Miss Teen Commonwealth Grand Finale

sarah andrews miss teenThe final event for the 24 Miss Teen Commonwealth South Africa Finalists is fast approaching and is bound to be a spectacular evening. The Grand Finale is to be held at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg on the 12th September at 7:30pm. On the night the new Miss Teen, Miss, Mrs and Mr Commonwealth South Africa will be chosen after interviews and the modelling of evening wear, sports outfits and national costumes. Tickets are R350 each and can be bought on Computicket. I would love to share this evening with you. If you would like to support me by being there, please use the code "Sarah" for each and every ticket you purchase. There are no words to express my gratitude for being able to compete in the Commonwealth Finale.
 
Thanks to the incredible support rendered by the Hilton Community, my home town, we were able to raise R4450 through the Tabitha Raffle for Tabitha Children's Home, my chosen charity. It has been wonderful to be able to work alongside such inspiring people, who motivate me to give back to those less fortunate than myself. It is true indeed that "we are blessed to be a blessing".
 
With the Crowning fast approaching I can only say I am privileged to have made it this far-and I certainly couldn't have done it without all the support I have been given. No matter what happens next, I am so grateful and I wouldn't trade this experience for the world. The lessons I have learnt are more valuable than any title could ever be. So, crown or no crown, I will walk away having gained confidence, wisdom, beautiful relationships, important life lessons and precious memories.
 
I am reminded of this quote when I consider what it takes to make a difference. "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference." May this be our prayer as a community.

Hilton Bowling Club news 5 August 2015

hilton bowling club lenton trophyForty-one players put in tabs on Tuesday. Thanks to the generosity of our farming member, John Fowler the team of George Oldham, Etzel Nuss and Hamish Gerrard won giant-sized grapefruit. Thursday saw 30 players vying for grapefruit once again. Victors this time were Derick Hull, Arthur Daugherty and Vince Seale.
 
The annual interclub match against Umgeni Waterfall took place in a cheerful and companionable atmosphere on Friday. The Lenton Trophy for this meeting, carved and presented by past Hilton member Tony Lenton, came home for the first time since its inception when Hilton beat Umgeni by ten shots. Well done to all team members and thanks to Umgeni for the fun.
 
A busy week lies ahead with a match against Howick on Wednesday, the If Trips on Friday and normal tabs-in on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Using a General or Special Power of Attorney

mgf attorneys logoI am often asked by family members to advise on the use of a Special or General Power of Attorney in the case where there is an elderly relative or spouse who has signed such a document and is now mentally incapacitated.
 
The short answer is that our law of agency specifies that an agent cannot do that which his principal has no capacity to do himself. As soon as a person loses mental capacity the Power of Attorney which they signed during a period of full mental capacity is automatically revoked and is of no further force and effect.
 
I am sometimes confronted with outrage when I deliver this news! The agent feels that their principal gave them the capacity to act on their behalf whilst they were in possession of their full mental faculties and now they are faced with the problem of how to deal with bank accounts, transact shares or immovable property and the like.
 
There is a solution. But this solution is really only worthwhile if the principal's estate is quite substantial. The solution is to make an application to court for the appointment of a curator. First of all any interested party (usually a family member) will approach the court to have a Curator ad Litem appointed. This curator then interviews the incapacitated person and also gets input from doctors and psychiatrists and reports back to the court. In the event that the court accepts the Curator ad Litem's report they will then appoint a Curator Bonis who will then look after the affairs of the person so curated.
 
It does happen that many people continue to rely on the Power of Attorney that has already been signed. They run the risk, however, of having other family members suing them for failure to properly administer that person's affairs and perhaps of unduly benefiting themselves.
 
If the incapacitated person's estate is small then the curator bonis option is too expensive and other ways of dealing with that persons affairs will have to be found.

KZN U18 Basketball Reps travel to JHB for the IPT

u18 basketball reps st annesJess Pinnel, Sigongakonke Maphumulo and Thina Dumalisile from St Anne's Diocesan College travelled to Johannesburg in the school holidays to compete in the annual Inter-Provincial Basketball Tournament where the KZN U18 Team finished 5th. When asked about the competition Jess recalls that "it was an amazing experience to be able to compete at that level, we learnt a lot". All of the provincial teams all stayed together in Hillbrow, an experience in itself, where they got to know each other off the court.

Versatile and eco-friendly brilliant Borax

borax newsyBorax also known as sodium borate, is a naturally occurring substance and an eco-friendly solution for many things around the house.
 
(SAFETY WARNING Just because borax is natural, that doesn't mean its harmless. You should always use gloves when handling it and keep it out of reach of children and pets. While safe in the diluted solutions borax could be very harmful
to children and pets if ingested.)
 
20 Household uses for Borax:
1. Keep roaches, water bugs and ants away by sprinkling a combination of equal parts all-natural borax and sugar.
2. Keep mice out by sprinkling borax on the floor along the wall.
3. Get rid of bed bugs by sprinkling borax on your mattress. Let it sit and vacuum it up
4. Kill flees by sprinkling borax on your carpet. Leave it for an hour and vacuum it up thoroughly.
5. Remove a stubborn stain by mixing 1 cup of borax with 2 cups of warm water and apply the paste directly to the stain. Let it sit, then launder as usual. Remove carpet stain by dampening the stain thoroughly and rubbing some borax on it. Vacuum it then finish off with a vinegar and water solution. Let it dry and repeat if necessary. Use this same method on soiled mattresses. It will get rid of both the odor and stain.
6. Remove rust by mixing the above solution with a tablespoon of lemon juice.
7. Removes oxidation from metals with borax. The ingredient is also used as a flux in welding.
8. As a laundry detergent, add one cup of borax to each load and significantly boost your cleaning power.
9. Remove stains from stainless steel or porcelain sinks with this recipe: Make a paste with 1 cup borax and ¼ cup lemon juice. Using a sponge or cloth, rub the stain with the paste. Rinse with warm water.
10. Clean outdoor furniture by washing it with this mildew zapping solution: in a spray bottle, mix 1 teaspoon dish detergent, 1 teaspoon borax and 1 quart warm water.
11. Minimizer odor in your cat's litter box by mixing a few tablespoons of borax in with the litter.
12. Clean your garbage disposal by putting 3 tablespoons of borax down the drain. Let it sit for an hour and flush it with warm water. This will sanitize it, taking care of any smelly bacteria.
13. Remove mildew and mustiness from linens by soaking them in 2 cups of borax mixed with 2 quarts of water. Let the linen sit for a few hours, then rinse them clean.
14. Unclog drains with ½ cup of borax followed by 2 cups of boiling water. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then run your water for a few minutes to flush it out.
15. Remove urine odor from mattress. Wet the mattress rub in borax with damp cloth. Let dry then vacuum up the remaining residue.
16. Deodorize and clean your fridge by washing it with a borax and water solution.
17. Deodorize your garbage pail by filling it with borax and water. Let it soak then rinse it out. Sprinkle some borax on the bottom once clean. This will keep the bugs away and absorb any odor causing moisture.
18. Kill weeds by sprinkling borax where you've seen weeds previously appear. This is useful for weeds that surface in concrete and on walkways, but shouldn't be used in the garden because it will also kill your plants. Sprinkle some borax around the perimenter of the house too and youll be free from ants and other intruding insects.
19. Soften your water when doing laundry by adding borax to the load.
20. Bring life back to your worn china by soaking it in a sink full of warm water and a ½ cup of borax. Rinse well and wash a second time as usual.

Hilton Bowling Club news 3 June 2015

hilton bowling club copyOn Saturday our ladies' team for the Sanders Trophy playing at Umgeni suffered an outright defeat at the hands of Maritzburg. The Lambert Brothers team had a first round bye and met Collegians at Lynwood on Sunday morning. Hilton won this encounter and went across to Maritzburg West to play against Umgeni Waterfall. Only the fours were successful in this match winning by 28 – 8. Our congratulations to Umgeni on winning the Lambert Brothers Trophy.

We are very proud of the fact that we managed to field teams for both these competitions.

Events planned for June include IF Trips on 5th, Artisan's (12th) Chicken Run (13th) and Jaxx Roll on 17th. Please check the notice board for details and keep the relevant organisers informed of your intention to enter these tournaments.

Tip of the Week: Possession of the rink. In essence this law states that you have possession of the rink from when your opponent's bowl stops to when your bowl comes to rest. During this time only you and your skip may be on the rink between the mat and a point 2 metres behind the jack. Please observe this Law.

Five out of five in KZN Inland hockey

umgungundlovu hockey newsFive Laddsworth hockey players participated in the Inter Districts Trials Festival played at St Charles and St Johns where they represented the UMgungundlovu District during May. Laddsworth Primary School is happy to share that they were all selected to represent KZN Inland Hockey.

The girls are Rebecca van der Merwe who was chosen for the KZN Inland U13A team, None Zondi and Kelly Martin were both chosen for the KZN Inland U13C team and Ashleigh Rohrs who was selected to play in the KZN Inland U12B.

Ayaka Mthalane also participated in the Trials Festival and he joins the KZN Inland U12B.

Hilton College Boys Scuba Dive in Sodwana

Before they reached this point in their diving they had to complete 9 quizzes on various topics such as physiology and physics, an exam, two very rigorous pool sessions, and then their sea dives.

Josephine climbs the pony podium again

josephine clewlow ribbonsThis passionate horse rider is relentless in her participation in pony events and for good reason, she loves her ponies who perform excellently under her guidance. Josephine Clewlow, in Grade 5 at Laddsworth Primary School, headed for the podium once again at the Mane Events Dressage Show held at Mount Verde Equestrian Centre on 2 August with her pony Harcourts Highover Maria. Her results were as follows:
Novice 3 – 1st with 67.73%
Novice 4 – 1st with 63.53%
Novice Musical Kur – 2nd with 66.5%

The Story of La Rose Des Vents

With this in mind, he began to build his dream using what he had available. Over the last three years he and his wife Noeline have turned a once abandoned barn into a wonderful venue. The dream took on a life of its own and now they are the proud owner of a venue which lends itself to any number of occasions and can seat up to 120 guests.
 
Andrew Giles, their nephew, has joined the Hilton community and his family at the farm with the aim of developing the newly built entertainment venue into a functioning center for all kinds of celebrations. Sam’s cycling regime earns him first place

sam newsThis year Sam Moore who is in Grade 7 at Laddsworth Primary School set his mind to cycling with focus and commitment. To date he has competed in the 25km Wartburg Illovo Classic, the 10km Cordwalles Mud Man, the 25km Ballito Sugar Rush Classic, the 25km Greytown MTB Classic, the 20km Karkloof Classic and most recently the 20km Sappi Howick Classic where he placed 7th overall and 1st in his age group with a time of 1:11:53 in a field of 132 cyclists.

Liberty Group award big cheque to Laddsworth Primary School

liberty group R15000 newsThe 2014 Grade 4 and 5 pupils at Laddsworth Primary School entered an Art Competition with the theme "What I want to be when I grow up" in October last year. Mr Wayne Pillay, branch manager from Liberty Group Ltd Financial Services presented a cheque for an amount of R15, 000.00 at Assembly. Laddsworth was honoured with this prize for submitting the most entries. Well done to last year's Grade 4 and 5's for their outstanding efforts.

Lucas House: Making a Difference

lucas house making a difference43 Lucas boys took part in the first outreach excursions to the SOS Village (PMB) and Ndabezinhle Creche (Hilton). Mrs Veenstra accompanied half of these boys to the SOS Village, an organisation that looks after children from destitute homes as well as orphaned children. Whilst, Mr Shuttleworth accompanied the other group that went to the Ndabezinhle Creche, a pre-school that provides foundational education to children and orphans. The crèche also provides a meal for the children and, for some of whom, this is the only food they receive in their day.

There was a lot of work to do in weeding and replanting their vegetable garden as well as washing and painting the skirting boards on their roof. Their children were also very excited to play with our boys and the entire afternoon was filled with fun play. The vegetable garden will undoubtedly go a long way in helping them produce their own food and reduce costs. Their modest classroom building also looks far more attractive now that the skirting boards have been freshly painted.

The second outing was a huge success and they were proud to have been able to donate so many clothes, blankets, toys, books and food. Added to this was a hugely generous donation of 300 pairs of TOM shoes (Thanks to Busi Bhembe!) some of which they handed out to the children on Sunday. The children were obviously very thrilled.
