We are sure that, when asked, the community of Hilton will include ‘security and safety’ amongst their priority expectations from “Love Hilton”, the proposed name of the planned Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) for Hilton. Wherever UIPs have been established across South Africa they have included a strong focus on security and safety, and we would also look to ensuring that Hilton is as secure and safe as possible for all who live and work here.

Fortunately, Hilton already has a successful security system in operation. With excellent support from Hilton SAPS, working closely with security companies and community members, supported by community initiatives, together with the UCSI camera network and other surveillance installations, much progress has been made towards keeping Hilton more secure and safe.

Love Hilton will offer the chance to take our security activities even further. While the current initiatives are financially dependent on the contributions of only a small percentage of Hilton residents, the establishment of a UIP will see all property owners contributing.

Plans for sustainable and effective security and safety systems will be included in the Business Plan and Budget approved by the community and submitted to uMngeni. This is a clear example of the advantages of all of us contributing towards the general well-being of our community. The process of exploring the establishment of a UIP will produce many other ideas worthy of consideration.

We are all likely to agree, however, that the first step is to ensure that Hilton remains secure and safe for all of us.

Pretoria teenager Lara van Niekerk continued her sensational form at the SA Short Course Championships on Saturday, storming to yet another SA and African record in the Pietermaritzburg pool.

The 19-year-old double Commonwealth Games gold medallist stormed to victory in the 50m breaststroke in 29.62 seconds to better the record she set at the same event a year ago. In doing so, she also secured another A qualification mark for the World Short Course Championships in Melbourne, Australia this December.

She may have gone faster than ever before, but Van Niekerk reckoned afterwards, it could have been even quicker.

“I definitely think I can go faster – especially coming back from such a big competition [like the Commonwealth Games], you are very tired,” she said after the race. “When I go back from the heats sessions, I literally just go and sleep… I’m dead because such a big competition takes so much out of you.

“I think my results could have been slightly better – if I had all that energy I had at Commonwealths so I think the future will have better times,” she added.

Meanwhile, also once again showing his class was 18-year-old Pieter Coetzé who dipped below the A qualifying mark on his way to victory in the 100m backstroke in 51.08. He also claimed the 50m freestyle title in 22.28, after edging ahead of Commonwealth Games teammate Clayton Jimmie (second in 22.32).

“I just wanted to get at least one qualifying time here so I was very happy to get that done and I’m excited to rest a little bit now ahead of the World Junior Championships,” said Coetzé, referring to his next major competition which will take place in Lima, Peru from 30 August to 4 September.

“It will be nice to get back to basics, train a little bit and get some schoolwork done – and then I’m excited for Peru. It will be a long flight and everything but I’m excited to see what I can do there,” he added.

Meanwhile, several other swimmers in Pietermaritzburg achieved B qualifying times, that will still put them in contention for selection for the World Short Course Championships later in the year.

Caitlin de Lange claimed the national 50m freestyle title in a time of 25.27. Her morning heat time of 31.47 in the 50m breaststroke was also a B qualifier, while she also previously achieved the required time in the 100m freestyle.

“It’s going better than expected,” admitted De Lange afterwards. “I just got back from racing in Ireland so I was really looking forward to coming and racing short course.”

Rebecca Meder claimed the 200m individual medley title in a B qualifying time of 2:10.38 with second-placed Tucker also dipping under the mark in 2:13.24.

Local teen Matt Sates then did the same in the men’s 200 IM, taking his sixth title of the Championships in a time of 1:55.98 while Stephanie Houtman claimed victory in the 400m freestyle in a B qualifying time of 4:14.19 with second-placed Catherine van Rensburg also achieving the qualifier in 4:15.19.

'After entering an artwork to the Sasol New Signatures earlier this year, my sculpture "Escapade" made it through the 1st round.

100 Artworks per drop off area (found all around the country) were selected and were then sent to Pretoria for the final round of selection.

Once selected, the chosen works are curated, forming the Sasol New Signatures exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum. Here, the artworks are judged individually, based on the concept, use of material, quality of craftsmanship, and skill demonstrated.

I am grateful for the opportunity that Sasol has provided me and many other talented artists throughout the country and would like to say a huge Thank you to them.

Lara van Niekerk and Rebecca Meder ensured the SA Short Course Championships in Pietermaritzburg ended on a high note with both swimmers dipping under the A qualifying time for the World Short Course Championships at the end of the year in the 200m breaststroke.

It was a impressive result for both swimmers, considering Van Niekerk is better known for her sprinting in the 50 and 100m breaststroke events, while Meder is more of an individual medley swimmer.

Both admitted afterwards that having the other to compete against in the race made all the difference. Van Niekerk took the national title in a time of 2:22.75 with Meder second in 2:23.37.

“I think if she hadn’t been next to me, I definitely wouldn’t have gone that hard so I’m super-happy,” said Van Niekerk. “It’s another A qualifying time and a good way to end off this whole competition thing I’ve had going for the last four months,” added the 19-year-old double Commonwealth Games champion who also achieved A qualifying times in the 50 and 100m breaststroke in Pietermaritzburg.

“We laughed at the end of the race and said if we hadn’t been next to each other, we don’t know if we would have gone that time but it’s a good way to end the meet,” said Meder.

“I never thought I’d get an A time in the 200 breaststroke but being able to go B times in all my other heat swims and then again in the finals is great. I finally feel more like myself… it’s good confidence for me for my medleys.”

Van Niekerk’s coach Eugene da Ponte was also pleased with the week’s work. “It’s been a good gala overall coming off the international season we’ve just been through. There wasn’t much of a break before we went into this, so I was expecting Lara to be a little bit tired,” he said.

“She still got through the week with three qualifying times so I’m not going to complain. I think it was pretty successful overall. We managed to go a little bit faster in all three events than we were here last year… so overall a good gala and we’re happy with the results,” added Da Ponte.

Meanwhile, two swimmers also managed to dip under the B qualifying mark in the 1500m freestyle – which puts them in the running for selection to the team to compete at the World Short Course Championships in Melbourne in December.

Stephanie Houtman claimed the national title in 16:42.10 with Catherine van Rensburg second in 16:48.60. Dakota Tucker was the other swimmer to dip below the B qualifying time on Sunday, claiming the 200m butterfly title in 2:13.25.

Relishing being back on home turf, Pietermaritzburg teenager Matt Sates added two more national titles to the three he won a day earlier at the SA Short Course Swimming Championships on Friday.

 

The A qualification times required for the World Short Course Championships proved elusive on the day, but a total of six swimmers did achieve the B qualifying times in their respective races, meaning they’ll still be in line for selection for the team to represent South Africa at the global event in Melbourne, Australia this December.

 

Among them was Sates, who achieved the B qualifying marks in both the 200m freestyle and the 100m butterfly.

 

The 19-year-old claimed the 200m freestyle title in a time of 1:44.26 while Andrew Ross also dipped under the time, finishing second in 1:46.71.

 

Sates then achieved the B qualifier in the 100m butterfly after winning in a time of 51.90 and admitted afterwards he was still feeling the effects of his recent efforts at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

 

“It has been tiring. I’ve had lots of trips and lots of galas so it’s nice to be back home and it’s really nice to race short course again,” he said.

 

“I’m not really trying for times too much, I’m just trying to race each event as well as possible. I raced two races today and got two B qualifying times so I’m happy with that,” added Sates who will be looking for another title in the 200 individual medley on Saturday.

 

Also pleased with her efforts in Pietermaritzburg was Rebecca Meder, who recently celebrated her 20th birthday at the Commonwealth Games. The Durban star claimed the 100m butterfly title in a B qualifying time of 57.93.

 

“It’s going very, very well. Coming back from the Commonwealth Games it’s been racing and straight into racing which is tiring mentally more than physically. Mentally, you just have to think ‘ok, let’s do it again, let’s keep going,’” she said, also explaining she’s been recovering from a sinus infection.

 

As for her decision to drop the 400 individual medley to focus on the butterfly on Friday, Meder added: “I proved at Commonwealths that I’ve got some sprinting speed in me. In short course [in a 25m pool] my underwaters and turns are pretty strong so I thought let me go for the 100 fly and see what I can do there. I was just short of the A qualifying time, but it was a massive PB [personal best] for me so I think I definitely made the right decision.”

 

In Meder’s absence it was 17-year-old Dakota Tucker who powered to victory in the 400m individual medley, taking the title in a time of 4:38.16 – also a B qualifying time for the World Championships.

 

Others to achieve the same feat were fellow teenagers Pieter Coetzé and Ruard van Renen in the 50m backstroke – Coetzé taking the title in 23.80 (just five hundredths of a second off the A qualifying mark) with Van Renen second in 24.41.

 

SA Short Course swimming action continues on Saturday in Pietermaritzburg with the event coming to an end on Sunday, 14 August.

People love a good juxtaposition.

Big urban cities are great, but, for many of us, there’s no place like the country or small town living. UIP stands for urban improvement precinct, but it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean “paving paradise to put up a parking lot”, as Joni Mitchell said. The vision for “Love Hilton” is to improve public space and to build on the numerous community initiatives that have been so successful.

“Love Hilton” is also about being representative of the community and creating places that cater to all age groups and demographics. There are many faces to Hilton, and “Love Hilton” represents an exciting opportunity for the people of Hilton to contribute positively to the space in which we live and work.

“Love Hilton” will ensure that all ratepayers contribute to the proposed improvements.

These improvements to Hilton will have significant economic spin-offs for the area, attracting investment and growing property values. UIPs have had a lot of success in other parts of South Africa, increasing safety and security, improving the environment, and fostering civic pride, to name a few benefits.

Despite the benefits, nothing is to be forced on the community. “Love Hilton” is about meeting community needs, and will not proceed without proven majority support for the plan.

It will take”Love Hilton” the next year to reach a point where we are able to submit the application to uMngeni . The thorough process will include:

Extensive communication with the community

A survey eliciting concerns and ideas from residents

Further consultation before developing a business plan and budget to be presented for approval in a referendum

Finalisation and presentation to uMngeni for adoption.
