Call to support cyclist's recovery after near-fatal car accident
On the 4th of June, the owner of Jowetts Cycles, Ingrid Flint (57) from Ashburton, Pietermaritzburg was involved in a horrific, near-fatal car accident when she crashed into an 18-wheeler truck head-on while traveling to Durban on the N3.When the paramedics arrived on the scene, Ingrid was found unconscious and had to be sedated due to the severe head and back injuries she sustained. She was then taken to St. Annes Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, where she is currently in ICU.
A long road to recovery
While doctors predict Ingrid’s body will recover from the traumatic ordeal she has experienced, she has suffered brain damage, the full extent of which is yet to be determined.
To help the Flint family cover any medical expenses not covered by their medical aid, as well as the lengthy rehabilitation Ingrid will need to get back on her feet, a fellow cyclist, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy, to appeal to the public for support.
Through generous donations from 65 donors both locally and abroad, over R70 000 has been raised towards Ingrid’s rehabilitation, estimated to cost around R750 000.
“Ingrid, wife to Wally, mum to us 3 kids and an incredible grandmother to 5 almost 6 grandchildren, has always been a very strong and determined person; anything she sets her mind on she achieves. Thankfully she was at the fittest she had ever been before the accident which we hope will play an integral part in her recovery. It is going to be a very long recovery for her based on the injuries she sustained but we believe that she will never stop fighting” – says Ingrid’s daughter, Lauren.

N3 South Bound at Town Hill
Here is a report prepared under the direction of the HRA Roads Task Team dealing with the necessary upgrade of the alternate route to the N3 south at Town Hill.
The upgrade of the alternate route is being dealt with through detailed discussions with SANRAL in respect of the involvement of all interested and affected parties.
Representatives of the Task Team have carried out informal inspections of the Cuckoo Lane contract over the last few months. At all stages it was noted that procedures and construction methods have not been carried out in accordance with good engineering practice. The HRA has received specialist geotechnical advice, and a report from local resident and farmer Grant Roodt expressing particular concerns regarding safety and negative ecological impacts. The HRA will submit a detailed technical report with appropriate recommendations to Councillor Pam Passmoor and to the municipality.
In its current condition the road may not be fit for purpose and may be unsafe. Consequences are almost certainly wasted expenditure and an extended period when further will be required.
Electricity Update from Rob Maitland-Stuart
Two out of the three cable sections in each of the two 33kV feeders (A & B) that supply Crossways S/S from Retief S/S in Pmb, have been upgraded from the previous smaller 95mm² 3-core cables to the 630mm² 3 x 1-core equivalent. These upgraded cables are now aligned in terms of power flow capability, to the overhead line sections that were upgraded some 7 – 8 years ago. This is a big step forward in getting our 33kV supply network strengthened and made more reliable. However, I must caution the Hilton residents of a perception doing the rounds on social media, indicating that our supply problems between Retief and Crossways substations are now a thing of the past. This is simply not true. Until the remainder (1.2kM approx.) of the old 95mm² 3-core cables between Retief S/S and Quarry Rd in Pmb are also upgraded to the 630mm² 3 x 1-core equivalent, the situation remains unchanged, as this cable section now becomes the weakest link, i.e., both 33kV feeders (A & B) must be in service to support the Hilton load. Should one of these feeders fail, the other will trip on overcurrent, necessitating the implementation of load reduction in the Hilton area to limit the load on the one 33kV feeder until the fault on the other has been located and repaired.
Furthermore, and resulting from the recent and prolonged outages in the Winterskloof area over the last 7 - 10 days, a meeting has been arranged with the Msunduzi MM and reps from the Electricity Unit to discuss ways of expediting the upgrade of the respective 11kV cables out of Crossways S/S regarding the two feeders concerned. Added to that approach would also be the replacement of the entire 11kV switchboard at Crossways substation itself, following the catastrophic failure of one of the 11kV breakers in the existing switchboard this past Saturday.

There are hundreds of languages around the world but a smile speaks them all
The most rewarding feeling is when we complete a smile makeover for a patient or relieve any pain and our patients walk out of our practices smiling more than ever before!Law enforcement officials harness technology to combat trafficking in shark products
Recognising the challenges faced by law enforcement officials, WILDOCEANS (a programme of the WILDTRUST) through their ‘Shark & Ray Protection Project’, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), and TRAFFIC have put together a series of training sessions that will assist customs and law enforcement officials across South Africa.“It’s not just a issue in South Africa; across the world, customs and law enforcement agencies on the frontline in combatting wildlife trafficking are under-staffed and under-equipped,” said Markus Burgener, Senior Fisheries Expert at TRAFFIC.
Globally, overfishing of sharks has led to some species listed as threatened and others labelled extinct on the IUCN Red List. Fisheries worldwide supply shark fins to Asian markets and shark meat to markets in South America, south-east Asia, and Europe.
More than 40 shark and ray species have been listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Listing in Appendix II requires permits to be issued confirming that the shipments of shark products were obtained legally and sustainably. However, shark fins are difficult to identify to a species level, and illegal traders use this to their advantage by falsely declaring shipments of fins as being from non-CITES listed species.
Accurately identifying Appendix-listed species is vital to ensure the effective enforcement of CITES. However, this is a massive challenge for frontline enforcement officials who face high volumes of shark fins passing through land, air, and seaports, along with additional challenges of having to check for other illegal contraband such as drugs and weapons.
“The training and provision of shark identification tools will support law enforcement officials to make better informed and more confident compliance decisions to curb the illegal shark trade,” continued Burgener.
These training sessions will highlight the Shark ID Toolkit developed for frontline law enforcement officials such as Fisheries Control Officers and Customs officials. The toolkit includes pocketbooks for quick and easy identification of shark fins, posters, comprehensive identification guides, and 3D printed and painted replica fins of CITES-listed shark species developed by TRAFFIC.
“The overarching objective of our project, made possible by the Shark Conservation Fund (SCF), is to increase protection for the species across South Africa,” said WILDOCEANS Marine Biologist Dr Jennifer Olbers. “We are truly excited about what this training and all these tools will mean for the conservation of one of the most endangered taxa on the planet.”
Information on sharks caught in South African fisheries and relevant trade dynamics will be shared through the training series. Details such as the volume of shark products traded, the key countries importing shark fins and meat from South Africa, the value of the trade, and any discrepancies in reporting of the trade from South Africa are pivotal insights that customs and law enforcement need to be able to effectively contribute to curbing illegal trade in sharks.
"The shark identification exercise at the end of the training brings into practice what we learned here today," said Mathapelo Kgukutu from SARS, Cape Town division.
Another component covered is the shark meat trade from South Africa to Australia, sourced from several demersal shark species whose population status is of concern. The identification of shark trunks from these species will be addressed using a newly revised Shark Trunk Guide.

Barn Owl journeys from Umgeni Vet to FreeMe on route to a new location
This juvenile was found trapped in Edendale hospital. After being captured, it was taken through to Umgeni Veterinary Clinic where it was given a full check-up.No injuries were found and the owl is fit and healthy. Unfortunately, we are unable to return this youngster back to the location it was found.
While we begin the search for the perfect release site, this Barn Owl has been fitted with a unique metal SAFRING identification ring and has been placed into an outdoor aviary.

SPAR BELIEVES THE SA YOUTH SHOULD BE ABLE TO #LIVELIMITLESS
The global pandemic has locked down our youth during a time of their lives where they are desperately looking to spread their wings. The past 18 months have tested the country’s resolve and demonstrated the incredible resilience of all sections of the South African society.
As part of the 2021 SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge’s campaign, we encourage South African women to #LiveLimitless and break down the barriers in their lives and redefine the limits that may exist.
There is a stigma and shame attached to their menstrual cycle for many young girls in South Africa. Due to the lack of access to simple hygiene products, they must make the difficult decision between embarrassment or education.
