over, and suspects apprehended and arrested! 

Thank you to the Hilton community members who contribute monthly towards the Hilton Security Initiatives (HCSi /"Street Hawks"), which have enabled the installation of the Snipr cameras in Hilton. Huge recognition also to the Hilton Rapid Response team (comprised of SAPS and private security companies Knight, Aliwal, Magma, National, Red Alert, PMB Security, Mi7 and WTSU) who work tirelessly every day to keep Hilton safe.
