9pm - Tantu Nada is an acoustic world/fusion duo comprised of Dave Starke (guitar and vocals) and Nish Pillay (tabla and percussion). They create a unique East-meets-West eclectic sound.

Drawing on various genres including Jazz, Latin, Reggae, Rock and Pop and blending them with the rhythms of the Indian subcontinent, they create a stylish musical pairing that manages to feel familiar and yet still fresh and exciting.

 

Dave is an accomplished entertainer with over 20 years’ experience in the music industry. He has performed at The National Arts Festival , The Hilton Arts Festival and White Mountain Music Festival. In 2017, he was a contestant in the first season of The Voice South Africa.

 

Nish studied percussion in both South Africa and India and has performed with many of South Africa’s finest musicians both live and in the studio. He was a contestant on the 2017 season of SA’s got talent and his festival appearances include Splashy Fen, White Mountain Music Festival, The National Arts Festival and The Michaelhouse Festival of Music.

 

Their partnership dates back to 2017 when they first started performing together across KwaZulu-Natal, and since then their repertoire has grown and developed to include music from a wide range of eras and genres.

 

 

The Fishwives were born out of late-night, side-street jam sessions during the National Arts Festival, 2013. Consisting of Celery Burger, Lizzie-Lou Gaisford and Strato Copteros, they have performed on festival stages across the country and been noted for bringing a highly unique flavour to the current South African scene. Songs flow seamlessly from a low tide of alternative folk to a high of progressive rock, with iconic vocal harmony, intricate instrumentation and narrative lyrics all present across this shore. Subject matter is both wickedly dark and wittily light; rabbit-holes of homegrown nostalgia, local superstition, soured suburban bliss and revenge in all its satisfaction. They have recently released their debut album, 'ALGAE', which has thus far been described as echoing an entire 70's record collection without trying to reproduce what was.

 

 

The Freewheelers is a 5-piece band from Zululand with an eclectic sound. Join them on a musical journey that will whisk you to outer space before drawing you back to the heart of the African savannah. Take a trip with them to the heel-tapping, hat-tipping land of folk, before gliding your way through the smoke-filled halls of blues. Crossing the Tugela for the first time as a band, they come armed with a pelaton of instruments, covering big standards, a few edgy mash-ups and even a sample of their home-grown tunes. So, let go of the handlebars and freewheel along the road with this diverse group of musical legends.

St Anne’s Diocesan College pupils received nine of the 27 prizes presented at the Douglas Livingstone Creative Writing Competition Prize Giving held at Westville Girls’ High on 17 September. Girls from Grades 10, 11 and 12 were awarded two 1st place prizes, one 2nd and six highly commended awards.

The PADCA Mile is now in its SEVENTH year and has moved to a new venue, Grace College in Hilton. Now that we are an established event on the Pietermaritzburg seniors calendar, PADCA is looking to over sixties in the Midlands area to come and join in and make it an even bigger event.

Sponsored once again by J Leslie Smith & Company Inc., the morning boasts fun activities and encourages camaraderie. The day promotes ageless living, regardless of physical ability, and every effort is made to ensure everyone is included.

In addition to the 5km, 2.5km and 1km walks around Grace College property, there are Giant Garden Games to enjoy as well as a Tea Garden, with good music and a great vibe.

This PADCA JLS Mile will be held at Grace College on Hilton Avenue, in Hilton, on 18 September 2019. There is NO charge for participation, and all are welcome.

PADCA is a non-profit organisation looking to improve the quality of life of seniors across the whole financial spectrum. They care for vulnerable seniors, in the KZN Midlands, both by homing seniors in their various residences according to their specific needs as well as providing home-based care. They spearhead initiatives (such as #GoBLUE) to educate families and the communities around current issues. While they use income from other sources to cover costs, they are also heavily reliant on DONATIONS to continue with the work they started 70 years ago.

Laddsworth Grade 6 pupils took part in the BNP Paribas RCS Rising Stars Tennis Tournament in Westridge, Durban on Saturday 7 September 2019.

When I was in high school, I found it difficult to learn the work from a page and as a result, I really under performed. Later when I did go to study, a friend showed me how to use colours and pictures to decode the words on the page into a ‘language’ that I could easily understand and remember and then, during an exam, to recode the facts into words for the marker. Suddenly my grades soared.

Later I became a teacher and I taught at one of the top high schools in KZN. I used this method of presenting new content to learners in a different format but still I found that many parents and learners believed that Afrikaans was a difficult subject. However, that notion doesn’t hold true when we compare Afrikaans to a language like French or German.

I had a group of learners that worked especially hard, but just couldn’t excel. Their effort just wouldn’t translate into better grades. This brought me to a place where I was asking myself: What am I doing wrong? How am I perhaps hindering their learning of Afrikaans?

I started researching the different methods of acquiring a language and found that the method we use to teach Afrikaans is outdated. I decided to implement the new methods I learned about in my research and found that using these methods led to an increase in learners’ marks, in some cases, quite dramatically.

During this time when I was teaching at one of the top schools in KZN, I had Wi-Fi, a SMART board and immediate access to support in my classroom. I was in my element!  My in-laws live in the North-West province and we used to spend most holidays on the farm. The workers on the farm have a tight-knit community and we know the children, as they know our children.

When my eldest daughter was about 9 years old, I saw that there was a new girl on the farm of approximately the same age. She looked unkempt: her clothes were too small and certainly not warm enough for the winter we were experiencing. The ladies who work in the kitchen then told me that the girl, Betty, had recently lost both her mother and grandmother and that she is staying with some families on the farm.

However, later I found out that the families she was staying with demanded that she work for her bed and food and she was in charge of looking after the small children while the parents worked. This meant that Betty couldn’t go to school and anyway, I was told, who would buy her school uniform for her.My mother-in-law and I worked together. I gave her some jackets and warm clothes while my mother-in-law bought her a school uniform. The next time we came back to the farm, I heard that the community felt that it was wrong that Betty had received that, and that she needed to reimburse the families she was staying with by giving up her new clothes.

She lost all of it. When we drove home, I said to my husband: If only there was a way for Betty to still receive an education, because I couldn’t see any other way for her to escape this poverty. We wished there was a way of bringing the quality education my own children were receiving to Betty and others like her.

Of course, there wasn’t. I wasn’t willing to go back to the status quo with regards to teaching Afrikaans in an ineffectual way, or of accepting that there was nothing to be done for the Betty’s of the world.UP.Ed was born when we became focused on harnessing the powerful options technology affords us.

This September our local Hilton Pharmacy at The Quarry Centre is celebrating 20 years with Trish le Cordeur at the helm. Congratulations here's to many more successful years!

 

Like you, we love our community. We have a passion for Hilton and its people. Sadly, due to the current state of government and our municipalities, resources are limited to be able to maintain (and improve) the standards we would like Hilton to be at. The reality is that if we as businesses do not step in and help upgrade Hilton, our village as we know and love it, will deteriorate, property prices will plummet and business growth will decline as investor confidence and tourist numbers follow suit.

In February 2017, the HBi, Hilton Business Initiative, was started. With the support of wonderful businesses we have hired two full-time gardening staff and initiated a major clean up and upliftment of Hiltons public gardens, lawns, drains, verges and sidewalks from Grace College to Valley Road in Winterskloof. We hope to shortly extend the project into Old Howick Rd and continue our rejuvenation programme of the municipal gardens.

In July 2019 a decision was made to join forces with the HRA (Hilton Rate Payers Association.) We believe that this merge will help the initiative continue to go from strength to strength.
