Action Stations for Hilton Siding Shopping Centre

Hilton Siding 3 MediumThose who visit Hilton Railway Station will notice the hub of activity. Shift Capital are currently levelling and landscaping the area along the tracks to create a new community space.
 
Shift Capital, developers of the new Hilton Siding Shopping Centre, have begun transforming the land alongside the railway line between Park Lane and Azalea Drive into a community green space. This forms part of the development of the new Hilton Siding Shopping Centre, set to open in December this year. One percent of the development’s building contract value is dedicated to community upliftment projects.
 
Public picnic space
 
The area opposite the Station Stop Coffee Shop is currently being levelled and alien species removed. The next step is to plant grass and indigenous plants. Burgess Landscapes, Azalea drive locals, will be landscaping indigenous gardens and natural rock features. The result will be a lawn area for families to picnic, relax and get some fresh air in a safe and enjoyable setting.
 
More parking!
 
Shift Capital will also be creating 50 public parking spaces adjacent to Hilton Railway Station, which is becoming an increasingly popular destination for good coffee, delicious food, local performances, events and markets.

There is plenty to look forward to in the coming months. Along with the Hilton Siding Shopping Centre, Shift Capital are also working with the Hilton Steam Heritage Association (HSHA) to preserve and uplift the railway station’s natural heritage:
● One of the small diesel trains (once used to guide larger steam trains around the tracks) will be put back to work, possibly allowing people to ride the train to Cedara and back.
● Some of the other unused carriages at the station will be converted into stalls and pop-up flea markets selling local products, craft beer, gin and causal food.
● Railway sleepers are being reused as public benches.
A portion of the income generated from the stalls and train rides will be used to fund further community spaces, such as an open-air amphitheatre, an art gallery and a rock-climbing wall.
 
Minimising disruption
 
The major earthworks on the site should be finished before children return to school. In the case of any delays, trucks will be timed to leave and enter the site during ‘off-peak’ hours.

Hilton loses a mentor, servant leader and friend, rest peacefully Rob Bircher

rob bircher 2020It is with sadness that we inform you that Rob Bircher, the founder and a beloved pastor of Crossways Church, passed away on Monday 28 December. Rob loved people and his heartfelt their humanity and their need for a Saviour from their sin and a restorer of their souls. He was an incredibly loving husband to Pam, a deeply loved father (of many besides his own four special children: Heather, Ali, Richard and James), adored grandfather of his 11 grandchildren, mentor, servant leader and friend.

Laddsworth Grade 7 Prize Giving Ceremony 2020

Laddsworth Dux 2020 500Laddsworth Primary School held its annual Prize Giving on Friday 11 December 2020. The Prize Giving was very different this year, with only Grade Sevens and their parents attending and strict COVID-19 safety protocols being adhered to. The Prize Giving was followed by the Bell Ringing Ceremony.

Matthew Bishop was named the Dux of the School for 2020 and received the Trust Cup: Dux of the School. He also received the Laddsworth Natural Sciences Trophy, The Gould Cup for English, the Life Orientation Cup and the Gordijn Cup for Social Sciences.

Laddsworth Primary School wishes the Class of 2020 all the best for the future and encourages them to continue ‘Aiming High’.

Laddsworth's Charli enjoys success in ROAG KZN Trail running series

Charli Mlotshwa copyCharli Mlotshwa, a Grade 7 pupil at Laddsworth Primary School, competed in the ROAG semi-virtual trail running series, over the last 3 months. The semi-virtual races were incorporated in the overall ROAG series to achieve the minimum number of races for the year. Charli won the virtual series for his age group and was the overall winner.

Charli also took part in the ROAG short course series at Karkloof, Illovo Eston, Wartburg and Drak Gardens, where he won his age group and was the overall winner of the 8km trail run.

Laddsworth pupil shines at PRO Kennex UTR Tennis

Laddsworth logoAdam Tilbury, a Grade 7 pupil at Laddsworth Primary School, took part in the Pro Kennex UTR Tennis Event at Kershaw Park in Pietermaritzburg, from 28 to 29 November 2020. Adam was the runner up in the Under 14 Singles section and was the winner in the Under 14 Doubles section.

The Angora Rabbits have very impressive coats and are often actually bred for their wool. However, they also make fantastic companion pets and can bond very quickly to their pet parents.
 
The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) recognizes four different breeds of Angora rabbit: French, English, Satin, and Giant. The Giant Angora is the biggest of the breeds and the Satin Angora has finer and softer hair than the other breeds.

This 'Friday funny' from The Local Choice Pharmacy Hilton Health is on point

local choice 20202020 was the year in which the world’s vocabulary was really expanded. To help us make sense of the changes that have suddenly become part of our everyday lives, we learned our first Covid-19 terms, like social distancing, self-quarantine and "flatten the curve". We also learned the difference between epidemic and pandemic; quarantine and isolation; respirator and ventilator; contagious and infectious.

Appreciation for improved security strategy in Hilton

security apreciation braaiA lunchtime braai, arranged by the Hilton Community Neighbourhood Watch (HCNW) and sponsored by Hilton Quarry SuperSpar, was recently held at Cowan House in appreciation of the sterling work carried out by their members, who have gone far beyond the call of duty, to reduce crime in Hilton.

The HCNW was established in mid-2019 by members of the Hilton SAPS and Community, to counter rising crime in Hilton. The HCNW then established the Hilton Rapid Response (HRR) motorized unit which comprises the Hilton SAPS, volunteer members of the Community and some of the Armed Response Security companies operating in Hilton who volunteer their services free to the unit.

Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to Knight Security Solutions, Red Alert, Magma Security, Winterskloof Tactical Surveillance Unit, Aliwal Security, Pmb Security, National Security and Bidvest Protea Coin (Mondi) at the braai.

A network of five Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera gantries have been erected at the five main entry/exit points to Hilton by the Umngeni Community Safety Initiative (UCSI) which have proven successful in supplying information to the SAPS regarding vehicles suspected to have been involved in crime. The UCSI also received a Certificate of Appreciation from the HCNW.

The successes achieved by the HCNW and HRR are directly attributed to members of Hilton SAPS who lead and guide the process, followed by Armed Response Security companies and members of the community. This initiative is supported and appreciated by the Hilton Community.

KZN Youth Choir for Laddsworth's Kendra

KENDRA TONGUEKendra Tongue, a Grade 7 pupil at Laddsworth Primary School, has been selected for the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Youth Choir. She attended the KZN Midlands Youth choir camp, which was held at the Golden Harvest Conference Centre in Nottingham Road from 01 December to 04 December.

Kendra also just received her Music Theory results from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and she passed the Grade 3 Music Theory exam with a Merit of 87%.

Laddsworth is very proud of Kendra’s musical and choral achievements and wishes her all the best for her high school career.

Laddsworth pupils have KZN Squash in sight

laddsworth copy copy copy copy copy copy copy copy copy copy copyKZN Schools Squash completed three of the four compulsory tournaments for 2020 before the country went into isolation for COVID-19. Only one final trial round of trials was left and that was to finalize their positions in the teams.

Laddsworth Pupils Aiden McNeill (Grade 5) and Lily Strydom (Grade 4) qualified for selection and would have been selected for the Inter-Provincial teams if COVID-19 had not intervened in the selection of the 2020 teams.
