Laddsworth Cross Country Teams Aiming High in 2019

Charli MlotshwaThe Laddsworth Primary School Cross Country Team has continued to excel this year.

Each week the Cross Country team takes up the majority of the top 10 positions in all age groups.

Last week, three Laddsworth pupils broke Records at the Treverton Preparatory School Cross Country Inter-Schools Meeting.

Jodi Moreno (Under 12), 3km, (Old record 14:02mins), new Record 13:13 mins.

Charli Mlotshwa (Under 12) 3km; (Old record 12:13mins), new Record 11:58mins.

Jonathan Werth (Open) 4km (Old record 15:08mins), new Record 14:00mins.

Laddsworth is extremely proud of their Cross Country Team’s achievements this season.

ENTHRALLING LOCAL COURTROOM DRAMA COMES TO THE MIDLANDS

Justice Cast newsFans of legal dramas and local theatre will not want to miss Justice is a Woman; a highly emotive theatre production highlighting issues of gender inequality and the ethical dilemmas of the justice system written by well-respected former KZN judge Chris Nicholson, directed by Paul Spence, formerly of the Royal Shakespeare Company UK and starring a richly talented South African cast.

Set in a KZN university in 2018, after the 2 000-year exclusion of women as lawyers in the courtroom, Justice is a Woman tells the captivating story of a female post-graduate student’s molestation case against her male university professor.

Lead character Portia, the lawyer representing the professor, is faced with an ethical dilemma that forces her to question her values and threatens to tear her personal life apart.

Opening performances take place from 23 to 25 May at Michaelhouse, 29 and 30 May at Grace College, and from 4 to 8 June at the Hexagon Theatre, Pietermaritzburg.

Remembering Rose van Staden with love

rose memorialOn Saturday, 11 May 2019, between 2.00pm and 4.00pm, friends of Rose van Staden are invited to a Celebration of Life and Memorial Service for Rose van Staden. Join friends of Rose at The Barn, Knoll Historic Guest House in Hilton to remember our beautiful Rose who sadly passed away last weekend.

A special tribute from June Johnson, a friend of Rose's who relocated to the UK.

Rose van Staden of Tisra til, Azalea Lane, Hilton passed away on the 3rd of May 2019.

What a beautiful soul she was, to all who knew her. She was so special. I'll never forget her loving heart, her beautiful eyes. We were sister jis...her and I. I called her my sweet gypsy Rose. Her home was filled to the brim with her paintings, books, pottery, smiles, and laughter. The spinning wheel at the fireplace...I can still picture her at it. I loved going there. I'd say your home puts its arms around me Rose. She would always punctuate what she was saying with little poems and songs. I loved that. She used to call me June born in April and used to sing "Little April Lady” to me. That was how she was. Magical....she sang it to me the 2nd last time I saw her when we had a quiet moment in her room. It was as special a time as one could want. Sigh.

When I went to say goodbye, she wished us great happiness in England and said, “Junie, do you think we'll ever laugh together again?” I took her hands in mine and said "of course we will"...as it seemed so important just then.

It was the same with all her friends and family. We all have beautiful stories of her ways. She was so treasured.

Many was the time I would go to her with my woes. She would look at me wisely and with loving eyes twinkling...would say..."Yes Junie but it's finished now.

And so, it is that her life with us all is finished now. And what she has left us with is love. I can see God smiling. That's all he asks of us.

And then a shimmering golden presence lifted her up. Up... and He took her home.

Knight Security Solutions works hand-in-hand with SAPS (Law Enforcement)

“Over the last 6 months Knight Security Solutions (KSS) has been assisting members from the Hilton Police Station with Crime Prevention Operations to combat the increase in House Breakings, Theft out of M/vehicle and Theft of M/Vehicles in the Hilton residential areas. Combined operations have been planned in accordance to the Crime Threat Analysis and Crime Pattern Analysis. These operations have included vehicle patrols, foot patrols in the residential areas as well as observation duties in the plantations and along the railway line that runs through Hilton area. The information on hand is that the criminals are using the plantations and the railway line to gain access to the residential areas to avoid detection.
A good working relationship has been established between the Hilton SAPS and KSS. By combining our resources our operation have become more effective and this working relationship has had a positive effect with regards to us addressing the crime in Hilton. Hilton Vispol would like to thank the Management of KSS as well as their members who work closely and alongside the members from the Hilton Police Station for their assistance. KSS Operations update
Due to the recent high volume of crime, KSS has placed more Response vehicles on the ground. This has meant the Response crews have had to be split, but this will ensure better response times and more area coverage. Management are monitoring this accordingly and will ensure that KSS standards are not compromised.

What can I do to help my child learn for exams?

brain 2Today we are talking about exam revision.
One of the most common problems I hear from parents of primary, high school and even from tertiary students when they phone or email to enquire about our programmes is “He/she has no idea how to learn or study!”
Exam time is coming up again and I find that many mothers dread it as much as their children do.
Why?
Because, they tell me, they have to spend hours, after homework, and during weekends, trying to help their child study his or her „learning subjects‟ such as history, geography, natural sciences etc.
They try to help them by doing it in the way they used to study i.e. reading and trying to memorise the facts from notes or text books which are written or typed in long linear sentences and mostly very boring.
They then make summaries which are just as difficult for them to retain……wonderful parents, supporting their children, but it doesn‟t have to be so difficult for you or your child…… Help them learn joyfully.
RESEARCH TELLS US THAT RIGHT-BRAIN VISUALSPATIAL LEARNERS HAVE LONG-TERM VISUAL MEMORIES AND LEARN THROUGH VISUALIZATION NOT MEMORIZATION
Left or Right? The most important thing you can do to help your child to learn more effectively and more joyfully is to know and understand his/her hemispheric learning style !
Our son has no problem doing his homework and studying for exams. I don’t have to worry about him at all…..
Our daughter is very different. She really struggles to learn and remember all the information they need to know... for exams……. Why is my son a happy independent learner and my daughter not?
After years of helping people to discover and use their dominant thinking style, I can almost guarantee that this person’s son is a left brain dominant learner who learns and retains well through listening (in class) and memorizing facts from a text.
The daughter, who is just as intelligent and gifted, but who struggles to understand and remember historical or geographical facts etc through memorization, is a right-brain dominant learner who thinks and learns through 3D images and visualization. The son is an independent and successful learner in school because traditional teaching techniques are designed for the learning or thinking style of left-brain learners. The daughter will always have to rely on her mother if she continues to try to learn using left-brain skills .
When will this change?
Not until the education departments and the curriculum developers understand and embrace these dual, natural ways of hemispheric thinking, and include right-brain thinking skills. Until then, there will always be a definite mismatch between the right-brain dominant student’s learning style and the teaching and assessment methods in the classroom.
Is there anything I can do for my child?
You CAN'T
* change the school curriculum and the left-brain emphasis in school;
* change the way your visual-spatial child has been wired to think and learn best
BUT you CAN 
* take time to discover and understand your child’s thinking and learning style.
* help him/her to change to holistic, visual right-brain strategies that include visualization, Images, colours, drawings when studying.
This will  take time and effort on your part but will be the best investment of your time as you will be guiding  your child towards becoming a happier and more independent learner.
*show you and your visual spatial child that he/she is not a failure because right-brain thinking  skills are strengths and not weaknesses, or learning disabilities.
*help to make his/her school experience a happier one as s/he gains confidence in his/her  ability to learn.

St Anne’s Matric Student is SA Junior Derby Champion

st annes copySt Anne’s Diocesan College Matric Student, Jessica Woollam, competed at the recent SA Junior Derby show held in Johannesburg from 10 – 12 May and was awarded the title of SA Junior Derby Champion for 2019. 

Together with her horse Bono, they qualified highest and were the last to jump out of the 14 competitors on a challenging course that had 21 jumps in total. They were the only clear round in the competition.

Jessica was also awarded the Victor Ludorum Prize for the 1.30m/1.35m classes as she had 2 second places in the other events.

Grace College Golf Star wins the 2019 KZN Open

Nikhil GopalNikhil Gopal, Head Boy of Grace College, played in the KZN Open on the 3rd to 5th of May at Beachwood Country Club in Durban. The Tournament is a Golf RSA National Open Amateur event.
Nikhil played a solid and consistent game to secure the competitive edge over players from across South Africa, winning by two shots over the second placed competitor, Casey Jarvis from Ekhuruleni. Major Championship winners Gary Player, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, among other South African golf stars, have previously won this prestigious tournament.

Laddsworth Cub receives Leaping Wolf Badge

Nobody can give from an empty bucket, what do you do to care for yourself?
I find strength in God. Fill myself with as much inspiration as I can from Joyce Meyer, Louis Giglio, and Nooma as I'm not always able to attend church due to my career as a speaker I make time to read and learn from the best and the Bible. Then I have an extremely rock-solid support structure and positive dynamic people in my life like my Husband and friends. I only surround myself with positive people. AND LOADS AND LOADS OF COFFEE!!

What daily practice of faith has held you on course?
My Gratitude list. Every day I add 5 things to my list I'm grateful for and pray on it. Prayer and thankfulness are immensely crucial.

What is your go-to Bible verse?
2 Timothy 1:7 For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Who makes up your close support team when the bad days return?
My Husband Lukas van der Heever and daughter. And my soul sisters Sarah Lee Baggot, Catharina De Lange, Charmain Campbell. Without these people, I would be lost.

KZN is one of the biggest human trafficking hotspots in South Africa. I am going to teach you how to keep your child safe and also how to safeguard yourself.

What can ladies in KZN do to end Human Trafficking?
Educate yourself and your children. Be vigilant and implement safety measures to safeguard your children. Human Trafficking can be overcome if parents start to listen to their children. Children run away from their homes because they often feel disconnected from their family and alone. And then Human Traffickers sell them. It all starts and ends with education and positive parenting and the realisation that it can happen to any family at any time. It's time to step up and educate yourself.
Speak out, be the voice, create awareness.
